Post by: Anpu on 02 October 2009, 08:57:53 PM
M 1d6+2
Dex 5+
Con 8
A 1
w 2
res 6+
Bite CCB 0 Dam +0 Ap 2
Swallow whole (See Scrawny ones)
Swarm Con is halved from attacks with the template or blast special rule.

I have not given any points or anything as I am not sure how much they should be.

the swallow whole is really thematically fitting,

I've got some rules for a Swarm that will be out in the first expansion...I'll post 'em up here and we can see what everyone thinks...mine don't swallow whole and are a weaker model...I'm out for a romantic walk with the wife but once I get home I'll get on it!

Swarm
Cost: 1BP
M 5, Dex. 6+, Con. 4, A 2, W 1, Res. 5+, Skills: none
Weapons: Bite (C.C.B. 0, Dam. D+1)
Special: Beast(s)
Tiny: A swarm is a large mass made up of smaller creatures and as such suffers no modifiers to Movement due to terrain. In addition the swarm recieves a 6+ cover save against all Shooting attacks.
Queen (+2BP): Head of the colony or just the biggest of it's kind, a swarm with the queen upgrade gains the Command skill but can only 'nominate' other swarms. Any number of swarms may be upgraded to queen status.

...let me know what you guys think...

To be honest - I like the Anpu rules more, because more randomnes and more danger

Just my few cents  ;)

I can see a use for both, but my version was inspired by the Mummy movie and therefore I wanted it to be quite dangerous and just one or two on the board to accompany a Mummy or two.
I like Mike's swarm as well since it covers a totaly different kind of swarm, not as dangerous perhaps but definately something you could have quite a few of  =)

Hey Anpu,

I am writing up a *TOP SECRET* expansion for S.A. entitled "Deep Places"...basically an underground version of the game with tiles and various Gauntlet/SpaceHulk/Decent kind of ideas...but more on that later...I like your swarm quite a bit and may do an egyptian themed mission including the 'Scarab Swarm' (basically your rules...if I can use 'em?) and some sort of ubermummy. Will playtest those 'Scarab Swarms' of yours tonite in a regular game. Will points cost them around 4-6 BP...more when I've seen the destructive potential!  :D

Sure! I would love it if you find them useful. I am also thinking about rules for a "greater mummy" or something like that for a egyptian tomb scenario using Hirst arts molds for the terrain tiles, no concrete rules yet though just a bunch of ideas knocking about. I am looking forward to hearing about what you think about the swarms in play. I have as of yet not had a chance to play S.A myself. (Makes it a bit hard to balance points costs etc.)

The game last night was fantastic! Love the scarab swarms...better rules than mine. Anpu, please PM me with your 'real' name and you will get a writing credit on the expansion in which they appear.

The first 'Deep Places' setting will be 'The Black Pyramid', a series of 5 games to recover some ancient egyptian/Babilonian magical artifact...any Ideas? Anyone?

Also, started rules for the Ancient Prince (ubermummy) and his Ancient Warriors!  Ancient spirits of evil!!! ;D

With any luck 'The Black Pyramid' will be released around X-mas as a freebee on the website... :-X

How about they have to retrieve a chest containing the sundisk of the Aten an artifact that gave power to the heretic pharao Akenaten before the mumified Ancient prince gets his hands on it and is restored to his full power. There can be a lot of variations on this theme. A lot of nice egyptian small scenery and treasures can be found trough Crocodile games webshop. or if you prefer canopic jars and things like that. There could be different things for each scenario. I'll see what more I can come up with...

Expanding on the scenario ... especially if the good guys lose.  ;)

If Akenaten recovers the sundisk he has to take it to a second location (the top of a pyramid, a temple in a hidden oasis, etc) where once re-united with the "socket" (thinking that the sundisk must have been mounted at some point) if he bathes in the dawn light shining through/reflecting off the sundisk on a *special day* (which of course is in less than 5 days  ::)) he gets his full powers back.

So, let's say this sundisk ia a 'special item' only one per campain...what does it do? Game wise? Extra wounds? Some sort of save against somthing...?

Love the idea of the baddies being able to use it as well... >:D

I think just carrying the sundisc should give you a bonus on your save and immunity resolve tests due to psychology.  While actually completing the ritual to embue you with the power of Aten should perhaps be a bit more. Like causing fear or terror to enemy models wether they be immune to psychology or not. The ability to cast the spell Sinister energies in the form of a ray of sunlight from the disc is another fitting power.
If the Ancient prince completes the ritual, the final scenario could be a desperate try to call to the other ancient gods of Egypt for help to banish the creature back into the underworld. The brave treshold agents trying to hold of the undead until they can complete the ritual.

The Scarab Swarms are 4BP in the underground setting...I would think that is reasonable in a standard game...let me know what you guys think.

I've got a handful of my second skull scarab bases left - these only have four bugs on them (not five like the first castings), but they might be useful:

If you interested in large size creatures to use in a swarm, then this UK Company sells them.

Do you think the swarm rules would also work for larger creatures such as pack of savage, feral dogs? I'm still waiting for my rulebook to arrive but I always like to plan ahead  ;)

Not long after I got the book I had an idea for scenery set up.
My idea was a set of standing stones with a Sacrificial alter in the middle and a path leading to a burial mound the type you find in the Orkney island north of Scotland, it could be around 16’’ in diameter you left the top of to play inside, then you would find a hidden passage to a lower level for this you would use floor maps.
But the rules are not really made for this type of game, so ill be looking forward to see what you come up with for corridor type play.
Plus I fancy a chief inspector and British Bobbies to play the part of the Threshold for this type of story line, or even Victorian bobbies.

The prepainted Rot Scarab Swarms from Wotc work quite well.  Cheap too.
