Post by: majorsmith on 08 May 2021, 08:54:38 AM
Finally getting around to this USMC commission, just a WIP at the moment, got another 9 to do, haven’t painted anything for years in a combat uniform! So many shades of green! The Mitchell camo was easier than I thought it would be

A few more wips, will be basing all at the end, not sure whether to base for Hue or jungle? On another note, how much equipment does the radio operator carry?!? Smoke grenades galore!

It was not unusual for the RTO to have the LTs or the old man's smoke grenades hangin' on the canvas strap that held the radio to its frame.  We did it in ROTC and the National Guard in the early 80s...

Nice brushwork, by the way... :)

Which it totally logical is the LT's is asking for support, artillery, air, helo, etc then grabs a smoke marker to mark the position. Original pictures show them carrying lots.

Nice painting job.  ;)

Yep.  He also had an antennae/spare parts bag strapped to the side of the radio, and usually had at least one spare battery too.  And that's in addition to his usual gear.  The RTO carried almost as much weight as the M60 gunner...

Well all the basics done, they need some details to the bases before basing properly and a few coats of varnish!

They definitly look the part, great job. What are your plans for the bases?

I’m not sure ash, maybe Hue? As some of the guys have ARVN type weapons, I think a Mat and Thompson, I’ve looked at your thread and I like the sparse look of the bases with bits of rubble etc

All done! Got to say after initial challenges, ie knowing nothing about the USMC uniforms of the Vietnam war, these were brilliant to paint!!! Loved em! Just hoping empress do some early war ww2 French or germans at some point ....

Very nice work! :)

I like the uniform and web gear color choices - close to what I'll use in my Vietnam stuff.  I especially like the helmet covers - they look the part (we had them in my National Guard unit in the early 80s).
