Title: Rar Space Lion Question
Post by: beefcake on August 25, 2021, 12:46:02 PM
I remember a range of anthropomorphic space lions. I believe they were called "Rar". But discontinued about 5+ years ago. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Does anyone know if they were picked up by anyone. My googlefu has failed me.

They were by Regiment Games... but that is where the trail runs cold :( .

Yep, those were from Regiment.  I'd try contacting Badger Games - they seem to be manufacturing (or at least selling) some of their ranges, including the Drantakh aliens.  No Rar in sight but maybe they just haven't got the molds in production.  Worst case they might be able to tell you who wound up with the minis.

Good images in this blog review if you want to torment yourself.  :)

If you want Lion dudes generally, Khurasan does 28mm versions of his Sci fi lion folk.

I sent them an email asking about them as well.  If I hear back I'll let the forum know what they say.

Tigers aren't lions.

Nor do lions shoot laser guns lol. Don't see why you couldn't paint the ones with the light helmets as lions. On the bright side, they are lovely figures. Is there a UK source for them?

There's a lion type figure in the Northstar Stargrave old rogues group - https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=15446

If you're going to do figs that are in full armor with a digitigrade stance as the only indication that there's a lion-man inside, you might as well just buy some Tau, paint their feet as boots, and call it a day.

He's a good choice, or for fantasy/low-tech lionmen Iron Wind (and probably Ral Partha Europe) sell the old Litorian figs under the Arcana Evolved header.  Lot of nice sculpts in that oft-forgotten range.

And in 15mm Splintered Light has a whole Leonine range for fantasy/primitive aliens:

And RAFM has 15mm Aslan:

And there's Old Glory's Averum in 15mm scifi:

But none of these are Rar, and I kind of hope it turns out they're available somewhere, or at least might make a comeback soon.  I'd forgotten how much I liked teh look of Regiment's scifi range.

So, it turns out I have these four in the lead mountain - pack B according to that link.

I vaguely remember picking them and their Not Vargr up at the same time. I painted the Vargr, but I've never painted these figures, never even cleaned then.

I'm in UK, so you're just about as far away as it's possible to be, but if you don't have any luck with Badger Games you're welcome to them.

They had not-Vargr?  I missed (or have forgotten) them completely.  What did they look like?

Well, that's an idea! What about using a Tao body with a head conversion then? There must be suitable fantasy figures which you could steal the head off to do the job? My only other thought would be buying the tiger miniatures and making a mane out of green stuff.

Yeah, a head swap might be best.  Can't think of a suitable fig offhand but there's probably something out there.  And you'd have to tolerate the alien hands, Tau only have four digits one each.  OTOH, how many fingers does a space lion have anyway?  :)

Looks like my memory was letting me down again  :( However, in my memory's defense, I bought both sets within a few weeks of each other back in 2012

The Not-Vargr were AR-Men. I bought them from Black Hat Games, although they're now sold by BridgeMiniatures as part of the Cobalt-1 range - link (https://bridgeminiatures.com/product-category/cobalt-1/cobalt-1-ar-men/)

Wow, lots of options there. I saw the ones on Khurasan but wasn't really solde by the armour on them, didn't fit my liking.
I'll take you up on that offer Zemjw if Badger don't respond to me. I do like that one from Northstar as well though. Lots of options.
I'm planning on making a Stargrave crew with a bunch of minis.
I've go t a bunch of those Ar Men as well that I'll be using in the crew with a bunch more from bridge miniatures, Yggraine, Abhor and Palansi (bought from black Hat) Should give me a nice varied crew. Thr problem is, I've got them all stored in my parents house as I'm now renting while my new house is being built. Being in lockdown on top of that compacts the lack of being able to get my toys!
Now I just need to buy Stargrave too, lol

Oh right, those figs.  Is Bridge actually taking orders?  The subject of Cobalt-1 came up here  awhile back and I thought someone had said they weren't responding to emails.

Well I've not received a response yet, but it's only been 1 work day.
