Title: Big Trouble in Little Mercia: a solo 7th century scrap
Post by: James Morris on 24 December 2021, 06:24:29 PM
Robbed by Covid of two games that I had fixed up this week with friends, I got my Saxon and Welsh armies out of the loft and set-to with a solo game. Once again, I’m still play testing my own Midgard rules. The game revolves around Reputation, represented by a pair of goblets full of tokens (one for each side). As heroic deeds are performed, Reputation is gained, but it can be lost by cowardly deeds and running from the battlefield. This time out, I was experimenting with a few extra ways to gain Reputation, with a special bonus for a hero leading the first charge of the battle. This would prove decisive in the game that followed.  Suffice to say that the Welsh carried the day as the Saxons over-extended themselves and ended up fighting piecemeal.  It was pretty bloodthirsty stuff too, as five out of six leaders died in the battle.

It was a great pleasure to get my old Welsh and (even older) Saxons out of the loft - the collections are largely Gripping Beast but with many Black Tree, Foundry and Footsore Minis added over the years.

Full report and many more pics can be found on the blog here:  https://mogsymakes.net/2021/12/24/big-trouble-in-little-mercia-some-7th-century-gaming/ (https://mogsymakes.net/2021/12/24/big-trouble-in-little-mercia-some-7th-century-gaming/)

Merry Christmas to you all.

Thanks everyone!  Thoroughly enjoyed getting these figures out again. I suspect that more units for the Welsh will follow in 2022 when the Footsore Kickstarter minis arrive.

Really a nice looking table. The shot of them being pushed back to the beach is very evocative!
