Title: Valley of the Wind project (updated May 22nd)

I really love all the Studio Ghibli films. One of my favorites is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. After watching it again recently (for 15th time at least) I decided I'd like to put some small skirmish forces together representing a few factions from the film, mainly those from Talmiki, Pegite, and The Valley of the Wind. I did quite a bit of research on google and came to learn that there was a 2 part manga that the movie is based on. I ordered the manga and started reading. As I don't have any experience sculpting I went with the kit bashing route. once I had enough research I placed an order with both Anvil Industries, Victoria Miniatures, and some Fire Forge blisters of ebay. Once all my orders arrived I got to work assembling the first faction, Talmiki.

I wanted to represent the two main units we see in the film. The heavily armored melee soldiers and the assault soldiers.

This is what I came up with. I dont think they look super close but I think, once painted, they will get the message across.

love your project too! did you 3d sculpt the tank yourself?

Thanks! Yes with the exception of most infantry everything is my own sculpts.

nice work! I'd love to just do an air war game based off of Valley of the Wind and/or Castle in the Sky and/or Howel's Moving Castle lol. Might need your help with the tank from Valley of the Wind. I have found some WW2 Stug STLs that I could probably modify but I have no 3D design experience.

Its a tempting project, but I'm rather full on commissions at the moment I'm afraid. :?

I think you've chosen your parts well. You may not of got exact copies of the original animations. But they definitely ( and instantly) convey what they're intended to be.

Have to agree with YPU not enough .
( Although we're both guilty of putting it on the back burner.)

Definitely keeping an eye out for more progress.

To get the next miniatures to look right I had to try something new, that I had never done. I needed to sculpt some details with green stuff. I ordered some wax sculpting tools for cheap and garbed a pack of army painter green stuff from a box of stuff a friend recently gave me. When the tools arrived I still put it off for 3 more days until I worked up the courage to give it a go.

First thing I did was and a cowl to the miniature I'd use for Kurotowa, who serves along side Princes Kushana in leading the Talmiki forces. I'm not terribly happy with how it came out but it was my first ever attempt. I think it will be more passable with a paint job.

With that "success" I went on to add hair to the miniature I will use for Princess Nausicaä, This was marginally more successful. Then I did the bushy beards and mustaches of the soldiers from The Valley of the Wind and those looked pretty good I think.

Post by: racm32 on May 11, 2021, 02:31:19 AM: I got in a recent order from Brigade Games. The order was a batch of Sci-fi desert soldiers that should work great for my Valley of the Wind Project. Unfortunately the miniatures have been removed from the Brigade Games web store after my order. In an email they said they had a lot of difficulty in getting good casts from the molds due to their age (resulting in delays to my order). I am very happy with the ones I got but still not sure which faction I'll use them for.

Scratch building the tank would be a great project. Its quite boxy (its a fantasy STUG basically) and that helps alot.

Yes I think if I could find a Toon STUG that would be ideal.
