Title: Golgotha's I haven't got a clue - challenge
Post by: Golgotha on March 06, 2022, 10:46:29 PM
So we are all familiar with Cluedo - ever thought of converting it into a "proper" miniatures game?

Well, that is the challenge. Come up with an interesting take on Cluedo and turn it into a miniatures game. Be as creative as you like. Different miniatures, ditch the rooms for buildings anything goes...

Also, feel free to post any painted Cluedo miniatures.

What got me thinking along these lines was painting these:

Pulp Alley has the 11th Guest Scenario, which is very much like Cluedo.

I have a board for gaming interiors, based on the Cluedo board. The games played on it have not been based on Cluedo though. Interested to see what people come up with here.

The board...

Waaay back in the day, while still a schoolboy, we were
allowed at the end of term to bring in board games.
Some lessons were continuing & on one fateful day
we were only supposed to have one 'free' period, so
I brought in Cluedo. Do to several unexpected events
we ended up with the whole day 'free'. Of course
no-one else had brought in a game, & after about seven
games we lost our interest. As it was then lunch Stephen
O'Leary (my first wargaming opponent) said, 'Leave it
with me lads'   'I'll come up with a variant'.
After lunch we came back to play...'Assassination'
Each player had to write down:-
Who they were to bump off,
Which room &
with what weapon.
Lots of chasing people down corridors, subtle movement
of weapons added to double bluffs over 'favourite' room
and victim. Much hilarity until the denouement.

Worth considering ?
By the way if Oscar (Stephen O'Leary) is reading this,
get in touch with me (Whiggy).

Cheers Aircav - now that you mention it the Pulp Alley11th Guest Scenario was Cluedo like - well remembered.

Mad Lord Snapcase that is a fantastic set up - so many possibilities - also be good for a house clearing type game with SWAT or terrorists or some such...

Has Been that sounds cracking - like to give that idea a try certainly makes Cluedo more interesting.

I do think a Cluedo-inspired game could potentially be a good way to recruit people to wargaming.

Hope to see more ideas...

Frothers ran a Cluedo game at Salute many years ago... maybe ask Dags, as he might have some photos?

Board games often turn up at Charity shops,
car boot sales & sites such as Gumtree &
Freecycle, so should be possible to pick up
a board, maybe with a full set of figures.
In fact the possibility of several boards 'in
play' (with an Umpire's copy being the only
one with all players on view) does interest. ::)

Cheers Has Been. Multiple boards could be great and that opens possibilities for hidden movement etc. and maybe a creepy feel - as though being in a house with a murderer isn't creepy enough  lol

Thanks Akula - messaged Dags and he had this to say:

"No photos I'm afraid - it was 12 years ago and they were probably lost in The Great Photobucket Outage.

The game was a mash up of Cluedo and Cthulu.... imagine Cluedo with wandering monsters. The board was made by Ian at Fenris - he laser-cut the rooms and lots of different people each built one.....  it hadn't been assembled until the day of Salute. As you can imagine there was a fair amount of stress about a) whether all the rooms would arrive and b) would they actually fit together. Luckily on both counts they did.

We used the original design of Cluedo board, rather than the production version, which had the additional Gunroom as we had lots of volunteers. The plans for it are available on line."

I spent some time thinking about a "Detective" based "wargame" for sometime.

The idea was that the player(s) would select a primary detective archetype:
•   Interrogator (Colombo),
•   Deductive (Holmes),
•   Loose Cannon (Dirty Harry),
•   Hard Boiled (Sam Spade),
•   Street Smart(Shaft)

You then draw a card from a small deck of 12 that would give you a small group of cases.  These would then provide a list of potential "Clues" or "Plot Points".  The cases could be something like:

•   Mr. X is Murdered
•   Kidnapping
•   Robbery
•   Assault

During a game, players go to various “Investigations” and determine if there are clues there.  Investigation points take the form of random events such as:

•   Interrogate a suspect- Brains vs Cool Test
•   Find a witness- Brains vs Brains test
•   Find evidence- Brains vs TN
•   Thugs- Combat
•   Interpret the Clue- Brains vs TN

Each Investigation point will have a challenge that requires the Detective to roll an ability test.  If passed, they gain a benefit, but if failed it causes a complication to the investigation.  Complications could be Thugs attack, suspects flee, witnesses clam up, etc.  Benefits are earning “Clues”.  Clues can be used to solve the case, get upgrades etc.

Once a detective has X amount of clues it triggers the “Case Closed” Scenario that varies by criminal investigation.

There would also be a tension raising metric called "Heat" that accumulates when detectives:

-   Failing a test
-   Running
-   Combat in Line of Sight of Bystanders
-   Harassing Bystanders
-   Hero Models going OOA

If Heat gets to a certain level, the game ends.  Therefore, detectives need to collect and complete the case before the the Heat gets too high.

The game never got beyond the brainstorming session..... for now.

I do like the sounds of those game ideas Easy E - please do try turning them into a game. Given your prolific game design, I am confident you could put something excellent together. Do like the mechanics of Plot points and Heat getting too hot.

Herewith, some miniatures which are available from an eBay store called Forlornhopegames from which I have always had excellent service. See:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/forlornhopegames?_trksid=p2047675.m3561.l2559

These are clearly Cluedoesque in style, note these pictures are from Forlornhopegames and were not painted by me  :( , these would be ideal for a number of games especially anything pulp related:

I am keen to see any other suitable alternatives, miniatures-wise and perhaps anything you may have painted with a Cluedo-like theme.

Thank you Aircav and Elk those cards and games are great. Pulp Alley mechanics wise may well be the way to go.

Herewith, yet more Cluedo Miniatures. These are readily available for cheap on the likes of eBay. So I painted them up to go with the last batch.

These are what they look like unpainted, I managed to get 10 miniatures for less than 4 pounds. Generally, I tried to match the colours of the originals.

This one is ideal for colonial games like Congo - even to have offboard as the commander back at HQ.

Thank you Sunjester these pictures may give some sense of size the first next to a Perry War of the Roses miniature and the second on top of a Tamiya paint pot. Do not use my hand as an indicator as I am a giant at 6 foot 4 who wears size 13 shoes...  lol

They look like they're in the 28-32mm range there, close to 28 judging by the WoR mini. Slightly thicker bases on them combined with them standing straight while the WoR has his legs spread out
