You've nailed it.  They look awesome.  If they've got puttees you could mix it up a bit and have wooden furniture on their SLRs.  Both butt and stocks for early cold war and even a mix for later.  I think I had wooden stocks right up until we changed to SA80.

I don't know about the Army, but in the RAF we had VERY occasional wooden-stocked SLRs issued from the armoury until the 90s, as you say.  Probably fewer than 1% of the total though.

I think I had wooden stocks right up until we changed to SA80.

Answer me this then as I still wonder about it even today. I used an SLR with both wooden and plastic furniture, my groups were appreciably tighter with the wooden furnitured rifles, why? One marksman told me the wood was more 'forgiving' of recoil, another said that's daft!
30 years after first letting fly with the SLR I had another go, and still shot better with a wooden stocked rifle?
Obligatory wargames bit... the DPM on the figures is cracking!

???

I found that I was equally as bad with all of them.  :D

But nowhere near as bad as I was with SMG...  :o
Title: Re: BAOR
Post by: carlos marighela on 07 September 2021, 09:33:52 PM
We never adopted plastic furniture, the Lithgow SLRs were wooden right to the end, the only appreciable differences in the whole production run was a switch from triangular to round hand guards, earlyish/ mid production and the substitution of a green plastic carrying handle.  Zeroed properly they were bloody good to shoot with.  I shot fairly well with the M16 as well and that had placcy furniture.

There shouldn’t have been much appreciable difference due to the nature of the stock. The hand guards/ fore stock make no appreciable difference, ours being essentially laminated plywood with a heat shield. The metal end to the butt stock would cancel out much give in the wood and that would be a variable anyway, dependent on how well the rifle was cared for and whether the stock was given a regular treatment of linseed oil.

Anyway cracking work on that DPM.

My L1A1 has plastic furniture, and I don't have any issue hitting what I aim at.. :D.

And nice work on the BAOR boys.  You too, have done DPM right!

Several people have asked me how do do DPM - I don't normally do step-by-steps as, to be honest, they're a PITA but as I had a bit of time today whilst varnish is drying I've done one. Apologies in advance if there's a bit of Egg-sucking....

#1 Block in the base colour - I use a roughly 50/50 mix of Vallejo English Uniform and Iraqi Sand - it doesn't need to be super neat as it will all get covered up

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51456059071_fc8e2fd5cb_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/150834069@N02/330u9w)

#2 Highlight the base by adding a bit more Iraqi Sand to the mix...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51456798639_1b66f27a9e_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/150834069@N02/46j7Hs)

#3 All over wash of thinned Vallejo Smoke - adds shadows and covers a multitude of sins!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51457014950_ff6a2bb57e_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/150834069@N02/3X2wSH)

#4 Green Blotches - thinned Vallejo Refractive Green (any medium green will do - if you look at any 2 pictures of DPM the colours will be different) - just remember to stop the pattern at seams, pockets et cetera

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51455290897_c73f7c48fb_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/150834069@N02/R84NXx)

#5 Brown Blotches - thinned Vallejo Flat Brown (as with the green, the colour doesn't really matter)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51456308078_d1ea9393a6_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/150834069@N02/42900k)

#6 Black Squiggles - thinned Vallejo Black with a drop of German Camo Black Brown added to take the edge off

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51456058686_081963f11f_o.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/gp/150834069@N02/0408kk)

#7 Colour in the rest...

Lovely daubing but if you are looking to depict the green lightweight trousers you should file off the right hand cargo pocket.

Very OCD I know but I had to do it, plus file off the the shell dressing pocket on every jacket arm for a platoon’s worth of 1960s era Brits and I want every other bugger to feel the pain too. :D

Strangest roadside assistance I’ve seen. Nicely daubed though. A handy reminder to splsh some more cash too.
