Title: Advice needed
Post by: jambo1 on 31 October 2021, 09:39:35 AM
In need of a bit of help from the experts here, my brother has passed away and it has fallen to me and my missus to sort out his house etc, anyway onto the question, I found a box of my stuff that has been sitting in his house for over 20 years, due to real life I forgot all about it, in the box are the following-

1. A box of GW plastic Orcs still cellophane wrapped, never been opened. You can make up 19 Orcs inc.command.
2. Skaven screaming bell set, the box is a bit ratty but the contents have never been opened, still vac packed  .
3, Goblin rock lobber, box a wee bit ratty but all contents still in the polystyrene tray.

I have no clue what these are worth as I don't really do fantasy anymore but if they are worth a couple of quid they can help fund a new project. :)

Mods if this is in the wrong place please feel free to put into right one.

You could try looking on EBay for similar items and what they are going for?

Some of it will depend on which versions you have, but generally old warhammer boxed stuff can go for silly prices on the auction site. I'd agree with the suggestion to look for similar on e-bay to get a rough idea.

I did look on ebay and the prices are all over the place, so they didn't really help me to be honest. :? May just bung them on myself and see what happens, thanks for the advice though. :)

Try the Oldhammer Facebook group. These are the sort of thing they go for. Still be worth looking on t’ebay for a guide price, though.

There is an Oldhammer FB group that specifically does valuations, or there's the Collecting Citadel one as well. Checking value on eBay is the same as everything else, look on the SOLD category in OVERVIEW, so you can see what they're actually sold for, not what some hopeful people are hoping they'll get for them, but as with everything else of there is a lot of variation there, because something is only worth what someone will pay. If something sold for £30 on one day and £80 on another (you do get price variations depending on country as well) you can either assume the first seller undercharged, or the second buyer overpaid, or maybe a bit of both! If the auction ends on a Sunday teatime, has good photos and is around the start of the month (payday!) they tend to go for a bit more. The plastics don't sell for a great deal, the metal for more. Original packaging ups the price a little sometimes, but not a huge amount.

Eg. looking on eBay now I've found prices around -

Plastic Orcs - impossible to tell without knowing which version, since they've had so many different ones over the years, but £15-£20 ish might not be far off

Screaming Bell - £20-£30 for the plastic version, £30-£50 for the metal version

Goblin Rock Lobber - £50-ish for either the older or newer metal version

Sorry for your loss. Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs but make the listing as descriptive as possible, start with a reasonable opening bid, and make it a 10 day listing, the items will soon attract appropriate bids.

Many thanks gents, plenty food for thought, I will probably list them on ebay and see what I get. :)

Update on these items, Screaming Bell went for £35.00, Rock Lobber went for £21.05 and the plastic Orcs took me by surprise and went for £53.75, so pretty pleased to say the least, and the proceeds will now go to fund another purchase of lead to add to the mountain!! :)

Yeah, while I'm not a GW fan, I take advantage of their crazy fanbase frequently.  I generally try to fund my hobby with old hobby stuff that I'm no longer using/etc.  GW fans pay a lot of money for old stuff or new decently painted stuff, or anything out of print, etc.

Lately I've ended up getting a lot of models "free" by selling off box components, etc.  I sold 14 plastic Chaos Guardsmen which funded four boxes of miniatures from another manufacturer.  No complaints.  lol

Ha! Well congratulations on a nice ton to splurge on new lovelies, and your brother's old lovelies have gone to new homes.

When using the [letter]Bay auction site to price stuff, I just look at a history of what similar stuff has sold for - it filters out the ridiculous asking prices that never relate to reality.

I'm sorry for your family's loss.
