Title: Tim’s ongoing Oathmark outpouring.
Post by: 2010sunburst on 16 July 2021, 04:55:52 PM
Hi all
My first new topic here, so be gentle…..
I have just finished painting and basing some Oathmark Goblin wolves.  The riders will be along later, but I thought you might want to see them!
Hope they pass muster…..

Many thanks GG.  Really glad you like them.   Compared to some on here I’m just a journeyman though……

Very nice indeed! A great variety of natural-looking and convincing colour schemes too. Can't wait to see the riders!

Those definitely pass muster, excellent painting and a great set of natural looking colour patterns!

Thanks Hobgoblin and Pattus.  Really glad you like them.  As to the colour schemes, well I’m no artist, more of an artisan.  I therefore collected twenty or so pictures of wolves off the internet and had them upon my PC when I painted.  After all, we would use references for historicals, so it’s logical to do that with animals.  I use the same techniques for horses and any other wild animals I need to paint.  It also works for fur cloaks and saddle skins etc..

Those Oathmark wolves have had a bit of stick on this forum but yours look great! The effort you put in researching colours has paid off, they look natural but with enough pop to stand out on the tabletop!

Excellent natural range of colours and as others have said you’ve made what I’d written off as ugly, clunky models quite beautiful. The pure white wolf is spot on too (I have a large all white Swiss Shephard x husky) they really are that bright (when clean). Thank you for posting.

Lovely painting I’m not keen on the sculpts themselves but the paint work is fantastic
Title: Re: Tim’s ongoing Oathmark outpouring.
Post by: 2010sunburst on 17 July 2021, 09:10:26 AM
Wow…thanks all.  I’m bowled over by these positive comments.  As to the sculpts, I can see why they’ve got a bit of stick, but the head end is excellent in my opinion.  They do look a little lionish from some angles, and some of the musculature looks like body fat rather than muscle, but over all they look like large wolves, which is kind of the point isn’t it……

I really like those wolves and you've done a fantastic job getting them painted up! I really like how they are reminiscent of the old Battle Masters wolves... like they took the best of the battlemasters wolves and made them better.

Excellent paint work, inspiring stuff.

Title: Re: Tim’s ongoing Oathmark outpouring.
Post by: 2010sunburst on 19 July 2021, 08:17:15 PM
Hi Thingol
Thanks so much for the kind comments.  The basing materials are actually pretty simple.  The ground cover is papier mache powder made up with white glue (so it sticks) and tinted with powder paint.  The flock is three colours from Javis, meadow green, dark green, and spring green.  The rocks are sold in gardening shops for basing pond plants, and the tufts are varied from warpainter.

Hi BZ.  Thanks mate, appreciate the support.  I am retired, and paint virtually every day, so I thought they would take about two weeks, not four….it felt like I was doing three units at times…

Title: Re: Tim’s ongoing Oathmark outpouring.
Post by: 2010sunburst on 07 January 2022, 01:13:43 PM
Cheers Melnibonean.  Very kind compliments.  Basing is actually really simple.  The compound is sculptamold from hobby craft, tinted with powder paint.  Stones are added into the ground before it dries,  using pond gravel.  This lets them sit in the landscape rather than on it.  They are then flocked with dark, medium, and light flock in turn to give them depth, then tufts are added.

Long time since I posted on this, or on anything else to be honest.  I’ve had a few health issues that put a crimp in my painting style, most bad episodes of RA, which were followed by a DVT issue and a serious bridge embolism.  On the mend now though, so here are my newest recruits…..
They are the Oathmark Goblin personality sets.

Cheers Hob, very humbling comments.  Recovery is going well, thanks.  The pelt is copied from a picture I found on the net.  It is a striped hyena……it’s the only way I can do skins and furs.  I copy originals because they don’t always grow as you would imagine.

My only observation is the that poor elf fella on the far left of the picture appears to have some sort of severe-looking medical issue with his neck! The "joys" of posing separate heads on plastic models I suppose. lol

They look great, and very nicely painted and based as all the minis in your thread here are.  :)

LOL…..hadn’t noticed that.  It’s possibly the effect of wind on the ice cream cone hairstyle they seem to favour….l

Hi all
Long time since I posted on this……but I fancied some cavalry, so here are the Gripping beast Arab light cavalry done up as a generic fantasy cavalry unit.
Enjoy…..

Really great, your varied colour choices work brilliantly at suggesting the individuality/non-uniform of the chaps whilst tying them together nicely. Bravo sir!

Cheers Balm.  Glad you like them.  I thought they were a bit dolly mixture when I painted them, but they work better as a unit than I thought.

The goblins are good fun to paint.  I don’t like Kermit green skin on them, so went with a blue grey face tone followed by highlights, then Vallejo face wash to define the shadows.  Gives a cool skin with a warm undertone to show life.

The colour tones on the horses are amazing! Great job!
Cheers TGA.  Really glad you like them.  The horses were relatively easy, if a little time consuming.  All I did was found photos of horses I liked the look of on the internet and copied them  ;).   There are plenty of resources out there, I even learned the difference between Bays and Chestnuts….I always thought they were just coat colours, turned out I was wrong.

PS, It’s how I always do animals, I never make them up  :)

Been a bit remiss keeping this project up to date.  Here are the results of the last six months….not much…some Orcy archers and some human cavalry.  The orcs are obviously from the Oathmark range, and the human cavalry are basically Victrix Normans with a fanciful paint job.  Anyway, hope you like ‘em.

Title: Re: Tim’s ongoing Oathmark outpouring.
Post by: Ultravanillasmurf on 07 December 2024, 05:57:54 PM
Nice.

I did not recognise the orcs as orcs at first, interesting the flesh tone changing their appearance.

I like the not Norman's.

Yeah, those look excellent! I’m a proponent of non-green orcs myself, so I like the direction you’ve gone with these. The riders look good too. They remind me of the sort of lord of the rings illustrations that pre-dated the movies (and that’s a good thing).
Title: Re: Tim’s ongoing Oathmark outpouring.
Post by: 2010sunburst on 08 December 2024, 09:40:43 AM
Cheers Smurf, I personally dislike green orcs, and don’t see them as black either.  Tolkien described them as corrupted Elves, so I went with fair skin with lesions…..

Thanks Pattus, sort of the effect I was going for so it’s nice to have that approach validated 👍

I responded once to a question on another board that was seven years old. The person who asked the question was still around and grateful for the answer. Others lose interest seven days later.
