Title: DalyDR's Fantasy Stuff
Post by: DalyDR on 02 November 2021, 08:09:16 PM
Just finished this Ankheg miniature from Reaper for one of my sons who has gotten into the fantasy side of the miniature thing.  I've been skeptical of these resin ("Bones"?) miniatures from Reaper, seen too many floppy swords and curved spear shafts on them, but this particular piece is quite good, I think.  Nice detail on it overall, and I think the price for bigger-than-human monsters for these figures is fairly good.  The paint job is a bit rushed as I did it in a few sessions between trying to finish my stupid-big Sassanid army for a game no one plays anymore, but it proved to be a nice diversion.  I glued it to a big metal washer as I didn't much like the irregularly shaped integral base, and the washer gives it more stability as well as the option to stick it to a magnetic sheet lined box for transport.  Anyway, here's the bug!

I think that one might be made by WizKids - I have one by Reaper and it looks more like a centipede than this one does. I actually like this sculpt better.

In any case, nice job, it looks useful for a range of games!

Dang!  You're correct!  Shows what I know about non-metal figures . . .
Title: DalyDR's Fantasy Stuff (9/4/2022: Ogre)

Resurrecting this thread because I finally painted another miniature for my son's very own burgeoning collection of (unpainted) fantasy miniatures, this time an "Ogre Chieftain" from Reaper.  I suspect this guy may be loosely inspired by one of Angus MacBride's Lord of the Rings works featuring a troll about to smash some guy to pulp (from the cover of a supplement to the old ICE Middle Earth RP game), so I think of him as a well armored and probably unusually intelligent/evolved troll.  As an aside, there's another miniature in Reaper's catalog, a Bob Olley sculpt I think, that's obviously derived from that MacBride image, but this one shows hints too, especially in some of the armor.  At any rate, here's the guy:

This also displays my first attempt at "chipping" armor.  Did the whole piece-of-sponge-as-applicator thing, and think it worked out well enough that I'll try it again on some other miniatures.

Still not sure about these "Bones" miniatures made out of this polymer, the haft of the mace on this one isn't truly straight and cleaning mold lines (I missed a few here . . .) isn't the easiest, but I do like this model, and the price comparison between this material and metal versions is tough to beat.

Edit:  Tried to change thread title, seems I was unsuccessful, ugh.  Any pointers on this?

To change the title on threads I started, I go to the first post in the thread and click the ‘modify’ button. I can then modify the text of the thread’s main title. Save the change (button at bottom of the first post), then you can add a new post to the thread and it will have the new title.

Regarding the ogre model, he looks great! I like how your chipping effect turned out. It is one of the techniques I want to try at some point.

Bringing this thread of mine back to life, again, as I've got to painting a bit more fantasy stuff lately.  I haven't painted much fantasy related stuff over the past couple of decades, but one of my sons got into playing D&D a bit, as I did way back when, and has accumulated quite a collection of the newer plastic (?) monsters.  He's more than happy to let me paint them, and they've made a nice occasional diversion/break from my regular "historical" fare.

A Nalfeshnee, or Type IV demon.  I well remember the illustration of this demon from the original AD&D Monster Manual, and think this iteration is an improvement.  Here he looks a bit less goofy, and a bit more menacing.

He was fun to paint.  I like doing the bigger, chunkier figures.

A Cave Troll!

I like this model quite a bit.  He's now one of my favorite troll miniatures, along with the old GW/Citadel Stone Trolls, which I hope to get around to repainting some day.

Lots more critters to come as I get around to photographing them.

One more for today.  I posted him a couple of months back in another thread, but for completeness' sake I'm putting him here.

The Eidolon, or statue from the cover of the 1st edition AD&D Players Handbook, come to life and looking for his missing eye jewel!

An Owlbear.  This miniature has brought Owlbears a long way from the old medal Grenadier model we used to use in the 1980s, which bore more of a resemblance to the U.S. Forest Service's Woodsy the Owl, the Tootsie Roll Owl, or the Wise Potato Chips Owl, than it did a fierce monster.

This was a one-piece model, but I wish I had filled in the gap at its proper right shoulder before painting.  Even so, it's one of the better Owlbear miniatures I've seen, so far.

A Yeth Hound.  Something out of the Monster Manual II from AD&D 1st Ed., which I think was a mostly disappointing book . . .

A Carrion Crawler.  I went a bit Alice in Wonderland with this, the figure reminded me of the hookah-smoking caterpillar, so I went with a slightly whimsical (?) color scheme as opposed to something just sickly and gross, although green is mentioned in the beast's original Monster Manual entry.

Maybe my favorite so far, a Beholder.  I had a lot of fun painting this one.  It came with some alternate eye stalks that are formed so as to show the Beholder casting a spell or something, with a bolt or stream of energy (?) coming from the eyestalk, but I went with the plain ones instead.  I used a product called "Dimensional Magic" from Mod Podge to fill the central part (pupil and iris) of the primary eye, which gave a nice effect, though it doesn't really come through in this photo.

Nice figures. I especially like the owlbear and the beholder.

The ogres all look great! The blue skin works well with the warm tones in the leather bits and the neutral tan colours.

Painted this up in fairly quick fashion (for me) today.  A Grell.  I did not follow the color scheme in my Fiend Folio from 1981, which describes it as mostly "olive drab", which sounds boring.  So it's now a purple-brained, black bird-beaked, green-tentacled Grell.

I agree that an olive-drab brain just wouldn't do (but I'm happy to be proven wrong if anyone from the League of Olive Drab Brain-Painters wishes to make a case). Great work! Don't think I'd seen all of these before- the monsters are all great, but I especially like the colors on your ogres!
