Okay so I have had the exact same question since I sculpted him - I literally finished him, went to take the sculpt out of the oven and turned to my partner and asked "why did i give him a cigar and a gas mask?" lol
My theory is this - the holes in the mask are designed to filter out particulates, but if you hold a cigar up to one you can safely smoke whilst keeping your lungs free of dangerous space dust.
Honestly you're the only one so far to have asked!

It's a new month and i've got a new initiative , The mammoth Mini publishing service.
Basically I want to encourage traditional sculpting, but unfortunately the patreon/digital model that has helped so many digital sculptors control their own work isn't viable for many physical sculptors. So what are their options? sell the sculpt for a flat amount , or work for a big company and make someone else designs. Well now there's mini publishing - In short, we will cast sell and distribute your sculpts, and pay you 65% of all profit from every single sale of your sculpt, and you retain the rights to the design.
Once the cost of production has been recouped or the initial agreed run is sold out, we can either cast it on demand and keep it in our mould library, or you can have the mould back.
The first sculptor we're working with is Banhus miniatures, who has produced the first of a range of minis based on medieval manuscript artwork - this lovely big headed giant chap.

And now for something completely different!
I carved up this ancient ruined monolith from plaster the other day. yestarday i made a sock mould for it and tried out a rotocast pull of it. I was only using generic polyeurethane resin so there is some delamination present, but the detail captured wonderfully, no bubbled and it keeps the weight (and cost) down. I've got some proper roto resin on the way to produce some better casts.

The first cast - you can see some delamination under the surface which is caused by a too thick resin falling away during rotation and creating air pockets between layers. this will be solved by using a less viscous resin.
the white colour near the base is just plaster filler that was stuck to the inside oif the mould after pulling out the master sculpt.

It's quite a chunky piece of scenery, but luckily using roto casting means it stays light and should keep it affordable.

Have you tried making a plug for it out of scrap rubber so you could do a static pour? Probably wind up with more air bubbles but you wouldn't have to roto-cast that way. Always had difficulty getting consistently good results with that technique myself, although yours looks good.

I did consider it, but i think given the good quality I got from the first test I will do a few more without and see how things go - As it stands I want to avoid bubbles as much as possible, So i don't wiggling the mould around in front of the heater for 5 minutes if that means I get a good quality pull from it :) I'd far rather use the rubber to make new moulds for new sculpts :)

Oh absolutely - never waste fresh rubber on a plug. We always used burned-out molds to cut a suitable plug from, but that assumes you have dead molds laying around in the first place.
Nothing wrong with rotocasting if you're comfortable with doing it, which I'm not. Always worried I'd botch my timing and screw up a casting - not helped by the way the phone or the doorbell would always ring the minute I started. Murphy's Law. :)

Spent a couple of hours throwing paint at this - I tried to give it a lovecraftian look, with wet mossy stone and age stained plaster.
not an amazing paintjob by any stretch, but good enough for the table.
(and as much as i'm looking forward to casting these in luminous cthulu green, A paintjob helps show the texture)

Just a small update - The monolith will go live on the webstore tomorrow. I took delivery of a fresh batch of proper rotocasting resin and got an excellent cast today in the proper eye murdering cthulu green that I originally wanted.

I sculpted up this little mutant dude the other day , cast him the next day, and painted him last night/this morning.
I'm really happy with him, He casts well, he's characterful in an oldschool way, and he's pleasingly chunky.
He also got utterly shredded when being removed from the mould so I'll need to make a good master and set it aside for safety sake.

Trying out something new! A BIG miniature, A three headed , 4 mouthed mutant giant. This chap is sculpted in a 50/50 beesputty and fimo mix, and I've gone to town with skin texture to try and push myself. I'm really happy with where he's at - I have finished him since taking these pictures but here he is in half hand mode.

Both parts came out great first time with only a couple of minor issues that I have now fixed - mostly just a bubbly patch in the foot that needed a bigger vent.

I will say that my quite painterly (read - messy) approach to adding texture to minis is perhaps not that suited to a mini so covered in texture - I may cast up a second for myself to experiment with a more basic paintjob.

I sculpted this last night, cast it today and got it on the site for sale this evening.
I wanted a real oldhammer look for my first dragon, But i also wanted him to be a bit of a chunky unit.
I sculpted this one in monster clay - a lovely material ,but one I've never cast before so I'm really pleased that the casts are coming out perfect.

Well I finally did it, I sat down, powered through, and managed to make awhole figure in Zbrush!
As anyone who has been following my 3D scanning thread https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=137316.msg1756806#msg1756806 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=137316.msg1756806#msg1756806) will know, I have been trying to find workarounds to create STL files of some of my designs as I really struggle with digital modeling. But for some reason I sat down this weekend and it all just clicked ,the scales fell from my eyes and I was able to make a whole figure.

Is it perfect? No, far from it - There is SO MUCH that I need to learn and improve on. I need to unlearn my entire approach to sculpting really. But that hurdle of getting a something that looks like an actual figure done is finally gone!

Been making some new stuff - A ghoulish man eating giant, A spikey mutant lad, a stoic dwarf and a giant snake. All of these are hand sculpted with the exception of the spikey brute, which is an early digital sculpt. The giant was a great bit of fun to make, and adding a victim into its hands was a nice challenge. he's about 70mm from base to head.

New stuff!
It's been a quiet week at work so I took some time to do some sculpting. I've wanted to make a large undead lich/king/ancient hero for a while so i quickly sculpted this chap in about 3 hours in-between fielding student questions and regular bouts of "please don't set fire to yourself".

He's about 50mm tall so he'd work as a large enemy for 40mm fantasy games, but I personally think of him as a great and mighty hero from a by gone age, a giant slayer brought back to life by foul magic or perhaps summoned by the pleas of his descendants.
I've also started a range of skeletons to accompany this mighty lad in his various boney quests. And I sculpted this space bastard type character , who makes a going point of showing how big the lich is.

Here's the raw sculpts of my recent fantasy minis - The dinosaur was very nearly a dragon but I decided i wanted a more crystal palace look to him. The witch was mostly an experiment in hair and cloth. The summoned demon was all about trying out elemental textures, and the second skeleton was just because I wanted to sculpt more fancy hats.

I've been slightly too rushed to update this thread but I thought I'd get back on top of it since i've done plenty of new stuff in the last few months. My latest release is one of my biggest - the Wyrm!
This was a sculpt done in monster clay, which gave me alot of freedom to mess with texture and form - I was originally torn on whether to add wings but I'm glad I kept him flightless, he's got a real slithery look to him as a result.

And I've been messing around more with hybrid sculpting and 3d scanning - Anyone that spoke to me at salute this year would have seen this big lad next to me - I sculpted the figure at a nice action man size as a rough sketch, then scanned it and refined the resulting mesh to create my event exclusive mini.

I have a whole range of these guys sculpted up that I haven't photographed yet, but here's the latest of my rust goblins - little armoured bastards.
This is the standard bearer. The first cast was a miscast so i slapped a shield on him and made a champion of him to test the colour scheme I'll use for promo images.

Slightly different -
I'm working on a little game system at the moment, part of which is based on the fantasy writings of William Morris (he of wallpaper and socialism fame) as a result I'm doing lots of little character illustrations in a arts and crafts/early art nouveau style.
I was inspired by mark copplestones little soldiers to try and give a more stylised sculpt a go, so i made this 54mm knight in which i tried to copy my own style of drawing. Initially I engraved patterns into the putty but I found it was visually messy so I buffed it back to the flat. As an experiment it's got some way to go, I think the style needs work before I'd call myself happy with it, but I like the 54mm scale for a sort of period turn of the century fantasy figure, and I think there's potential in it.
I'll probably just keep this one for myself.

I was originally just trying to do a really quick sculpt to put inside the gumball machine I just bought for shows, but I got distracted by using a paintbrush and dissolved putty to make veins and spikes.

Np specific ration, I just take a blob of putty, pop it on a palette, then use a paintbrush to saturate it with lighter fluid. then I agitate it a bit with a small dotting tool and use the resulting slurry to build up dots and lines on the mini. I find lighter fluid works best since it's quite aggressive - although I'd advise caution if you use it to smooth your sculpt since it can turn the putty into an unworkable sludge quite quickly - it'll hold its shape but won't have any resistance to a wayward tool.

After a lovely time selling my wares at britcon, I have knocked up a few more minis. We've got a new rust goblin - this time a dual wielding warlord. these little guys keep proving to be very popular at shows.

I've also made a companion figure to my knight of the red death swordsman - this time a sort of red death cleric. I don't know what the red death is, but I imagine these fellows forming a sort of evil D&D party.

I also knocked up this two headed mutant gunslinger - he's sci fi leaning but I think he'd fit into a game of mordheim well enough.

The mutant gunslinger and the cleric are perhaps the best way to show off my new approach to fine musculature and facial detail -
I've started "Painting" these details onto miniautres in a sort of Pate sur pate method. Basically I use a strong thinner to dilute my beesputty down to a slurry, then I build up fine details like faces, knuckles, veins etc by painting these on in little dabs with a small brush. I've found this far nicer than trying to push and smooth the soft putty.

It really did come out great.
I'll also add that green is actually a good colour for such a sculpt. I can see it painted eith a green hue.

I just added these to the webstore - some ruined statue heads.
These I did digitally - initially as the head of an actual miniature but then figured they'd work better blown up and smashed up into terrain.

Another sculpt! I made this chap out of monster clay (a non drying oil clay) largely as a distraction, partly as a teaching aid to a student. He's about 28mm to the eye sat down, so if he stood up he'd be about 40mm tall. I'm really happy with him as a sculpt, especially the anatomy of the arms and hands.

I've also reduced the price of the cyclork warriors down to £10 for 3 figures. I recently made a new mould for them with integrated bases and as a result they're far easier to cast.

Another giant - This time a ghoul hag to accompany the ghoul giant I did a couple of years ago. I'm really happy with her - cast as a single piece without any issue. The demo one was painted just using washes and inks over unprimed white resin, and I think looks the part.

I think of my giants as fallen creatures, degenerate descendants of a once noble race. Ghoul giants are pallid, hairless, cave dwelling flesh eaters - like lanky Morlocks.
Certainly more Howard than Tolkien.
