You have done some excellent brushmanship on your Soviets. Very nicely done.

Looking good mate.

Nice Day for a Wedding - Batrep
The Soviets received a tipoff that a senior mujaheddin commander was getting married in the local mosque. Based on this intel, a motor rifle platoon with Spetsnaz support, were tasked with a snatch and grab mission.
-
Soviet forces arrived in strength, attempting to surround the mosque to secure the wedding attendees. Immediately they came under fire from insurgents posted around the mosque. This included a T-55 battle tank obtained by the Taliban at the start of the war and hidden in a nearby cave.
-
The unsettled Soviets ended up slotting the Taliban commander instead of arresting him and they subsequently put air to surface missiles into the mosque, killing numerous wedding guess and some additional Taliban leaders.

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold - Batrep.
Following on from the last game: Rob Jones and I fought another battle 12 months on in the campaign timeline. The forces of Afghan Warlord Abdul Haq have been plotting revenge against the Soviet invaders.
-
Foreign money and weaponry is now flowing In Afghanistan and the Taliban are able to take the fight to the Soviets. Warlord Haq has recently received a shipment of surface to air missiles and with these weapons at his disposal, he decides to lay a trap by taking down a Soviet helicopter.
-
Unknown to Afghans, the helicopter contained a Afghan politician who was sympathetic to the cause of the Soviet invaders. Before crashing near a mountain village, the Soviet pilot radioed for support and immediate Evac. The trap was set and the Taliban waited to spring the ambush.
-
While commanding his forces from the back of a technical, Haq ordered all the hidden Taliban to open fire on the Soviet troops attempting the rescue mission. The Taliban manning the recoilless rifle, pumped shot after shot into the Soviet armour with a devastating effect💥

Well, here we go...
A. Lovely Motor Rifle Platoon and Spetznaz. They look great!
B. Same for Warlord Haq and his crew!
C. As for the BatRep, I await further news with bated breath (whatever that is...)! :D
-
Cheers mate 👍🏻
Sorry I have been busy with work I will get round to it sometime next week
-
Love the photos.
Another great period, you have collected.
-
Those Soviets look great
-
Top post mate.
-
What a great project! I especially like the Soviet camo suits, what colour did you use for that?
Also, which rules are you using for the battles?
(one little detail though: Taliban was founded in the mid 90s, had many Sov-Afghan war veterans in its ranks, but as an organization never met the Soviets).
-
Another fantastic looking project, love the in-game photos :-*
-
Meanwhile, the helicopter crew and the Afghan politician successfully debused from the burning wreck and were heading for the nearest cover. Aided by the burning thick black smoke, they hoped to avoid the attention of Afgahn snipers.

Given the amount of incoming fire from the Afghans, the Soviet ground commander called in air support. Within minutes a HIND attack helicopter was inbound to the location, immediately laying down fire in what had quickly become a target rich environment.

-
Despite the arrival and the Soviet attack helicopter and it’s devastating firepower, the Afghans were inflicting heavy losses on the motor rifle platoon, almost completely destroying all of their armoured vehicles and taking a heavy toil on the motorised infantry sections.
-
The Afghan Warlord knew it was essential to destroy or drive off the HIND, but despite pouring AA machine-gun fire and also firing the last remaining Sam missile at the Soviet air asset, the Afghan fire was unfortunately inaccurate and the HIND was free to act with impunity.
-
The HIND was saved by deploying its flare systems.
-
Despite a last ditch effort by a fanatical Mujahideen cell, the HIND was the dominating force. The Afghan politician and the Soviet downed helicopter crew, used the opportunity to mount up in the BRDM and evacuated the battlefield under the superior air cover.
-
A real nail-biter that was. Without that Hind, the Soviets had their work cut out for them, that's for sure!
-
I do enjoy this size of battle, they’re always very close calls and great fun to play
-
You should seriously consider a Raglan's terrain thread. Would love to see just your scenic stuff.

Excellent terrain, figures and game. Looking forward to more.

Hello..may i congratulate you ..very original and interesting project and extremely well painted units..
As i'm in the process of developping a similar project in 20mm..i noticed that your motor rifle unit, probably from the end of the war, is equipped with quite a few AK with grenade launcher, visors and, above all, every man seems sporting a Flak jacket..do you find historical evince for that .that's to say all the men wearing Flak vest.? cause also my minis (old Combat Miniatures 20mm ) are equipped this way but historical evidence picts are scarce..
thanks for your precious advice
-
While body armour wasn't universally adopted in the Soviet Army, it was in widespread use amongst their forces in Afghanistan and it seems that the bulk of production went there in the 1980s. That makes sense as Afghanistan was an active combat theatre.
The Eureka figures are almost all wearing the 6B2 body armour that was introduced into Soviet service in 1981. There are a couple of figures crewing the supporting weapons packs in the 1983 era 6B3 vests, which were a result of experience with the earlier mode in Afghanistan. So yes, having whole units so equipped is correct.
It's just another way that the Soviet Afghanistan contingent look very different to those in Eastern Europe.

Cracking set up!
I'll challenge the view that the Sovs are the bad guys, at least according to western media. lol
I still have a copy of the first one somewhere. I'd pick them up in the old Soviet bookstore where we would occasionally go to pick up bits and bobs for playing enemy party and to (allegedly) be photographed by the feds and Special Branch.
-
Thanks for those clippings mate 👍🏻
-
That's an incredible setup. Looks great, sir! I'm looking forward to the game report.
Carlos, the Soviets are definitely the bad guys in the movie, "Charlie Wilson's War"... lol lol
And now, but that would be getting into politics, right? :D

Today I hosted @WWargamers who took command of the Mujahideen, in an attempt to repel the invaders. The Soviets began cautiously by sending a dog team over the bridge in an effort to detect IEDs. The team were subsequently eliminated by a sniper.
-
Seeing the dog team fall, the BRDM raced across the bridge, only to be hit by a land mine, destroying the vehicle and its crew. The Soviet armour responded quickly and attempted to clearly the potential choke point on the northern side of the bridge. Abdul looked on from his shop.

As the Soviet armour attempted to establish a bridgehead, it was ambushed by two hidden Afghan T-55s. The inexperienced of the Afghan tank crews was telling, as they were unable to capitalise on the surprise attack. Snipers also opened up on the supporting Soviet infantry.

As the Soviet motorised infantry debused off the tanks, they were ambushed by a Mujahideen cell, hidden in Abdul’s shop. The engagement around the bridge was intensifying by the minute, with both sides attempting to win the firefight.

The Soviets at the bridge were now caught in a deadly crossfire, with further Mujahideen emerging from hidden positions. At the north end of the valley, Soviet Paratroopers were dropped in by Mi-8 Hips. The troopers were supposed to be the “hammer” component of the operation.

As the Soviet Paratroopers advanced at the double down the valley, a Mujahideen mortar battery broke cover and quickly set up their tubes in the hill village, looking to rain fire down on the advancing paras.

Hearing outgoing mortar fire to his rear, the Afghan sniper on the rooftop, switched his fire up the valley and scored a long range head shot on a paratrooper lieutenant. In response, the motorised infantry commander, called in an artillery strike on the sniper’s position💥

Given how desperate the situation was around the bridge, more Soviet motorised infantry were thrown into the fray. Their weight of numbers, took a toll on the mujahedin fighters. At the north of the valley, Afghan mortar fire almost completely wiped out a section of paras.

Following a successful radio request to the Soviet QRF stationed at Bagram, a HIND gunship arrived on station and began to acquire priority targets. This was the opportunity the rebels were waiting for, they immediately fired a stinger missile, which spectacularly missed its target.

Given the waste of the expensive American supplied Stinger, the Mujahideen brought up a technical with an anti-aircraft HMG strapped in the back. It peppered the HIND with accurate fire, before scoring a hit on its control system. The HIND dropped like a stone from the sky 🚁💥. Clearly Ian was very happy about this achievement.

The operation was not going well for the Soviets, as the Afghans were making them bleed for every inch of ground.

The Soviets were ordered to intensify their efforts and the armoured units down the centre started to breakthrough the enemy’s noose. The Afghan mortar battery were surprised by a Soviet paratrooper squad who had work their way up the valley and infiltrated to the Afghan rear.

As the Soviet motorised infantry attempted to break through the Afghan second line of defence, they were suddenly ambushed by a squad of Mujahideen hidden on the rooftops.

The position was now looking desperate for the Soviets, with failed attacks at both the south and the north of the valley. The Mujahideen were holding their own and giving some more. Mercilessly slaughtering the enemy whenever an opportunity arose.

Given the deteriorating position, the Soviet ground commander took the decision to withdraw back over the river and called in heavy artillery strikes to cover the retreat. The operation was a complete Soviet failure with not a single operational objective achieved.

There was absolutely no quarter given to the Soviets, because in Colonel Trautman’s famous words (Rambo 3): You expect sympathy? You started this damn war!

I think it could have swayed the battle mate, as the Afghans didn’t have much in the way of anti-air

Sounded like a really fun game but maybe try running it again with Soviet doctrine and ROEs, bags of prep fire before going in.

Brilliant!

The Soviets did have access to artillery support Carlos, which they used to good effect, but I think they could have done with a second HIND.

Great report Gareth, captured the intensity of the battle completely, I'd not realised what a natural guerrilla fighter I was lol lol
-
Well. Just wow! That was quite a fight. Helicopters falling out of the sky ain't never a good thing, particularly if you're the one on whose side it is.
And I love that Soviet T55 with the tuft of weeds stuck in its track.
