Title: Review of the Elizabethan Ireland Project so far
Post by: Rogerc on 25 March 2021, 03:08:44 PM
Chattign to another wargamer launching into this period I felt inspired to get the figures out and see where the gaps might be and think about next steps, it made sense to get  afew pictures at the same time and load up a new blog post so for anyone interested you can find photos and deails here:

Excellent

Following your blog :D

I have some plans to do something similar at some point, but probably not for a year or two

What rules do you intend to use?

I am currently thinking the Sharp Practice Varient Sahrply Buffed or Pikemans Lament. I am open to other systems though, I am keen to capture the flavour of Irish Warfare.

RogerC, you may want to look at the ruleset "Irregular Wars; Conflict at the World's End".  I don't own them myself but was recommended them earlier this year for "Conquistadore" warfare.  Reading the review they are aimed at non-mainstream 16-17th century, and Ireland is specifically mentioned.

Regards.

Cheers for that SJWi that wa sin the back of my mind and I couldnt remember the name of it, definately oen to try. Keeping the figures individually based for now then I can r-think it dpending on the rules we eventually go with.

Those are some cracking looking figures.

Irregular Wars is well worth a look, it provides a great game. It is aimed at 15mm or so figures, but it is all Base Width driven, so should work with 28mm figures.

Nice figures on your blog.  Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Very nice Roger.

In terms of rules I think a very good game could be had from an adapted set of "Bill Hooks".

For the latest, and I'd say best, scholarship to date James O'Neill The Nine Years War is the book to read.

Good luck with the project.

Very nice project, it's one on my to-do list as well. I'd not come across the Sharply Buffed variant before, very interesting. I just last week got a copy of Sharpe Practice but still to try them out for myself, but from what I've seen of them it could work well.

Thanks for the idead guys, I adnt considered Never mind the Billhooks.

mmcv Sharp Practice is one of my favourites, love how it plays, Sharply Buffed would likely work well but at the same time may feel a bit samey givn the other periods I use it for, lots of food for thought thank you.

Irish to follow at soem point soon.

I may write a Nine Years War version of Bill Hooks for my own entertainment.  If I get round to it I'll post it here when it's done  It's really a war of two halves as far as English arms and equipment go. They start with heavy pike men and lots of muskets.  They finish with lighter pike men and all calivers.

Seconded, Nine Years War by James O'Neill is great.

I had previously followed your blog. It was a great help for my own(never to be finished!) project.

Perhaps a little later than the period you have done but have you looked at or done any Irish Pike or Calivers?

So no Irish Pike, I dont plan to do any rreally, I want the forces to look Irish, I have however got some firearms using both the Wars of the Roses Irish with firearms and a bunch of conversions, I could do with some more.

The Gallowglass will provide the heavy infantry rather than Pike.

Great looking English, I look forward to seeing the gallowglass and kern, I've done my Flodden Highlanders with half a mind of shifting them to Ireland at some future scale creep moment!
Best Iain

They look excellent, especially the command figures. Great work!

I have "Irregular Wars" for when I get to this period but I am intrigued by Sharply Buffed, as I like the look of Sharp Practise and did not know about its spinoff.

I will bear it in mind, perhaps for smaller actions like Deputy's Pass https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Deputy%27s_Pass (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Deputy%27s_Pass)

Look forward to seeing the future forces and their actions.

Really digging this project. It's my personal favorite period, as well, though my focus is in the Low Countries.

To be gratuitously selfish in my response, if you're interested in the smaller size skirmish games (e.g. from 12-36 figures/side) and have an interest in more narrative games and mechanics, I'm currently closed playtesting a set of rules for the era. Will be sending out the next playtest later this month.

Shoot me a PM or email if interested in testing them or being added to the mailing list once they get out in the wild.

Have you looked at Warlord Games' Wars of Religion figures? They're lovely sculpts (Paul Hicks) but on the smaller side so probably won't fit well with the Hoka Hey or Foundry Swashbuckler figures, but might work with TAG figures.

Hi Paul, I think if I had not already bought an painted all the Hoka Hey and Foundry I would have gone for Warlord as it is though I do think they will be too small.

Hi Roger
I notice you mentioned the Warlord Games minis in your post, the Wars of Religion range?
In your opinion do they scale better with the Perry's Irish?
Cheers  :)

I wouldnt have a problem using thme with the Perry and Antideluvian figures even though they are slighter than both, they definately wont fit with Foundry and Hoka Hey though.

Thanks for the feedback Roger, one more question, have you tried fitting the Warlord Games Morion Helmets on any of your minis, just wondering about fit etc.?
Cheers. :)

I have yes, about three of the figures, worked reasonably well, the chap third from the left with the hand axe is one, in another I have  adark age Irishman with short sword and the helmet brings him up to date.
