Title: Another side project... Vomag with 88
Post by: Rich H on 02 March 2021, 06:54:56 AM
Another project started...  It's been niggling for a while and I got a prompt from a friend to revisit it.  Despite the fact I don't need it...

It will be getting a Rubicon 88 as there is no point drawing it!

My obsession with tyre patterns is almost as bad as my rivet counting.  Each tyre can take we or more hours to get right... :o

It's not finished yet.  Still the cab interior and a check over for details to go.

It's not commercially viable so it'll be available on my wargaming3d.com page once it's done

ah, warhaming3d.com, I've seen your Soviet marines, do you do a discount for all the files in a collection?

I've no soviet marines, that's not me ;) I don't do squidgy things only hard surfaces.
Wargaming3d.com is a multi-vendor site.

Soviet Marines are from Eugene, a guy from Russia IIRC.

Nearly done.  Just need my Rubicon 88 to turn up so I can make the mount fit and finess a few bits.
Then we play the game of "Will it print!"

What I love about this madness...is...knowing a bit about vehicle design, the amount of strength needed in that center section to hold an 88 is astounding.  I know these were actually produce...I wonder how long they lasted!

Apparently they chose the Vomag as they had developed the heavy framed bus which made them a lot more stable than their contemporaries. They were also hugely over engineered and just about had the capacity to carry the gun.   Something like a 20 ton max weight or similar.  They survived fro. Something like 1940nright through to the fall of berlin.  A lot of action around Budapest against ground targets allegedly.

It's printed (except the steering wheel which I forgot...) And the 88 is built So when this ankle biter finally nods off I'll assemble it and get some pics.

Good grief, they actually MADE some of those?  Man, I would love to have seen how well they stood up to the wear and tear of carrying the 88, much less firing it!

They lasted from when they were built until the end of the war so they must have been tough old beasts!
Made in spring 1941 destroyed by the Soviets in 1945 in Budapest.
Though i did read that some were used in Berlin.

Thanks :)
It's going to be the original dark grey and I think it's going to be in transport configuration as it'll be far too big and fragile otherwise

Life colour dark grey plus strong tone wash.  It's under my daylight working lamp there.

It'll get a dry brush and a grime wash too.

I like the dark feel to the result.  It makes them feel more menacing for some reason.

More of my Luftwaffe

Imagine trying to do a 3 point turn in that.

Looks great though.

That is immense!

Great work, clever and a great looking model.  Looking forward to the final paint finish.

Just need to drybrush the crew and I think it's done...  I've done it packed in transport mode but I'm assuming it could probably fire in an emergency.
Might base it as it's a bit of an awkward beast with delicate bits front and rear.

STL is available on wargaming3d.com
