Tomorrow's the day. I'm moving to Durham tomorrow and I'm wondering what I should bring, miniature wise. I'm going to have to be spartan with what I bring with me, as it is not feasible to ship any substantial number of figures over. I plan on bringing some painting supplies and a fair number of unpainted figures, as these are easy to store.
I was wondering what everyone in and around Durham is gaming at the moment, so I can bring the appropriate painted figures.
Thanks,
-Joe

Good luck with the move mate.
I'm a bit far from Durham so I can't be of any real help, but I'm sure you'll enjoy your time there.
-
Im not that far from Durham, but i aint playing anything, not part of any groups, Im such a lonely soul.... :'(
-
Land of the Prince Bishops. Beautiful place. Can only speak of our own small group. WW2 Skirmish games, Pulp (1920s and interwar), Blackpowder skirmish and Near future/horror games too. Most of our games comprise 3-30 figures tops per side. Hope the move goes well and welcome to our glorious County! ;)

Sounds like a good chance to start with HRE's move, Billy-no-mates!

That's cruel!!
(It may be the truth, but it's still cruel)
Durham is a lovely county. I've lived away but I had to come back.
I just like to play matchmaker, I know how difficult it is moving to a new area and finding like-minded souls.

Good grief. You're moving to Durham. Westfalia Chris has moved to Hull. I didn't realise the NE corner of England had such academic gravitational pull...
Sounds to me like you need to form a LAF exiles club! ;)

Ah the problem isnt that I have no mates, the problem is I have no mates intreasted in my hobby, they would rather go and be DJ's or injest strange mind altering substances...Like stale baked beans or something...

There are a few clubs up there I will have a gander and post some links later

I know mate, it's a common problem, but it does sound like you could be the hub for a little LAF collective over there.
It's ages since I've injected stale baked beans, that takes me back. :o

No sheep here...the chavs ate them all.

We are talking about Middlesbrough so they ate them raw.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Keep the colloquialisms coming. I'm already intimidated by the geordie accents and knowing a few current phrases might help.
@themightyflip - I'm always up for a game. PM me if you would like to get together for a game. The same goes for anyone on LAF
@marrony - Thats good to hear. I was on the Durham club's website and was somewhat disappointed that they emphasize "big battle" games. I'm a skirmish gamer at heart and can't bear to have more than about 40 figures a side.
While were at it. Do you have any advice for a newcomer to England? Anything to do, see, or not do that would not be immediately obvious to someone who has never stepped off of North America?
Thanks,
-Joe

Drive on the right side of the road for a start! :D
-
The best part of this move is that I will not have to drive. :D I was ready to turn in my license when I lived in Pittsburgh.

Learn to like warm beer....?
Nah, we're posh up north, we have those new-fangled re-frig-er-a-tors now.
One good thing about moving to this side of the pond is that you don't have to drink beer that's like sitting in a boat. Close to water.
-
Right if your coming to the north, you should know the differences.
People from Newcastle are geordies
People from Sunderland are Mackams
People from Hartlepool are chimpchokers
And people from Middlesbrough, or the boro, are SMOGGIES!! and proud by the way.
-
TheMightyFlip is entirely correct. Very well put. Now things to see? Hadrian's Wall, Holy Island, Durham Light Infantry Museum, Hancock Museum, the Roman Fort at Shields, Durham Cathedral, Hamsterly Forest, Whitby( close by) Laing art gallery. These places for a start. Sure I've missed loads out! Glad to meet another skirmish gamer too HRE Joseph III . :)

Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough, they had a good exhibition about the 1st world war a while ago.
Things to do..Hmm try fish and chips, avoid hoodies or anyone driving a "hot hatchback" with music louder than an atomic blast pumping out of the speakers.
-
Avoid Middlesbrough town centre on Saturdays.
Unless you have an interest in prehistory and want to see if Neanderthals could walk upright. N.B. the answer is 'almost'.
The town centre on a night anyhow, its quite safe on a day time.
Some good pubs at the top end, Southfield Road for instance.
As for what people are playing, I dont know, I suppose Warhammer is the safe bet as always.
