Not sure if this post should be here or on the Old West board, but as it’s about the MWWBK rules, thought it sat much better here.
Had a lot of fun putting on a large MWWBK game at Partizan, demonstrating that the rules can cope with much larger games than the usual 24-pt force actions (in this case 400 Lakota taking on 120 US Cavalry) and are also readily tweaked to give a bit more period feel and better reflect the tactics of two very different opponents.
There’s quite a few photos floating around t’interweb, so I’ll just post one here to give a flavour of it

An overview of the table: 12’ x 6’ with Reno starting his charge into the village bottom left, Custer well advanced along the bluffs middle right and Benteen bringing up the packs bottom right.
Figures almost entirely 28mm Foundry, tipis from Acheson Design, other terrain from Last Valley and Treefellas.

I noticed that game when all the pictures began to roll out FB etc on the day. It looked really fab :-*
A great idea too.
Then when the Partizan vids from Chris Breese and Alex from Storm of Steel came out is became quickly apparent that this game was something special- like so many of the games at Partizan on the Ground!

Hey! This is wonderful! Could you post more pictures of the action please?
:o :o :o

I agree with Miltiades. Great stuff! So how did Custer do in your replay?
-
Yeah this game looked great!
-
beautiful table and nice painting figures Sir !
-
Wow…bet that was a great game to play! Looks fantastic!
-
Beautiful table and figures. I too would like to know how your game went and see more photos. Are there any AAR’s of the game? I’m also interested in your mods to the rules for this conflict.
-
Thanks for all the positive comments. I’ll try and upload a few more photos at the weekend, there’s an AAR and photos on the FB ‘MWWBK’ group, for those that use FB, as well as a file of the rule adaptions we used.
Game was run over a very leisurely 4-5 hours with an largely historical outcome though both Reno (killed by the first shot of the game) and Crazy Horse were casualties. Custer’s battalion went down fighting and Benteen was able to extricate about 3 battered companies at the end.
Great fun, maybe a refight of the Rosebud next year, but for that I need a load of scouts.

Would love to see more pictures. Looks great

Yes, please, more pictures here for those of us who don't FB. And the rules modifications, here, too, if you please?

That’s wonderful to look at - nice job

Thanks for the extra photos - and well done on the pony herd! Can also be used as a cavalry remuda.
Looking forward to that pdf.

Thanks all, it was a really enjoyable and memorable game.
Atheling, where are you based? There’s talk of taking the game up York-way sometime next year.

Atheling, where are you based?
I'm in Durham.
There’s talk of taking the game up York-way sometime next year.
Which I would live to see but I'm one of the unfortunates who have been housebound for a year and nine months (I must stop counting!) :)

This is a BLAST ! :o :o :o

Totally love everything about this game, thanks for sharing 👍

That's one of the best looking Plains War games I've ever seen. Splendid stuff.
-
That's superb! Great looking table and figures, I like it a lot! :-*

Thanks for all the positive comments, folks.
Here's the rule amendments we use - still very much WIP and always open to suggestions and criticism.
Just seen the new stagecoach from Empress - I can resist anything but temptation!

Another thanks for the rules modifications link - downloaded and printed and, briefly, perused. Going to think about something special for Apaches "gone to ground" like better shooting ability than other figures gone to ground. Clearly, some significant thought and effort went into these modifications.
Now if I can adjust the die rolling to avoid the 'buckets of dice' I'll really be rolling! :D
-
I’m ‘old school’ and quite like rolling buckets of dice 🙂
One other tweak we’ve experimented with that might answer your Apache issue; we limit Firing 4+ to units with magazine rifles (typically 1890+).
Instead, Sharpshooters/Marksmen reroll 1’s when Firing (once), costing +1pt per unit - it gives them an edge but doesn’t unbalance the game.
-
Simon great mods I look forward to trying them out now that I have a better understanding of Gone To Ground 😀 to me these mods make sense.
-
Fantastic display! I wish I could have seen it in person.
