Title: Books in English on Magnus the Good and the destruction of Jomsborg
Post by: Atheling on 29 June 2021, 02:10:02 PM
Hi,

A bit of a long shot but maybe not due to the cosmepolitan make up of LAF.

Doe anyone have any book/articles recommendations in English on Magnus Olavsson/Magnus the Good and the destruction of Jomsborg?

Thanks :)

There's Alison Finlay's new translation of Jómsvikinga saga which may have information that is of interest (https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110627169/html).

You could also try the Viking Society web publications site (http://vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/). They have an older translation freely available (http://vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/Saga%20of%20the%20Jomsvikings.pdf). There might be other stuff of interest on there, especially in Saga Book, but you'll have to check each volume individually.

There's also an article in the Retrospective Methods Network newsletter 14 by Sirpa Aalto that talks about recent research into the Jómsvikings. Might be something in there (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/networks/retrospective-methods-network/rmn-newsletter-14).

I'll report back. It's a time issue so it may take a while. I thinking of contacting Darren at GB, who used to have some contact with the Jomsvikings reenactment group and ask for some pointers in narrowing down the field. And the Jomsvikings itself of course. I don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place!  o_o
