Title: Plan Unthinkable
Post by: swiftnick on September 29, 2021, 12:21:25 PM
I had just recently finished two long running modernish projects in 15mm. These were Iran/Iraq war and my AK47 armies. I thought to myself that I quite enjoyed that once I got going that is. The 15mm AFV's and figures are quick and easy to paint. So started casting around for another 15mm project. My AK47 armies are unusually based in the 1950's being Suez British vs Egyptians and French vs Vietminh. I quite fancied something set around the same era perhaps slightly earlier.
In July 1945 Churchill had the Joint Planning stuff work up plans for a lightning attack on Soviet forces in Europe with the aim of pushing them out of Poland. I used this Plan Unthinkable as my starting point. Although I wanted  to set the action slightly later to allow more Gucci kit.
A quick order to Hannants gave me the starter of a Soviet tank force:

I also have loads of Soviet armour as part of my AK47 Egyptians

I got some of the cool Peter Pig assault troops as a start for my infantry. These are armed with burp guns etc and wearing body armour. Using the flame thrower bases as RPG bases.

RPG as in captured panzerfausts, or prototype RPG-1?
Am sure someone makes 15mm Soviets with Panzerfausts.

If you need things like A39 Tortoise or ARL-44 or US T-34 heavy tanks check out 3d printed companies:
3D Specialist models are great in printed resin (rather than printed plastic)

https://battlefield3d.com/product/t34-heavy-tank/

but also see:

And over at the Wargames Vault I have a whole series of alternative WW2 organisation charts if you wanted to expand the idea:

RPG bases as I am probably going to tinker about with the AK47 rules.
Thanks will look at those but probably just expand my AK47 Brits so centurians and I have bought a couple of Conquerors.
Those army lists are they weird war as in walkers and stuff?

"Those army lists are they weird war as in walkers and stuff?"

Oh no, they take historical and just-post war actual OOBs and add in existing prototypes such as T-44, ISU-130, ARL-44, 3.45" Burney, Tortoise, Centurion Mk.1, Sentinel IV, E-100, E-50, fully tracked APCs and so on, alongside existing WW2 kit.

I’ve purchased printed versions of the WW2.5 army lists a while ago and was wondering if they were still available as I prefer hard copies. Thanks

Move it on a couple of years to the Berlin Airlift (1948) and you get even more interesting kit options and a somewhat more plausible back story.

Your "Soviets" definitely lack IS-3 tanks and BS-3 cannon.

These were Iran/Iraq war and my AK47 armies.

Have you posted them? I'd love to see them.

BTW, I would swear there was a (side) plan for rearming the surrendered Wehrmacht units and using them against the soviets, so you could go very creative with the other side of the conflict .

Yes thanks for that!
I did buy two of the Zvesda IS3 kits. But unfortunately couldn't get the hulls to line up properly. I have just preordered a box of the clash of steel models.
As for BS-3 guns. I don't know of any kits in 15mm?

A year later I have returned to this project. After looking at them for ages I finally bought one of the operation Unthinkable boxed sets.
We have been playing a few games of Rapid Fire recently so will probably make this our ruleset.

To get the Brits at a reasonable price I bought one of the starter sets. So now have Germans too. Was thinking of adding a couple of battalions of Fallschimjager infantry.
