I have wanted to diversify my Eastern agriculture fields for a while now and at the same time build something that wouldn't be out of place in China, the Philippines, or the Dutch East Indies. I decided to go against the common grain of wet rice fields and go with the typically more upland dry rice agriculture. Terracing is an agriculture intensification method found in all three regions and I think gives some added interest to a terrain piece. Per usual, I based the piece on a plastic backed cork coaster and built up the terrain using cork tile.
Here is some initial work.

Here the piece is with the "masonry" finished. The "stone stacking" took a lot longer than I thought that it might. Heck, making the stones took longer than I thought lol . The bright white that you can see is textured plastic sheeting that will be painted to be a stone pathway.

Next up will be to spackle and texture the hill side, cut and install the growing crop, the excedingly tedious thin spackling of the interior of the terraces around the crops, and then painting.
Looking back I would have increased the verticality between terraces. I am considering building a pole structure watch tower for the right side of the field but I will be a separate piece for ease of storage and transport.
I think that this field has potential to be a nasty surprise for passing patrols of a varierty of nationalities, having both hard cover and over view,

Nice work! If only ADLG did not require all fields to be rectangular, lol!
-
Great start! Really looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Looks good Lon 8)

Great idea. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

That really is a great idea. Looking forward to the finished piece and how it fits in with your other terrain.

Brilliant!

Excited to see how this one turns out! :)

Real life, as usual, has interfered with the more important work of my Far Eastern and Back of Beyond empires. Still I was able to get the creative juices going and make some progress. Mid week I got the back and sides of the terraced hill spackled and then recoated to (hopefully) cover up the cork layers.

Today I got motivated because we have a typhoon aimed right at us and I wanted to get things done before we lost power for a couple of days. So, I finished the spackling and cut up and installed the "vegetation" as well. I would like to get the undercoat done but I need to be sure that everything has dried completely. So, I guess that I will need to do all of the painting on the other side of the typhoon.

Now, after a bit of storm, recreational drinking, and clean up I should be able to back to painting this next week.

Looks good :)
Keep safe and batten down the hatches :)

Thanks James. This doesn't look like a bad one but every time you take a direct hit you never know :?
-
Yeah, I've been in a couple in Japan and it's the not knowing how bad that's the worst.
See you on the other side though :)
-
Lovely looking rice field. :-* Stay safe!

Excellent bit of terrain there. Hope the typhoon isn’t too bad….

That is so cool,..nice use of word "vertically"...Man do I suddenly have a hankerin for some rice. Really ambitious work ,now you need 10 more ..LOL.

Looking fantastic!

Luckily the typhoon that was lined up on us fell apart as a weather system. We didn't even lose power. I am more than thankful. Instead of cleaning up in my spare time I was able to finish painting and flocking the rice field.

When I have some more time I will pull out my other agricultural and jungle terrain and take some pictures of them together. I have worked hard to make them comperable.

Excellent progress! Really great visual appeal

I hope to turn away from terrain for a while now and get back to painting minis. We shall see.

Good to hear the typhoon fell apart.
That terrain set is perfect, and I love the rice field - looking forward from the cork-layer stage, I was curious to see how it would look in the end, and it's a good one! 8) 8) 8)

Rice fields 3 different ways! You've been watching too many cookery programmes. ;) ;)
Very nice terraces, you've made an excellent job of them Lon. I like the 3 different style of buildings they fit with as well.
Stone 3 ways?
Cheers

You got it John lol lol , though it is my wife that always has the cooking shows on. I am always trying to sneak over and turn it to music.
