Title: Help needed - can anyone identify the regiment? (ACW)
Post by: vodkafan on 23 August 2021, 10:56:59 PM
I found this pic on the internet, it's obviously from an Osprey book that I don't have.
I just wondered if anyone who has it can tell me what regiment is the NCO on the right a part of?
Then I can do some research once I know where to start.

Thanks in advance chaps

Red trim is usually artillery isn't it? And obviously that's a 23 on his kepi, so that would be the 23rd Artillery Regt of somewhere. Looped braid on the cuffs too, which should narrow it down a bit more. Google tells me there were a few independent regiments of artillery, belonging to the various northern states.

The plate is -
Pennsylvania Zouaves, 1863
1 & 2: Private and Vivandiere, 72nd Pennsylvania, Baxter's Fire Zouaves
3: Sergeant, 23rd Pennsylvania, Bimev's Zouaves

Found here - https://www.minecreek.info/zouave-uniforms/the-bloody-wilderness.html
(Might provide some extra useful pointers)

The vivandiere is wearing the green and yellow arm badges of a hospital steward.  I would imagine the green sash is worn for the same reason.
