Title: And the award for "Best Basing" goes to...
Post by: parttimegamer on 28 March 2021, 02:10:04 PM
So, after several months of no gaming, I have managed to paint 2.5 armies for Iron Cross, complete with vehicles, so about 120 figures and 30-something vehicles/AT guns in all. They are 28mm Greeks, early war Germans and the 'half' was finishing off some Brits for North Africa/Crete.

The only thing that I have left to do is to finish off the bases, which is where I am seeking some inspiration from the LAF community. In your opinion, who bases their figures better than anyone else?  (You can nominate yourself if you like  :D)

I would be really grateful if you could post links to photos, blogs etc showing off the best based 28mm WWII miniatures.  (I guess that other periods or scales would be acceptable too.)  Step-by-step instructions or descriptions of the materials used would be helpful too.

I'm not particularly looking for feedback on my own efforts, though am happy to receive constructive criticism, but here are a couple of examples of some Fallschirmjager that I completed last year: https://fortheloveofterrain.blogspot.com/2020/01/painting-remnants-of-my-fallschirmjager.html

I'm looking to raise my game!  Thanks for your help.

I’d be quite happy with what you have done - I like the slightly darker base of the LH model, but like the more varied tufts / bush on the RH one.

Thanks for the positive feedback, Fred.

I was hoping to get inspiration from seeing the work that other people have done by asking the community to "curate" a list of the best modellers/painters.

One of the problems with LAF being so busy, is that threads can rather easily get lost

Here are some starting points to look at painting and basing

Lead Painters League - LAF’s annual painting comp loads of great minis here (and you can then look at previous years too)

Thanks Fred. The basing by Captain Blood is similar to what I have been doing, but better executed! ;-)

Here is a WoR vignette I painted up recently.

Round plywood base, laser cut, 4-1/2" across.
Painted dark brown first.
Then sienna red wood filler applied, wash with burnt umber. Static grass flowers and tufts applied.
