2021 is coming quickly to a close, and it is time for us all to reflect on what we have achieved and accomplished for our hobby over the year.
I have a blog post up on the topic for those so inclined: http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2021/12/random-close-of-another-year.html (http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2021/12/random-close-of-another-year.html)
The highlights are below:
1. No more pile of shame!
2. I painted 300+ miniatures this year, mostly ancients.
3. Published the 2nd of 3 Blue Books for Osprey- Wars of the Republic
4, Got three publications to my Wargame Vault page this year
5. Played about 2 games a month
6. Have a regular RPG group going
7. Improved my website and started a Patreon
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z0b-jdqf_kM/YaejJh70I2I/AAAAAAAAQN8/XtGnaf3tOUomySTBCCOflV-3x2V-5f0NACPcBGAsYHg/w480-h640/IMG_4057.JPG)
Overall, not a bad year!
How about you? What did you finish up in 2021? Time to show off! Pictures are encouraged!

No more pile of shame is quite the accomplishment! Well done!
My list is as follows:
1. Bought stuff
2. Painted stuff (unfortunately less than I bought this year...last 3-4 years I've decreased mountain).
3. Got my (10 y/o) son his own minis which now need to be painted o_o
4. Played some games
5. Worked on a rule set for an upcoming convention.
-
I built a Skelly Army, finished an 'Airfix Yesteryear' project with figures/models from the dawn of time. But this year's peasta di resistence has been turning a small Wargames Emporium into a ginagerous Wargames Emporium!
:-*
-
I did up my game quite considerably in 2021 but I didn't take note since 2019. I have painted a lot and spent much less, because more focused.
On the other hand, it hasn't translated into projects finished and units finished. Rather I have loads now that are 90% finished.
-
As for me, I've managed to dabble a bit...
1. Painted 136 28mm figures, as well as 2 28mm vehicles.
2. Developed scenarios for, and ran games at, 3 wargame conventions (Yay!). And attended a 4th.
3. Developed 3 "What if...?" scenarios (1 for AWI, and 2 for War of 1812), and played them with my gaming group.
4. Speaking of which, played 2-3 times a month with them, alternating between historical games and fantasy RPG campaigns.
5. Added to my terrain and vehicle stuff.
6. Obtained about 20 already-painted 28mm figures.
7. Added to my shelves of shame... 8)
7. Joined the Lead Adventure Forum!
Pretty good year, I'd say...and it's on to 2022!

2021 has been a good year actually.
Lots of good stuff, but the stand out has been hosting my first online Zoom game for a Virtual Lard. Game went great and, most importantly, they liked it so much they came back for a second time. Very pleasing. Now teeing up to play a larger game for whenever the next Virtual Lard day is. More people, most WW1 misery and (one hopes) more good times.
-
2021 has been a very good hobby year. Finished my Bugman's Lament project (See project thread below)
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=132460.0
Started playing games regularly again, moved into a house and got a proper games space back after many years of apartment living.
Hoping 2022 continues the positive trend.
-
Highlights:
1) Painted 148 miniatures (not including a large amount of terrain painted/built) These are mostly 28mm, but I count a base of 15mm figures as a single figure (so 4-5 minis = 1 figure at that scale).
2) Met a guy who lives 10 minutes away and we've been gaming up a storm. Easily 100 games or more this year.
3) "Finished" my German 15mm opfor and 15mm Soviet force.
4) Nearly finished writing a large game I'll be selling.
5) Nearly finished writing two more smaller games I'll be selling.
6) Acquired a full Old West town to replace my current one - a project for 2022 proper.
7) Continued to sell off excess bits, models, and spare junk to fund my new hobby projects (try to maintain a very tiny output of money on new hobby stuff).

Banner year for painting - so far, not quite over: 1,351 figures painted plus 170 pieces of railroad track painted, bases textured, and seal coated, all in 15 mm. Was working today on 85 figures trying to finish by end of year, getting to the minor detail stage, and trying to push it to 149 total or more figures by end of week to make it to a nice round 1,500 figures, doable but a challenge to add 64 figures - at least more than enough primed and ready to paint with skin tones already done.
Motivation for production from a club-within-the-club painting club I got going at the end of last year. Will start another one for 2022 for the local club to see if I can do it again. I set myself a public monthly quota of 85 figures and sometimes even hazarded a stretch goal. Toyed with - but backed off in a bout of sanity - trying to do 1,000+ figures in one month. Best month was 474 figures painted, a couple months goose-egged.
Bought a bunch of Old Glory 25s new 15/18 mm Indian Mutiny figures, also waiting on a order for a bunch of Old Glory 15s Anglo-Egyptian Sudan figures - with a few of those hole filling items mentioned below.
Only reason I haven't finished collecting my QRF German East Africa collection is because they still haven't released their Belgian and Portuguese figures or the Ruga-ruga and porters. Also hoping for some more African animals from them.
Picked up a new scale for me: 10 mm Vietnam and did a fell-swoop purchase and got everything I expect to need as far as figures, vehicles, aircraft, and buildings (that last might get added to - maybe). A bunch of terrain items like rice paddies also collected in.
Except for GEA figures, I'm at the tail end of adding figures to all of my sundry collections - filled in all the holes I was aware of with some minor orders here and there. Will take quite the item to tempt me going forward. Buildings are likely to be the most tempting items - but I prefer resin and not much new on that horizon that I've been able to find (feel free to enlighten me on the 15 mm new buildings in resin front).
Another 20 years of such production and I'll get everything painted! lol

Did a bit, see pages 39 to 65 (link below)

The hope (cover your ears those that know me)
is to get sorted in the coming year (2022). To be fair
to myself this has already seen progress:-
ACW is now at an (almost) complete stage. I can take
stuff off the shelf & field a complete game, i.e. figures
for both sides, scenery & rules I like.
I finally entered a 'Build Something' competition (got nowhere).
Gave away a LOT of stuff.
AND the Really Useful Boxes of figures are now (pretty much)
in chronological order with rules along side.
Still a Looooooooooong way to go, but hey there is always next year.
lol lol lol
-
Painted or re-painted lots of figures - mainly ancients and fantasy. This year bought very few figures for a change though I did add quite a few to my Early Imperial Romans. Reorganised wargames room.
Best of all spent time playing games, some on Zoom.
-
time for us all to reflect on what we have achieved and accomplished for our hobby over the year.
How about you? What did you finish up in 2021? Time to show off! Pictures are encouraged!
A noble sentiment.
If we could please just keep it to achievements in the forum’s field of interest - viz. wargaming, modelling, etc. That’d be good :)
-
A lot of the above are hard acts to follow :)
Although you should never say never, I feel I have finished off a number of projects this year i.e. my 28mm WW1 Russians, WW2 Germans and my Byzantine/Rus although with the latter I only painted about a quarter of it.
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=134458.0
So now I am only painting on two fronts, Greek hoplites and AWI. Both these projects are well established with enough already painted for both sides for a really good sized game.
I am a slow painter so it feels good to be in this position not feeling pressured by being too thinly spread.
That said a book faithful Middle-Earth project looks to be in the offing for 2022 :)
-
Wargaming-wise?
Almost nothing.
Painted three regiments for my 1745 project
And finished my Anglo-Saxon Army (finished, he says! The nerve of this guy!)
That's about it.

I painted about 2/3rds of the the proposed plan, with lots of 15mm WW2 terrain and German forces completed along with a few bits fir 28mm Sudan .10mm ACW has moved very close to completion with just some cavalry left to do
A new project was injected that has progressed massively - the 28mm Vietnam has been good fun to create and still has legs next year . With the first very large game today !

Storage wars has been re-visited with more RUBs and MDF inserts being set up
The last few months has been taken over with dealing with the death of a close gaming friend and sorting out collection which has been a sad duty .

I find myself sitting squarely in the Venn Diagram where "naff" meets "all". :(
Some (not enough) commission bits painted, possibly a dozen figures for myself, and yet continuing to fill the drawers to bursting with additions to existing, unpainted collections....
So a typical year for me, really. lol
-
I am inclined to think that my 2021 was in no way more productive than previous years although I did a get few mins painted, some games played and some terrain made. Early in the year as part of the Analogue Hobbies Challenge I got a number of early medieval figures done (ostensibly for Saga):
Irish by Crusader:

Normans from Conquest Games:

18mm Crimean War Turks and French from Eureka:

I finished my Black Stone Fortress project I started in 2020:

I enhanced my terrain collection by adding some trees and spent quite a bit of time enhancing a Warbases church:

I am currently working on 15 Warriors of Gondor from GW's MESBG which will probably be done by the end of the year.
I also got a few games in including two ECW games using Pike and Shotte, a game of Age of Eagles, a Crimean War game (featuring the unusual occurrence of freshly painted figures not only not running off the table, but also gaining the victory!), Black Powder and my first game of What a Tanker.
-
I find myself sitting squarely in the Venn Diagram where "naff" meets "all".
I suspect that Jolly Bob is far from alone. Im still living with ill-considered aquistion, starting miyriad new projects I swore I wouldn't touch, and unable to manage the even near completion of anything.
But one day, one day, you will look on my works ye mighty and despair!
Which means I have had a throughly engrossing and enjoyable year again.
-
2021 was quite a good year despite the usual setbacks.
PROS:
Played 14 games.
Painted 672 figures (1 more than 2020) comprising of 230 x 15mm and 442 x 25mm figures.
Re-modelled my painting table.
re-built my gaming to an 8ft x 5ft to give a bit of extra room on the flanks.
CONS:
Bought far too much new lead :-)

I’ve been keeping track of painting since 1995, and games played since about 2001. This has been a middling year, with participation in 28 games (a mix of refereeing, playing, and solo), and 160 figures painted (spread out over about seven projects). No painting projects reached a planned completion, and three entirely new projects were acquired. :-[
A solo campaign has moved sluggishly along, but I didn’t develop a new campaign for the 40mm 18th century imagi-nations project, so that goes at the head of next year’s list.
-
This year's been a fairly rubbish one for games, but it was a good one for me on the painting front:
Napoleonic Russians (AB 18mm) - 72 Foot & 6 Guns
Napoleonic French (AB 18mm) - 24 Horse
SYW Bavarians (OG 15mm) - 76 Foot, 1 Horse & 1 Gun
SYW Austrians (OG 15mm) - 12 Foot
SYW French (Eureka 18mm) - 263 Foot, 83 Horse & 6 Guns
SYW Prussians (Eureka 18mm) - 232 Foot, 5 Horse & 1 Gun
SYW British (Eureka 18mm) - 84 Foot
SYW Hanoverians (Eureka 18mm) - 128 Foot & 1 Horse
SYW Reichsarmee (OG 15mm) - 68 Foot & 3 Guns
SYW Hessen-Kassell (Eureka 18mm) - 16 Foot & 1 Horse
SYW Schaumburg-Lippe (Eureka 18mm) - 12 Foot
Total 15/18mm - 963 Foot, 114 Horse & 17 Guns
ACW Union (Pendraken 10mm) - 371 Foot, 38 Horse, 15 Guns & 11 Vehicles
ACW Confederate (Pendraken 10mm) - 217 Foot, 44 Horse, 6 Guns & 2 Vehicles
Total 10mm - 588 Foot, 82 Horse, 21 Guns & 13 Vehicles
Out of idle curiosity, I calculated how much that lot is worth at current catalogue prices... £1,080.23! :o And being a typical wargamer, I bought at least twice that amount of models during the year... :D
I also painted three villages'-worth of 15mm buildings and village tiles from Total Battle Miniatures and built the 6'x8' Stones River battlefield for 'Warfare' (and won 2nd prize for best demo game).
Gamewise, I did a solo 10mm ACW game during lock-down (Shiloh, the Hornet's Nest), a small refight of Buford's delaying action at Gettysburg (to teach a friend the rules while he was down here on holiday) and then the aforementioned Murfreesboro/Stones River game at Warfare. I also played three games at Phil Portway's place; a 15mm Peninsular War refight (the name of which I've forgotten - sorry Phil!) and two 15mm SYW refights - Lobositz and Gorlitz/Moys. We also played a couple of nostalgic games of Spacehulk, but that's been it.

First rule of wargaming...never post what you spend....second rule of wargaming...never post what you spend...
Loose lips...sink marriages and all that ... ;) lol
Back on topic....very impressive haul for this year....can’t believe you only spent £10.80...well done.

Happy (almost) New Year folks!
First let me say that I'm always agog at what so many of you accomplish in a year, not just in terms of quantity (though that's impressive to say the least) but quality as well.
I won't bore you with pictures of my stuff (I"ve been posting at the Isolation Painting CHallenge on Facebook) but this year was nearly as successful as last, with 650 figures (including larger models, terrain etc.) painted up. All over the place: Warhammer and 40k stuff (especially older figures), Battletech, other fantasy and science fiction, and various historical figures (FIW, Napoleonic figures, including Spanish, French, and British, and World War II Americans, Australians and Soviets).
More importantly, my son (now 14) and I got to our first Historicon, and he and I have been playing quite a bit. He has participated in several Smithsonian "Soldiers and Dioramas" online programs, where he's been working in 1/72 on various historical/military subjects and playing through the scenarios, with adult instructors providing the materials and guidance, and he received a number of Black Seas fleets (yes, fleets!) from friends of mine for his 13th birthday and bar mitzvah, and he's really leaned into painting Napoleonic French, FIW, and more recently 28mm WWII. So I get to be in awe of his skill (Significantly better than mine at that age) and have a lot of fun playing with him as father/son bonding time, and that's been precious to me.

Thankfully I've got a good 'un... :D
And her eyes glaze over whenever I mention wargames, so she probably wouldn't register what I'd just said. In my defence, those AB Napoleonics and Old Glory SYW figures were just around 15p when I bought them and they've been languishing in the Lead Crypt since the mid-90s! :D

Update now that I've finished this early December 31 morning (where I am) and I know I won't finish any more figures today and as posted in our local club's 2021 Painting Club, keeping a running track of quotas and completions month by month more or less, you can see there was a three month 'doldrum'. The 170(T) refers to painting 170 pieces of 15 mm railroad track from QRF, some modified as 'fitter' pieces. Painted a lot of critters, mostly domestic farm animals, like 96 longhorns plus a half dozen dead ones, but quite a bit for East Africa, like another 96 African Cape Buffalo - but only 4 dead. The vast majority of the people were natives for East Africa, 19th century exploration era more or less. Why so much poultry? Well somehow I bought them so I've painted them - or will, geese and ducks already completed, not so many though. Good enough reason for me.:
December quota: 85
December total: 161
November quota: 24
November total: 34
October quota: not specified (technically 85, my original goal per month, I guess)
October total: 0
September quota: 85
September total: 0
August quota: 360 (stretch goal of 480)
August total: 4 "ka-thunk"
July quota: 360
July total: 309
June quota: 360
June total: 474
May quota: 85
May total: 170(T)
April quota: 85
April total: 132
March quota: 85
March total: 48
February quota: 85
February total: 145
January quota: 85
January total: 154
2021 quota: 1614
2021 Total: 1512 + 170(T) =1,682 (everything in 15 mm)
I got the 85 quota for December finished! That was the 52 figures for my Maasai-ish figures and the native leaders and great white hunters added another 33 figures. And then a few things to bring the total up - including the 43 figures for the Witch Doctor force. And to push hard the last few days I added in 30 ducks and 3 chickens, less poultry to paint - just a whole bunch of chickens, two varieties to finish (60+72 poultry to go). That got me up to 161 figures for the month and 1512 for the year - not counting the railroad track pieces. And that means my monthly average, despite a couple of goose eggs and one very low production month, made it to 126 figures painted per month. And that was a bit of a miscalculation because I thought I was adding enough to get to 151 and just past 1500 but, fortuitously, it was enough more to reach that 'magic' number. And the end result? I am going to start 2022 with 125 figures a month as my basic quota - that would be another 1500 figures painted if I reach the goal. We won't know until a year from today if I end up embarrassing myself - or maybe doing like I did this year and blast past my original 85 per month quota I started with at the end of 2020 for my 2021 painting goal which I really thought was a pretty far out there goal, I would have been excited if I only did 500 total figures and I tripled that amount! I'd say that's worth a Whoo-Hoo!
(Above only includes what I painted for myself to be kept in my personal collection. Excluded are the figures painted for me by others - don't have a final tally for that but I'd say around another 150-200 figures - US Cavalry and Old West stuff - of which much more to come in 2022, hopefully.)
-
No idea on the number of figures - technically zero as they all need basing lol but did complete two whole armies for One Hour Wargames from blocks and a couple of 40K terrain bits.
Amazingly, for the first time in years I did manage to roll a few combat dice in a handful of games (https://www.thewargameswebsite.com/forums/topic/slow-mind-small-games/) so it's a win for me as well.
Best wishes to all for 2022

I survived ... I painted about 1/10 of what I thought I would for myself, but I did get to paint some great collections for other people and ... I survived.
Look after yourselves, look after your loved ones and ... survive my friends.

Tough year for me personally but one thing I did do was buy an airbrush - something I've wanted for many years. Happy with it but need more practice
-
Well the lead & plastic mountains that I accumulated over 10 years ago are finally cleared, apart from 3 Daleks awaiting conversion & a Black Scorpion Winston Churchill awaiting paint! I feel that a great weight has been lifted from my mind as well as from the joists in the loft.

On the down side it was adifficult year that saw a forced job change and day to day challenges due to the pandemic ...
But I did finish writing the follow up to my Sugar Islands Campaign - "Against Spain" a few days ago. That will be off to the publisher soon.
I finished and ran several games with my lockdown projects - Crimean War and late 16thC Scots.
The highlight though has to be helping to set up and run the best of show demo at Partizan - "A descent on the French coast" A wonderful weekend away, great company and a damned good show too!
So it's not been a bad year for gaming at all :D

I find myself sitting squarely in the Venn Diagram where "naff" meets "all". :(
Some (not enough) commission bits painted, possibly a dozen figures for myself, and yet continuing to fill the drawers to bursting with additions to existing, unpainted collections....
So a typical year for me, really. lol
Me too! I painted a few things, maybe 100-150 miniatures of one sort or another all at the skirmish level as these are the sort of games I am playing now. Also painted up a fair brace of scatter terrain for post apocalyptic/sci fi skirmish gaming.
I know what JollyBob is talking about with optimistic purchases. I have painted one of the plastic Stargrave guys and am now working out how many things to add to my Crooked Dice space stuff pledge (with Star Schlock also yet to arrive), amazing how I am able to delude myself with empty promises of future productivity.
On the positive side, I have enjoyed gaming where possible and played out a full campaign of Stargrave (with Quarantine 37 just started), a couple of Star Wars Legion campaigns and pick up games, some Strontium Dog and a lot of Dragon Rampant. The family has played a lot of boardgames over lockdown which has been both fun in and of itself and useful in keeping us all sane.
The Little Fish are enjoying Dragon Rampant, for which we use our LotR armies, which is great and have gotten into Warhammer so we can all sit down and paint and play together.
So, yeah, got some stuff done but no where near as much as I thought I would. Typical.
I survived ... I painted about 1/10 of what I thought I would for myself, but I did get to paint some great collections for other people and ... I survived.
Look after yourselves, look after your loved ones and ... survive my friends.
Thanks, Cubs. Yes, we survived. Having my father in law enter his second year of a six month visit is getting to be a bit wearing but we've got it lot better than many others.
Look after yourselves and your families and better times will be with us at some stage.

I don't have a tally of numbers, but I certainly cleared out a lot of 20mm backlog and a trend set in. Well, a trend over two years.
In 2020, I painted a lot of Blood Bowl and Blitz Bowl. Didn't really play either. But in 2021 I ran a Blitz Bowl league, a Blood Bowl league, and travelled to compete in the largest US Blood Bowl tournament, the Chaos Cup...where I placed the highest of all Orc team coaches...so...am I the best orc coach in the country? ha! ;)
In 2021, I painted a lot of 20mm Post Apoc minis for Gaslands and Zona Alfa...but didn't play either. With a full table, multiple gangs and hostiles done, I expect to play these in 2022.
There's the trend. Work on models for a game/setting all through one year, then play the games the following. If this continues, I'll be playing a lot of * Rampant family games in 2023 because those are my 2022 hobby projects.

Strictly buy and paint as I go from now on!
Well done Onebigriver! This is the situation I am aiming for. In the thick of it right now. Somedays it seems hopeless task chipping away.

Thanks, I felt like that too at times, but it can be done!

I lost track of the number of miniatures I painted in 2021. I know I painted 134 in Jan, 42 in Feb and 47 in March before I stopped counting. More importantly I got all my Zombies finally painted, so now got 300+! Eventually, I got down to less than 50 figures (including some Daleks) left to paint at one point. Those 50 were the ones that I kept putting off due to lack of enthusiasm. Unpainted numbers have gone back up (due to Black Friday sales) but I'm still below a 100 figures to paint.
Also, what was nice to do, was that I actually completed a fantasy campaign.
My goal for 2022 is get the figures painted and to summon up the willpower to tackle my outstanding scenic items.

At a quick count, at least 365ish miniatures painted for the year. Probably a few more I didn't photograph. The big thing is of course two playable forces for a brand new game; SLUDGE.
The year was a little light on the wargaming of course, but I am quite happy that I managed to keep on being productive.
