Title: Advice on Russian RPO-A and RPG29
Post by: steve501 on 12 March 2021, 08:07:12 PM
Hi All
Can anyone help I'm trying to find out what level the RPO-A and the RPG29 are issued in the Russian forces (Airborne and Motorised) is it Squad or Platoon
Are they issued in the specialist platoons ?

Any help is appreciated

Cheers
Steve

I suspect, due to the nature of the weapons RPO-A (flame) and RPG-29 (thermobaric and heat), that these are probably held with the organic engineer platoon at battalion level. That’s just an educated guess. The RPO-A was I believe principally used by engineers in Afghanistan, as effectively it was just a replacement for the old back back flamethrowers.

Neither is a standard bit of kit at squad or platoon level and they weren’t for their Soviet predecessors.

Here’s a bit more detail on contemporary MRC organisation.

Yes, as Carlos says, the RPO-A was very much an Engineer weapon, being a direct replacement for manpack flamethrowers (up until the end of the Cold War, anyway - God knows what happened after that).
