Title: [Dark Age Skirmish] By Odins Beard!
Post by: jetengine on August 18, 2021, 09:47:17 AM
I'm usually not much of a historical guy. I like history and reading about it, but all the finangling with accuracy and button counting wasn't my bag. However the Dark Ages is a bit of an exception. As a Brit I have a vested interest, this IS my history afterall. The uniforms aren't exactly complex and the army formation is nebulous at best thanks to spotty historical records, thus giving a bit of leeway.

My current focus is on Ravenfeast, but with the idea being to evolve into Saga.

Hi!
I think that Saga is a good choice if you want players in numbers. I like very much Blood Eagle, and if you like a good share of fantasy or myth in your games this one could be a hit. Besides you won't need as many figures as for Saga. Hope that helps.

Saga is a good way to god. It is one of the best known and played systems for the period.

The first few minis for my Vikings.

Loooong ago I had a terribly painted Saga force, it had one game before my club moved onto a newer system so they gathered dust before I sold a majority of them. The few left I gathered up today. Thankfully I'd already re-painted two for potential ROSD games.

These guys are Foundry Berserkers with Bear pelts.

Now for two more.

These guys I actually bought from here ! No clue what range they are, they were metal and the paper with them said "Shieldwall" but I can't actually find them in the range oddly enough. Not sure what to cassify them as either, maybe Huscarls ? They're wearing mail, have a primary weapon AND a secondary weapon, also nice helmets.

Heres the last of the Saga force, Wargames Factory Vikings I believe. I've currently rebased them and intend to repaint them, also may use some new basing material ideas I've got. Considering how theyre armed (chainmail and a single weapon) they'll probably be Hirdmen.

Added another Huscarl to the group, the last of the Shieldwall minis.

Finished up the Hirdmen. Wasn't 100% pleased with the green trousers, but the shield patterns please me. I don't think they're too bad for my fifth attempt ever at freehanding a design, even if it is s simple one.

I planned to do pretty much the same, cut my teeth on 'Ravenfeast' then move on from there. I enjoy playing 'Ravenfeast' too much now to bother looking at any other options!

Some Gripping Beast Dark Age archers, painted as Viking Bondi Archers.

Limited poses, but a really fun, simple, kit.

Interesting project, and a good start (or new start) with this small force.  :)

Anyway you can't go wrong with individually based Vikings, there are lots of skirmish rules for them.

They turned out rather well. Great start to your Viking raiding force.

My final Huscarl, bringing me up to four. This guy is from Artizan games. Really nice mini.

And to round this warband out, my Jarl. Olaf Sigurdsson, another Artizan mini. This time painted primarily in contrast paints to get across the rich colours his position could gain.

The last great king of the Viking age, Harald Hardrada. With a long, storied life, this warrior kings story covers multiple nations, many battles and significant ambition.

As such an important historical figure he naturally has several miniatures, at last counting I'm aware of eight 28mm sculpts. Some in his more classic Viking armament, others in his Varangian Guard equipment. This one is an old Crusader miniatures sculpt by Mark Sims, originally released with a Warhammer Historical supplement!

He was re-released briefly to coincide with the new Lion Rampant supplement, Viking in the Sun. He's very fun to paint, a sculpt that's quite simple but oozing with character. I'm particularly happy with his stripy trousers.

Thanks kindly :)

Now, to oppose such a fearsome lot. On a rainy isle far from the frozen fjords the Saxons gather.

My lord is perhaps a tad on the fantasy side (running into battle in a hood?) but I think of him as highly pious. "I wish not for god to witness my violence on fellow christians, 'tis a hardship leaders must burden themselves with but I take no joy from it"

Can't fault him, needs his hood up, it's bleedin' freezing in Kleethorpe when the north wind blows!

Finished painting my Anglo-Saxon Thegn, Ealhstan Bylder.

His name took some time to come up with, Ealhstan is a combo of 'Temple' and 'Stone' in olde english and a pre-existing name. Taking the period stance of "last names are more like nicknames", his name of 'Bylder' is my (most likely poor) attempt at writing the world 'Builder' in an olde english fashion. Why builder? Well to keep with the theme of Ealhstans piety he frequently supports the building and staffing of churches, chapels and other religious themed architecture.

The latest addition the the Saxon warband, a Hearthguard with great-axe and a Veteran Fyrd. Both Victrix models. Great sculpting on the Victrix stuff, but their weapons are a tad thin.

Another Hearthguard and two Veteran Fyrd.

The last of my Saxons!

More Fyrd and Hearthguard.

I'm consistently concerned that my fabrics are both wrong and too bright, am I working on the wrong idea?

Finished some wonderful Shieldwall Viking Archers! These guys were a joy to paint, very characterful and not overly festooned with details.

As you get more troops you should keep an eye on Clash of Spears. It's Saga sized forces but with less of the 'mythical powers' but just as much tactical choices. At present they are working on a Dark Age period setting.
