Troop of Shewe used aquarium plants for his Mexican ones, the furrows were slightly opened out to allow figures to move between them. It may work but suppose if you want yellow corn etc you may need to paint them

Well the worm's eye view looks darned effective.
From above it looks a bit 'thin', but it's a very cunning idea.

You are a bit of a perfectionist, aren't you, Richard?
All: It can certainly be seen in his layouts, if you've had the privilege to see them up close. :)
Very nice idea, SI

This looks pretty good though you would have to say the corn/wheat etc had been picked I suppose

I assume they are silfur tufts or some such, might be worth scanning Antenocitis workshop?
I know they do flowers and things like that which would make any cornfield look a bit more realistic and natural as I am sure they would have crept into the fields in those days

Moi?

I had some success making individual tall corn plants from cheap green garden twist-ties. It is a bit of a slow process if you are trying to fill a board with them, but from the scope of your example above, it is a weekend's effort. I seem to have deleted pics of them off my photobucket so I'll have to snap some new ones later, but here is a link to the article that inspired:

Rather good, Silent Invader. I've seen those aquarium ball thingies before in my local aquarium shop...
Your quest for the true corn will earn you reward from the Gods of modelling ;)
Meanwhile in my first field I've planted - er.. green cabbagey things in rows. Another field is going to be an orchard. The third field is currently earmarked for corn (earmarked - geddit?). Or something cereal looking anyway.

Er.. hang on a minute. Is this the creator of the Duke of Nutherland's Kennel Club of Monemasket speaking?
Who was it that had to track down all available breeds of 28mm doggies and match them to appropriate owners?
;)

This morning I discovered a shop called The Range (link (http://www.therange.co.uk/)) and in the pond department (note, pond, not aquarium) found something made from soft plastic called a 'moss ball' that when trimmed up seems to give quite effective corn stalks with painted cobs.
I have a mat of those, found in the aquarium section... ;-)

The difference is that it comes effortlessly to me since I am a natural aesthete. (Just shittin' ya...)
That last crop of corn is even better, SI. How does it take to a dusting of matt spray to dull the plastic sheen just a tad?

Nice idea, I'll consider copying your second try after I'm done with my wheat-fields. I'm still searching for a cocos doormat for a wheat-field. Unfortunatly I cannot find any pure ones anymore, only with flowers, dogs and other decotrations. I'm really despearte and allready wondered if my parents would mind if I'd steal their used one o_o

They look quite good.
I like the idea of having the troops move through the fields rather than over them and have my fields cut into removable square sections as some of my games use stands of figures. That said, more often than not we will foget to put the removed sections back in the heat of battle wich kind of defeats the purpose ::)
There are some photos of my field s here if you're interested in taking a look:

I like you plugs of corn and wheat though :)

I know what you mean. I found some at our local supermarket and I was going to buy 4 or 5 but got 'thee look' from my wife. They were perfect for 15mm and when I went back to buy more the only ones I could find were those that were decorated and embossed :( On the upside my wife now looks out for me whenever she goes anywhere shopping :D
I've found IKEA here in Australia stocks dormats which may fit the purpose. These are more of a bristle type than what I know as a cocos type. Not sure if their range is standard worldwide but they may be worth looking at.

Barry S, sometimes KMart in Oz carries a cheaper version. A friend picked one up for me as my local KMart did not stock them and it was only $AUD5 for a double A3 box size. Ikea ones seems to be about $AUD20 for the same size.

Thanks Mate! Yep they're the ones. I'll keep a look out at other KMarts. The only ones I've seen at our local KMart aren't rubberbacked like the IKEA ones.

That is great looking terrain, Barry :-*

looks pretty good. :)

Looks VERY good! :-*

Looks great Silent Invader!
-
Brilliant. Really the good stuff, well done and well demonstrated to boot!
-
Silent... you, and so many of this forum, are leaders in inspiring noobies, like me.
That looks a lot like that d@mn corn field I wrecked a motorcycle into when I was in my 20s. lol
Beee-uuu-ttt-ful!!! :-*
-
I think they turned out rather well :)
-
A common way of doing corn as in "maize" fields is to use pieces from the green artificial christmas trees.
With the wire trunk and green leaves they work a treat.
-
Looks really great!

A really good idea. I like and use those aquatic plants already, but to have a way to be able to get into the fields without having rows too far apart to look realistic is a great idea.
