Title: Wargaming Seven Year's War in India
Post by: 10thMountain on 07 July 2021, 12:32:33 PM
Hello,
I am looking for a rule set regarding the Seven Years War in India. I know there is a book however, I forgot the title and author.

It’s not a rule set but contains a lot of information -  Minature Wargames publication no1 -  “The campaigns in India during the Seven Years War 1756-1764”

A guide for wargames by Mike Kirby

I obtained my copy from Caliver books

Hope this is of use - if not simply delete😀

QRF Models still seem to sell a guide to warfare in India from the Great Mughals to the Mutiny by Howard Whitehouse, which say they include a set of rules. Price GBP £5.99. I don't know if these are what you are thinking of? Probably a bit dated as I guess they were released back in the 1980s along with all the other guides originally sold by Freikorps. However , some of them are still "classics".

It's not great to be honest...  :(

Much more useful was the series of articles in the early Miniature Wargames magazines by Paul Stevenson. Are there DVDs of back issues still available?

FWIW we use Piquet's Cartouche rules with a few minor tweaks and they give a cracking game for the period.

How strange is that. I was looking at my copy just last night. It's a great little publication, dare I say pamphlet (40 pages).

A blog follower (I think) sent me my copy after I mentioned an interest in it, oh sometime way back when. Not pursued, at least not yet!

Blog followers are such a generous bunch.

At the back it has a rules bibliography. The only period specific set mentioned is:
"Wellington in India" CSG Publications, 1995. By Grant and Asquith. (I'm a mate of CSG, so I can check if he has any stock available (if generally OOP). I doubt it but, if it's that get back to me).

The old WRG 1685-1845 set works very well for SYW in India. I remember many great games. Bit old school though. Otherwise I guess just adapt your favourite SYW set by adding rules for armoured cavalry, elephants with guns, camels with rockets, guys with big choppers, spearman, etc

Warfare in the Age of Reason by Tod Kershner gives a very good game for SYW in India. I have played ina couple and really enjoyed them.

Any SYW's ruleset that you like ,but then make India adjustments.I also made  a deck of random event cards that get pulled,o ne card a turn ,some being blank, adds to the game. Adjustements I mADE ,for example .1. Native artillery can only fire every other turn ,and once placed ,can;t move.Any Indian native troops can always charge w/out die rolls ,as long as they have not been fired upon.French D'Busseys good are one notch better than the French regulars or Compagnie des Indes troops. If any Britsh or Company regulars retreat ,troops opposite them will immmediately charge forward.British regulars have one notch better morale than French regulars ,but equal to D'busseys troops. The Kirby Magazine is a must very helpful. It took me many moons to make my constantly changing rules,(I use bungers tricorne),lots of reading, from what little there is.Irun a game at the SYW con every year ,except this year.

Terrific looking games Juergen!

The only amendments we added to Piquet were to make the European infantry a bit more durable than the equivalent Indians and adding in rocket artillery. Rockets are largely ineffective apart from a deleterious effect on morale but we included a danger to all units friend or foe within arc, which makes them wonderfully erratic!

Age of Eagles has a free supplement called Age of Tigers: https://ageofeagles.com/downloads.

It may be worth a read through.

The Virtual Armchair General offers “John Company”, but that seems more focused on the Indian Mutiny era.

What an inspiration Jurgens!  II am very impressed.  I also use Piquet as well for my Indian Games.  Who is that priest you have out in front?  The miniature is fantastic!  I know its illegal, but I use Armored Elephants as well (What's India without Elephants), they are more erratic than rockets.

Nothing is illegal in India,I believe the Priest is from Conquest miniatures.Everything goes in India. Picture is of French ,their Sepoys and in the pinkish/tan D'Busseys Portuguese/halfbreed company.
