Title: GW LotR Black Numenorean figure proxies?
Post by: robh on 14 April 2021, 05:26:22 PM
What options have SBG or WotR players found for alternate figures for Black Numenoreans?
The GW ones are bloody ugly and damn expensive.

I have found some nice looking repaints of the plastic Dunharrow figures but on the search for other options that will work with the Peter Jackson/GW figures.

I think you might find them here :-)

I use slightly differently painted and slightly converted warriors of the dead, they have ancient looking armour and raggedy robes. I just went for some more industrial looking shields and helms in some cases.

I bought these to use as Black Numenoreans - good figures in terms of sculpt and casting but they are small. No bigger than one of the shorter GW Mordor orcs.

I think it depends a lot on what image you want.

Do you want the Peter Jackson/Weta/GW undead in Gothic plate look or something else?

Right now I am using conversions of the plastic Army of the Dead figures but have my eyes open for something else. I was thinking maybe Fireforge Templars. With their tabards and hooded cloaks I thought they might look distinctive enough. Then switch my converted minis over to be Dead Marsh Spectres.

The unreleased miniatures ones do look good, but other comments I found about them also note how small they are which is a shame. Also though nicer than the GW ones they are amazingly more expensive.

I think the best conversions I have seen are these:

From the Michael Hanns blog, They use bits from the Morgul Knights (which I do like) on the Dunharrow bodies.

I want to keep the Jackson/GW style rather than a more accurate look because I already have so many of the rest of the range.  My thought at the moment is to do something with the plastic Easterlings.

Those do look great. It is too bad that it is difficult to get Morgul Knight heads. Interesting idea on using Easterlings.

I tried a few ideas out in the past and decided against them, including GW Dark Elves.

But I had not considered Easterlings. Are you thinking a different head style?

Sort of, keep the facemask but replace the helmet horns with something more crown-like from plastic card (or possibly the top of the 2nd age Numenorean winged helmet) and make up some long cloaks from craft paper, then it is just a dark paint scheme.  I would only want a couple of companies for WotR so not too big a project.
Although I am lazy enough to prefer a workable "use these instead" option.

Yeah, that sounds like it has potential. I was thinking of using historical Persians for Easterlings and the GW Easterlings as Black Dragons but yeah I can see using them as Black Numenoreans with some tweaks. Thanks for the food for thought.
