Title: Kings of War
Post by: mikos khan on 13 January 2022, 03:01:05 AM
Last Friday we did a game of Kings of War at our favorite gaming hangout.  This one was a 2,000 point game pitting a force of Viking raiders against an Ottoman Turk army.  It didn't start out well for the Turks because I let two heavy cavalry units on my right flank get too close to his Huscarls and he charged and routed both of them (in one turn no less!).  All I left on the right flank was a unit of horse archers but they gave sterling service by keeping his Huscarls from interfering with the fight in the center.  My center was held by a mixed force of Janissaries and Azabs supported by a bombard and I was opposed by a huge force of berserkers supported by Huscarls that was determined to destroy my bombard (especially after I hit the berserkers with it on the first turn of the game).  While this was going on I managed to outflank the Vikings on my left with a force of cavalry and cause a fair amount of havoc while the Vikings were advancing on my center.  Eventually the berserkers and Huscarls got into arquebus range and I was able to wear them down but not before losing the bombard.  It was a very close game but I barely managed to eke out a Pyrrhic victory.  Next time I bring more horse archers!  Photos below.

Nice to see Kings of War Historicals on the table... I wish they would bring out an updated version for 3rd Edition.

Looks great. Haven't tried KoW with historics yet, but looks like good fun. Great armies too.

I fielded the Vikings.  I fielded three a unit of archers a unit of skirmisher archers, 4 units of Huscarls and one large unit of Berserkers, also 3 heroes  The standard bearer was a shield maiden named Lagetha.  The general was Ivar the boneless from the rules but looked alot like his father Ragnar.  The third hero also from the rules was the "Berserker of Stamford Bridge.
'  That figure looks al ot lie Kirk Douglas.  The last hero should have been devastating but suffered a few wounds and failed a morale test.  The entire berserker community was embarrassed.  The Turks fielded an antihero assassin.

We have another game of KOW planned for Friday the 14th.  We will post photos.

What a great looking match up. :) I played KoW once, and it seemed to work rather well. It's nice to see that its got a historicals community.

Last Friday we had another installment in the ongoing saga of leadfool's Vikings vs everyone else.  This time his opponent was Vynnie's Holy Roman Empire army.  The game began with a general advance of the Vikings on both flanks while skirmishers held the wooded area in the middle of the field.  The Viking left flank (my command) and the HRE forces opposing me pretty much annihilated each other and left the Viking right to decide the game.  Once again, the large unit of berserkers led the Viking advance into the center of the HRE army and a bloody multi turn melee resulted which the Vikings eventually won.  Although they lost the berserkers and a couple of Huscarl units.  Photos below.

That was a great battle! I’ve been chipping away at my own KOW army so I don’t have to keep mooching off others. Soon…

Printed mats:  definitely add something to the visual appeal of the game in a hurry, with minimal work.   Many are available, and there are even services that will custom print some for you, on cloth or on a thin mouse-pad like material.

Ragnar Lothbrok and Kirk Douglas...... I wonder where those came from?    I'm pretty sure there's a Lagertha out there.    There might even be an Arthurian Merlin ala the Excalibur move floating around out there somewhere.

Lagertha will be appearing in the sequel "Vikings vs Romans" which is currently in pre-production.

Last Friday we had the long awaited confrontation between leadfool's dreaded Viking army and the legions of Rome led by the famed general Johnicus Caesar.  The Romans initially had the advantage and were able to hold the line with their cavalry but the Vikings were finally able to drive off the cavalry off with their archers.  While this was going on the main forces met in the middle of the field and engaged in a multi-turn slugfest which the Vikings eventually won.  It was a fun game.  Photos below.

Hey Mikos khan, great photos but how about a better description of the action than "still more"?

This last Friday we put on two Kings Of War games at the local hangout - a French vs English 100 Years War fight and a Romans vs Huns fight.  The first series of pics depicts the French - English game which the French won.  I was playing in the Hun-Roman game so I couldn't watch the 100 YW game but from what I gather the battle started with an exchange of missile fire which was followed by an advance by both sides that predictably developed into a close range melee that was eventually won by the French.  Photos below.

While the French and English were slugging it out on an adjacent table my Huns were battling the (well painted) legions of Rome commanded by the dreaded Johnicus Burgicus.  The battle opened with a massive cavalry clash between the Hunnic right and the Roman left.  After an initial success by the Roman cavalry I was able to stabilize my right flank and eventually prevail over the Romans.  However, on the left flank the Goth infantry were being roughly handled by the Roman legionnaires and were eventually driven off the field. When the game ended the Romans had only lost about 100 points more than we had so the game was called a draw (or a Pyrrhic victory - take your pick).

That was my first outing with the French. I’ve been working hard to get at least basic color blocking done for my units - I finished skin and am working on metal and then cloth.  I was hoping to be farther along by game day but my hobby attention span is not consistent!

I fielded most of what I have built so far.  I have some more characters and I ordered a couple of cannons. Also Joan of Arc as recommended!

Always good to see well-painted minis.   True, a few needed the finishing touches but all and all well done and a good looking game.   Love the medievals.   Lots of armor and bright colors.

So.......where are the Goths?   I saw absolutely no minis of any pale-as-a-ghost, dark-clothes, heavy-makeup girls out there at all.     The minis that were out there were cool, but you promised me Goths.   Should I say "Beetlejuice" three times to make them appear?

Hey....did you know that puns are the lowest form of Comedy?

Anyhow, great looking game.

Here are some photos of our latest KOW extravaganza - this one was a 4,000 point (per side) game pitting my Ottomans & Leadfools Burgundians against a massive Holy Roman Empire army led by Vynnie & Johnicus plus another player.  While Leadfool, Johnicus & Vynnie engaged in a meatgrinder of a slugfest on the left I was hard pressed by an aggressive attack of heavily armored infantry which I finally managed to blunt by sacrificing most of my infantry.  However, this bought me the time necessary to bring my cavalry into play and rout my opponent.  While this was going on the forces on my left (Leadfool, Johnicus & Vynnie) had virtually annihilated each other but the Holy Roman Empire seemed to have a couple more units left than we did.  As the game ended  (on Turn 7) I was beginning to start my flank attack on the HRE forces but we ran out of time.  Based on the points lost we won (another) pyrrhic victory.

I recently completed a new middle eastern (Saracen) themed army for Kings of War and decided to try it out against Leadfools Poles.  Unfortunately, for my army the result was a complete rout and because I think Leadfool took pity on me he didn't take many photos of the ensuing disaster.  However, there are enough to give you a sense of how it went.  Enjoy.
