Title: Rules (and miniatures) recommendations for Post-apocalyptic gaming.
Post by: Tanker11 on March 12, 2021, 03:46:22 PM
I am looking for rules (and miniatures) recommendations for Post-apocalyptic gaming.
---I know there have been posts like this before and I am researching the forum...another won't hurt :)

I would like it to be more “hard survival” with zombies instead of “gamma world” mutants. Think Walking Dead, not Mad Max.

I have PulpAlley and I am looking at 7TV-Apocalypse.

I love Pulp Alley but I think I would like bigger games and have weapons/equipment play a bigger role.

7TV-A looks good (I can get past the “TV episode” schtick), but there are no campaign rules and I have to look at how you make your own characters.

Campaign and group development are important.

I need to look at:
Zona Alfa

This is Not a Test

Last Days

Savage Worlds is a RPG, but very crunchy and might work too.

Have tried All Things Zombie, not a fan of the mechanics.

I can recommend This is not a Test.  A good post-appoc feel and a great campaign background and rules.

I’m using a couple of rulesets to game in a setting of my creation. It’s also more hard post apoc rather than gamma world gonzo. To be honest, my post apoc setting is more “teetering on the edge” of an apocalypse like the first Mad Max.

Here’s my log about it: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=129236.0

How detailed do you want your campaign system?

You have not mentioned The Walking Dead: All Out War. It has character generation (Expansion 2) and a campaign system. I think they are in the rules Anthology edition.

I love Zona Alfa, but it is venturing out from (if not civilisation) at least a support base.

Here are a couple of other ones:

No More Room In Hell by Iron Ivan Games.

And Skirmish Outbreak, based on the Skirmish Sangin rules.

If you want some survivor miniatures, the recent Northstar newsletter had these https://www.crusaderminiatures.com/prod.php?prod=1162 (https://www.crusaderminiatures.com/prod.php?prod=1162) at a reduced release price of £24 for 20 figures. Offer ends next week.

Based on this line I do NOT recommend This is Not a Test.  Do not get me wrong, it is a good game BUT it is not a hard survival game.

If you go Last Days you MUST have the Seasons upgrade to make it work.

Not a wargame, but Last Night on Planet Earth is fun and challenging.  I also think Iron Ivan games has a zombie game BUT I do not recall the name.

I Have some details on Last Days and Seasons here:
https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2020/12/review-last-days-seasons-osprey-games.html

Zona Alfa is good for survival horror IF you amp up the danger and make creatures tougher.  As written, the biggest threat is the turn limit before you get all the objectives.  The enemies are more of a friction.  If you up the danger level, it would help get a more "survival horror" feel.

Other than that, I do not have much to add......
