Title: (Commercial) New Fantasy from Crusader Miniatures.
Post by: nicknorthstar on 04 January 2022, 03:49:14 PM
Mark Sims is starting 2022 off with a new line of fantasy figures for his Crusader Miniatures range.

Before now he'd just made a selection of adventurers for his Fantasy section, but now he's expanded it to include Dwarfs, Ogres and Half Orcs.

This is just the start, there's more to come, both expanding the races/ armies that are here and adding new ones.

You can see them here:

These are good looking figures in the typical Crusader style.  I have a lot of their Vikings and a few other bits and pieces.
There has to be almost complete saturation of the market of dwarves in mail.
There is still a lack of metal Elves in mail - will we see these at any time?

Elves in mail would be lovely, I agree. I'm very keen on getting these, I love painting Crusader figures.  There's just something about them that makes painting them very relaxing and enjoyable.

I like those a lot! I need more dwarves and ogres the same way I need another hole in my head, but I might just buy some anyway- especially the ogres. My conversions of GW orcs into Ogres are fun, but they’re much “cartoonier” than the rest of my Oathmark figures. These look like a great replacement, especially if the line expands with some ogres packing shields and hand-weapons.

Rats - I just ordered the Oathmark Trolls.

The ogres might make it into one of my armies.

All really nice sculpts. The half-orcs IMHO just look like human barbarians with trendy haircuts!

My idea of half-orcs is heavily armoured axe wielding types.

those dwarves look nice I think they would fit in with my old Vendel dwarves, the half-orcs look a little to fashionable though and the ogres look more like half giants.

New Goblins. Mark is adding Goblins to his Fantasy range. They actually won't be out next, because there's more Dwarves, Ogres and a surprise addition first, then these Goblins.

Those look promising, and I’m very excited about the new ogres! I picked up the first pack of ogres and I like them a lot.

I have to say that I really like these goblins. Dangerous-looking beggars, with expressive faces.

All of those do look rather nice, especially the goblins, who look great in that horde formation. Is this the total sum of the goblins or are there more to come? I was thinking of army buying going forward.

That is it. Mark Sims goes small compact ranges, but he can be persuaded to expand lines if the demand is there.

The dwarfs are nice. I'm not sold on the goblins they look more like fairy tale elves to me with the hair and pointy ears like Gump from the movie legend. But I guess I was brought up Kev Adams goblins  so anything not like that seems odd to my eye.

I like the goblins, they look like would fit in well for Middle Earth armies, particularly with some of my older models. But then I was never a fan of cartoony GW-style goblins.

I really like the Brood Slaves.
I always liked the look of Broo from Runequest, and I had the Citadel ones from when they were Runequest figures not Chaos Beastmen. In particular they grabbed my imagination because so much of my fantasy influence was Tolkien-esque, but the Broo were something completely unrelated to that source, and looked great.

Need to get some painted up ASAP.

Now the Crusader goblins have been out for a while, does anyone know how they compare in size to say the 28mm Crusader Dark Ages? I am assuming as they are badged as goblins they are smaller in stature? I really like the figures apart from them not having helmets. I am hopeful there will be further releases of packs with helmets?  :)

Andrew Taylor has also painted some of the Brood Slaves, though he took a bit more time. He's also painted some Ogres as Fire Giants for our Frostgrave games:

Mark'll do more if sales warrant it, so far these new Fantasy figures have been really well received so I think we'll see more.

The "unclutteredness" of these miniatures is really refreshing - lots of scope for freehand! Very nice!

Here's a quick snap of the Goblin leader alongside a viking hersir from Crusader.

Nice; this makes the goblins just about the right size, but the oger-like types too small to work as convincing Olog-Hai.

A shame, because I really like the models... ;)

I wouldn't have them as Olog-hai, I agree. Olog-hai should be much more bestial and savage.

The Ogres have a real early fantasy feel about them. Just big humanoid fighters. Bodyguards to an evil vizier, or a savage, giant hill tribe. Love them, so 'not Warhammer', not Middle-Earth either.

Thanks for the comparison picture. The goblins look to be the right size for Middle-Earth orcs. Just hoping some will be released with helmets.

That's great, thanks.  They are perfect size for Tolkien Orcs.  Are you able to do a side-by-side of Oathmark goblins?

Sadly no, I don't have any Oathmark ones.
