Title: Ockius’s 90s Orcs and Goblins
Post by: Ockius on 08 May 2021, 06:16:03 PM
Thought I’d post a few of these recent figures.
The first lot are Mountain Orcs sold by Alternative Armies and sculpted by Kev Adams. They stick out a bit among the AA stock as their other fantasy greenskins are in a very different style.

First orcs (in fact, fantasy full-stop) I have painted in about 16 years!

Kev also did the Lesser Goblins in the AA range too.

Would have been great to have seen more orcs in this range.Nice work on them.Still not painted mine since i bought them on release.

Well, such excellent figures to come back to fantasy painting. They do seem to be quite big dudes, ain't they?

Good to see some of the non-GW Greenskins for a change.

A trio of Black Tree Design goblins.
Should really rename the thread ‘90s style’ as I think these are quite recent but fit well with the GW early 90s goblin range that I have lots of.

And a brace of wolf riders, also Black Tree Design.

Savage orc boarboys. Some Citadel, some Black Tree Design/Harlequin.

The slowly growing unit of goblins, all Harlequin/BTD.

And two Orcs by the same make. Big fan of their orcs! Similar to the Citadel 90s ones but meaner-looking and a bit rangier and more sinewy.

Excellent looking greenskins!

A fellow I game with regularly has a number of the ex-Harlequin figures in his collection and from seeing those in-person, I have to agree that they’re gritty, vicious looking (yet oddly cheerful) 1990s orcs and goblins.

I’m looking forward to seeing your next additions to the horde!

90s O&G is the best kind! These are all lovely looking. Pattus Magnus put it really well there: "I have to agree that they’re gritty, vicious looking (yet oddly cheerful)...". Spot on!

The black tree figures look great an much better in my opinion than the current oversized range.

Thanks for the comments all  :D

I’ll probably post a few more in a few weeks/months, as I’ve been stripping my awful teenage paint jobs off a few models here and there. Nasty job!

These aren’t 90s at all, as far as I know, but there are broadly in the style of  GWs orcs of the time. These are Warmonger Miniatures’ mercenary orcs. Landsknechts and orcs combined - two of my favourites rolled into one  :D

I’ll eventually get lots of these but they are pricey.

Sorry the bases aren’t done yet.

Those models are gorgeous, until you see the price tag and there goes your dream of making a full army out of them..

What's the recipe for that yellow and the orcs skin? I'd love to try it myself.

Yes, not cheap! I had £100 worth in my basket for the Xmas sale but backed out and have decided to buy them in smaller tranches.

The orc skin is:
- black undercoat
- Waagh flesh base coat (Citadel)
- Warboss green over most of it, leaving the odd bit of shade
- a wash of Coat D’Armes Green Ink (supposed to be close to the old Citadel Orc Flesh Wash)
- Warboss green over that to smooth it out and pick out non-shade areas
- Warboss Green mixed with Skarsnik green to highlight a bit
- Skarsnik green on its own to highlight
- final highlight was I think Kislev Flesh mixed with Yriel Yellow to create a soft yellowish colour.

I never usually would do so many stages but tried to take these guys up a level!

There are two yellows here, the lighter one is a cream colour base, then Yriel Yellow, then contrast Iyanden yellow washed over, then Yriel again. Finally highlighted with Yriel mixed with a little white.

This one with a sort of Cossack hat on.

Another Warmonger mercenary orc. This guy is a big personality! The fact he is wearing a pearl necklace seems eccentrically at odds with his appearance.

Here are some goblins.

A trio of archers from Ral Parth Europe, by Heartbreaker Miniatures and sculpted by Kev Adams. Highly recommended and go perfectly with the Citadel range by the same guy.

Thanks Pattus Magnus!

Here’s another interesting one from Alternative Armies. These are rangy fellows, with ‘witchy’ noses and chins. I like the movement in this sculpt, and the fact he is quite 3D in that he isn’t sculpted across a single plane with his body square on and weapon above his head like so many others tend to be.

A couple of the Warmonger Miniatures mercenary orcs.

I’m working towards a unit of 15 of these, with a focus on the polearm wielding guys for a landsknecht pike block style effect.

Who designed the warmonger orcs?

I don't know but they are some of my favourite orcs! I like the individuality of each figure and the fact they are named. I hope they look okay ranked up as a unit as they are a tight fit on 25mm bases and there isn't much uniformity of pose.

Alternative Armies goblin wolf riders.

I like these guys and think the wolves are good models - my favourite of the ones available at present, although they are a bit small compared to the Citadel plastics that make up the bulk of my wolf models.

Nice wolf on the wolf riders! I recently painted a copy of the wolf rider with the spear. It’s a cool figure and wearing a dead crow on his helmet makes a statement.

Pattus Magnus: yes, the crow is cool - I didn’t initially realise what it was and when I did I thought it was good to see something a bit different!

Same here, I assumed the helmet had a crest, which would have been okay too. The dead bird fits with the battle standard some of the goblin infantry from the same line carry, though. It seems like the goblins have a hate for crows (maybe because dwarves train crows as messengers or spies…)

Here are some guys that capture early 90s Warhammer for me: cartoony, silly, not particularly grim or dark, and full of vibrant colour and what is probably quite British humour.

Very nice! I love those old models.

As you like 80's/90's orcs and goblins you might like (if you haven't seen them already) the Longsnout Orcs which you can either get as stl's from the sculptor (https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Pebetron (https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Pebetron)) or find them on Etsy or some other 3D printing services- they have a very nice throwback style and humor while being a bit more modern in detail etc.  I bought a unit of 10 and had a lot of fun putting them together and painting them (and I reviewed them on YouTube in case you want to journey down that rabbit hole: https://www.youtube.com/@Frugalmax (https://www.youtube.com/@Frugalmax) ).

Keep posting!
