I'll post some images here of minis for the huge Ipsus game I'm working on, which will run in September at the London GT. For the next few weeks I shall be mostly finishing the elephants.

Now that's an elephant herd! :o
-
Oooh ohh baby, talking my language :)
Might need some 'terrain features' for that many.
-
Looks amazing Simon, are they all Aventine ellies?
-
They are amazing. Ipsus reputed to have 475 elephants. 400 on the allied side against 75 Antigonid. The elephants had a decisive impact- but as a gambit. A one- off trick that gamers wont fall for. How to simulate it? I bet Simon has thought long and hard.
Too bad there are no details of the elephant combat at Ipsus, and hardly any details at all for one of history's decisive turning point battles. It is for all intents and purposes as big a drama as Waterloo, but hardly known, hardly mentioned.
I'm sure Simon's game will resurrect it from the dust in his massive display!

Hi Jeff,
The 14 "Macedonian" elephants will form a screen across the front of the phalanxes, using the TtS! elephant screen rule. It's these I'd like some more of; 14 seems a lot but as it stands there will only be one roughly every 18 inches across the 20' frontage of the phalanx. I'll call Keith later, I think I need another half-dozen.
The other 15 will be in formed units on either flank of the allied phalanx- I'll treat them as raw, and remove their shock markers so it's unprofitable for them to charge.
BTW Jeff has written a really super background for the scenario, I'll have a look at how we might publish that before the event. Later, after I've run the game, I'll plug in some photos and the OOB and publish it as a free download.
Cheers, Simon

Super excited to see the progress of this!
And the mention of Hydaspes has got me even more excited 8)
-
I have all the minis for the Hydaspes but most of the Indians (and there are a lot of them!) are unpainted. Where possible I'm going to use some of the same minis for both- the new phalanx I'll be showing in some months will be used for Hydaspes too, also the companion cavalry and some other minis.

Sounds groovy baby! I agree splitting the role of the 'screen' vs. offensive elephants used as bludgeons is an appropriate way to go. Curiously in the Diadochi battles they more important as anti cavalry screens and deployment covering screens, and when used aggressively became double edged swords as at Gaza.
Anything I have scribbled will be incredibly enhanced by photos of a "To The Strongest" massive attack! Glad to be a small part of this opus. When are they inventing that teleporting phone booth device?

My name is Simon, The BigRedBat
Look on my Elephants ye Mighty, and despair!
Amazing project
-
They look fantastic. :-*
I have long admired your ambition to recreate huge ancient battles.
-
An impressive herd of pachyderms! A fair bit of stabling required for all those models.
-
Im always amazed at the logistics involved in storage and transportation of such a huge collection

It's pretty daunting at times, George. Storage is a killer, I recently ran out of space and have literally had to dig my way out of a hole.
-
Wonderful pachyderms. :-* :-*
-
I saw that on your blog Simon- I assume that there will be traps, treasures and perhaps a part of 4 lost adventurers.
Will there be a dragon
-
This is going to be mighty impressive, look forward to seeing more :)

Sorry for being slightly off topic here but would love to see a size comparison between different indian miniatures if you ever get the chance!
-
Hi will take photos at some stage. For Indian miniatures I can summarise:
Vendel - biggish 28mm
The Miniature Company - biggish 28mm
1st Corps - smaller 28mm.
The first two ranges are very compatible, and luckily I have most of the minis I need form them as they are hard to source. Vendel can be got from Thistle and Rose in the US, TMC aren't being made at the moment. 1st Corps is probably the sensible way to go if in the UK. For elephants, I love the Aventines.
-
To add to the above:
Old Glory has a complete range of smallish 28mm Indians. They are a mixed bag but paint up nice in units.
Newline Designs include both large and medium 28’s the newer six pack sets are larger. I think their Indians are quite nice but the poses are less dynamic than newer figures.
1st Corps are smaller but their chariots are very nice.

Ah thanks Jeff- I don't have any OG or Newline.

I'll second this about the Old Glory Indian elephants. My Warlord armored elephants look like mastodons next to them lol

Essex Miniatures also have a decent range. Somewhere between 1st Corps and TMC/Vendel in size. Their elephants are very nice (I think there are a few lurking in Simon's massive herd...)

1st Corps on the left, the other two are Essex.

The Warlord ones are out of scale IMO. The Old Glory are small compared to Aventine- but Aventine are not out of the solar system.
-
Yes I have a couple of Essex veteran elephants in the Indian Indian herd. They are quite acceptable but I have come to prefer the portability of resin. I've just ordered some printed elephants that may be lighter, still.

That somehow doesn't shock me in the slightest lol

Very impressive. Both Quality and Quantity. :o

Now back to Ipsus :D

There will be a lull before I finish anything else for the project, but here are some chariots for Seleucus that I finished basing back in February. Mix of Vendel and Gripping Beast Polemarchs, mostly painted by chum Shaun McTague.

Stunning!
I’m thinking of getting the GB ones as captured versions for my nutty Galatian army.
Just stick a Celt driver in there.
-
Awesome Simon...I saw you mentioned OOBs, I would love that as I could copy it for 15mm as I did with your Raphia project....it only run to nearly 3000 Xyston figures and lots of elephants! This looks like I would nee to up my game on scythed chariots!
-
Hi Frostie, the OOB wont' be finished until September as I intend to use as many minis as I can get painted and based in the available time. I keep adding extra bits. :-)
-
Hi Simon,
No rush like all of us I have a lead mountain that would collapse a ceiling lol
But I am following this thread with excitement
-
Those chariots look bloody awesome!
-
Thanks- I should have some more pics of the elephants, soon, which are close to completion. And I've ordered a bunch more from various manufacturers.

Pachyderm update- I decided to add another four to the elephant screen, they've just come back from my painter-mate Shaun McT and will shortly be added to the herd. There's more about them here: Elephant Screen (https://bigredbat.blogspot.com/2021/08/ipsus-elephant-screen.html)
-
Fabulous stuff. Giving new meaning to the phrase ‘movement tray.’ lol
-
That is an incredible display of elephantine power!
Should be an amazing game on display.
-
Fantastic as always!
Great inspiration for my own elephants too!
-
Stunning number of pachyderms! If I were facing them, I’d be secreting a mouse about my person!
