What's the secret to storing trees as scatter terrain without them getting crushed by other terrain or laying them flat?
Any good solutions?

The best or worst piece of advice is "consider it early enough". That is, avoid difficult shapes and fragile parts already when you buy or make your trees (or any other kind of gaming terrain, for that matter). In the long run, preferring robustness over spectacularity will pay off.
If it's too late for that then, well, sturdy boxes, tall enough for vertical storage. For some types you could also try cardboard dividers that can be found in glassware packaging, moving supplies and such. They're not that difficult to make either. Those may help against full scale pile-ups from tilting and bumps.

Put the trees on scenic bases. Put magnets in the bases. Store on a cookie sheet placed in a box. A quarter-sized cookie sheet fits easily into US legal paper sized file storage box. The box height can be cut to size so as not to waste too much storage space.

I don't think anyone's trees are as tall as yours Digits. lol
I would suggest basing them in clumps, which I do for all
but MY tall trees (Last valley). This reduces the risk of
them falling over in the box. When in use I put some clumps
onto an outline. That shows the limit of the wood & as troops
move through it the clumps too can move.

I have found that 14” is about the max height you can go and still find plastic boxes tall enough to accommodate them. Here are two I have just started. As you can see, nice wide bases so they stand upright. These types tend to clump at the tops of the trees so you are limited to about three / four per box.

As for Last Valley trees, I have been keeping mine in RUB boxes for years, with them coming to very little or no harm, despite me just putting them randomly into the bix and stacking them up.
