Title: Cricket Pavilion
Post by: Sardoo on 07 August 2021, 04:08:30 PM
I have been working on Sarissa's excellent cricket pavilion and would be grateful for some advice.

Having spray painted the building white I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to weather this building so that it looks old and a bit run down.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Sorry, like you sardoo that's as far as I got with mine so I'll be watching this thread with interest.

I've only seen pictures on the web but, it looks pretty straight forward.

I'd use a quality burnt umber acrylic ink (Daler Rowney FW or Liquitex Professional), diluted 1 part to 4 parts water (jars come with a pipette, so it's easy to measure by squirts), wet brushed over the white, followed by a fairly heavy drybrush with slightly off white, followed by a second drybrush, no so heavily with pure white. Remember to rub the brush on a piece of old towel or similar before applying the paint - it's a dry brush, not one soaked in paint, that you want, applied patiently.

The thing here is the brush. I'd use something like a Winsor and Newton 'Winsor Gold series', filbert or long flat, fine hog, size 6, or even size 8.

Acrylic ink is absolutely the best stuff to use for the wet brush because it is slightly translucent and goes on smoothly and consistently, unlike some watered down paint. A small jar (30 ml) goes a very long way - and its ideal for basing figures (again heavily diluted), etc.

For the white paint, I use household emulsion, usually a mix of white and some kind of beige (magnolia or some such), the latter varying by what I have kicking around from house jobs.

Although not exactly what you are doing, here are some 'white houses' done that way.

I don't know if this helps, but I did mine in white, very lightly dry-brushed with grey.

Plenty of room inside for the WI to serve up a cream tea!

Personally I would go with a light warm grey wash (Vallejo game colour grey wash is ideal) followed by a white dry brush to sharpen the edges again.

In the Pulp section there is the Pulp Terrain thread by Wargaming Girl where she and her father, Dave Phipps, use a Minwax Wood Stain over the base colour and then apply the final colour which crinkles up.
Fully explained on Page 6 of that thread.

Sure is a nice-looking piece of kit. As a cricket fan I want one, but I really have no use for it at all.  :)

Since when has that ever stopped a wargames purchase?   lol

It stops me with a lot of things, limits on space for things I actually have uses for with terrain...

Lord Snapcase, I wonder if I might enquire where you got the excellent weathervane atop your pavilion?

My apologies Sardoo, only just seen this! It was from a doll's house company called A Trifle Small.
