Title: Armoured cars in East Africa
Post by: Poiter50 on October 03, 2009, 05:35:05 AM
Guys & gals,

In March to tanga, armoured cars receive a mention or two and my mind strayed to what type of A/C was used in this theatre? I know the RR A/C was used in LAMBs in the Palestine campaign as well as various tenders and MG equipped trucks/lorries, so did the RR appear in Africa or was it a local lash up or something else?

In advance, thanks for your help.

There was a squadron of Rollers in German East - don't think they achieved much, but they inspired a fun but silly Wilbur Smith novel, "Cry Wolf", about the Italian invasion of Abyssinia!

What I recall from my A/C books (not here with me in the moment, mind you) the "standard" RR Armoured Car Pattern was used; some later had the turret roof plates removed to aid ventilation. Apart from the dedicated armoured cars, there were also RR tenders, i.e. light trucks on the same chassis as the A/Cs. There are some interesting images; unfortunately, all my applicable reference books are in Germany right now and I won´t be able to access them until christmas.

There was no. 1 (Willoughby's) Armoured Motor battery using 4 armoured leyland lorries active in 1916. Another unit was No 1 squadron RNACD using Rolls Royces in support of the South African troops of general Botha in Namibia, Togoland and the Cameroons

Does anyone know which manufacturer produce models of correct armoured cars for East Africa ?
Did they participate in battles ?
