OK Peeps, two questions:
1. Favourite rules for air warfare in WWI?
2. Can anyone remember (and you'd need to be gaming in the mid-late 1970s to recall this one), a set of rules for 1/72nd aircraft that involved clipping the models with close pegs and garden wire to a wooden pole and stand? And if you could do, what were they. I think they were from lamming, but they may have been an early Paragon set.
thanks
Steve

My gang likes Blue Max.

Triplane by McEwan Miniatures was the 70s one for 1/72 planes clipped on dowels on wheeled bases. Mustangs and Messerchmitts was the WW2 version.
Hostile Aircraft does it with 1/285 models on much shorter flight stands with hexagonal bases for the tabletop. Rules and minis available through MSD Games:

Canvas Eagles is great fun and can be played in pretty much any scale; there's folks who use 1/72 planes on stands from car aerials, and the Wings of War planes (which are 1/144 or 1/200 or something like that) are used too.

I do very much like the Axis and Allies Angels 20 rules.
However, these are for WW2 and although I could adapt the stats for WW1 I have been waiting for someone cleverer and less lazy than me to do so.
Anyone done this or fancy a stab at it? I think it would be great for a fun WW1 game.
Here's a short video about movement (there are others on this guys youtube list too)

The rules are freely downloadable from the author's site and I would highly recommend a try at the system.

It's a great shame this game is OOP but there were two releases at the time.

Hi Steve - like you I think the rules you recall were by Paragon.
-
I played a Paragon set once in the early 80s. The club set-up was using 1/300 Davco planes on fixed stands.
-
Personally I like Wings of War. Game play is fairly easy in the basic rules, and can be made more complex with the addition of AA guns, bombers and bombing, Drachens, Altitude, incendiary rounds, ace rules, and the like.
The WW2 rules are, for my money, not as clean. I also prefer the sort of continual chess of the WW1 vs the single pass annihilation from 20mm cannons in WW2.
The planes are done reasonably well, and the cards do an okay job showcasing the difference in plane capabilities.

I just got my Kickstarter box for 'Age of Dogfights -WW1 today from Serbia! This looks great and should cover the board game/mini side of things nicely. It was a kickstarter but is in retail now from the makers : https://www.gamesforsage.com/games
Here is a review: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2637512/review-base-game-and-expansions
Looking forward to getting this in the table.

Hands down for me is wings of war simple and clean rules for the period. Also the plane models while a bit expensive are fantastic.

Many moons ago, when I was gaming WWI tabletop airplane games, my club used a set of miniature rules called Red Baron by Bill Kopp (1992). Really liked the rules, as the author attended the major conventions I went to over the years, running many games. The rules just seemed to die out, mainly due to the author not running games, I suppose.
You can find a copy out there for about $16 or so.
-
My preference is Canvas Eagles for 1/72, I also have my own simple set loosely based on movement card templates for each aircraft, like Wings of Glory, but heights and ammo and action cards.
Cheers
Matt

Canvas Eagles ! Bit oldschool but lots of fun!

We use a one page (two sides) homebrew set.
Played recently, for the first time in ages.

I just into Wings of War. It is a good system. I really like the planes and they come painted!

I like Spandau and Lewis by Kaptain Kobold. You can find them for free at the Stronghold Rebuilt.

Unlike most aerial wargames, they do not use secret maneuver selection, which makes them ideal for solo gaming.
