Title: Looking for help from a German speaker - Silver Bayonet related
Post by: Doug ex-em4 on March 21, 2022, 10:12:42 AM
I want the name of my Austrian unit to be in correct (korrekt? :)) German. I envisage the units as freelance, ad hoc entities. They are recruited and named by the officer and only loosely controlled by a secret committee of the hofkriegsrat.

My officer, Colonel Graf von Strepsil has a somewhat florid turn of phrase and has decided to call his unit "The Righteous Hunters of the Kaiser and King"

The last part would, I assume, be abbreviated to k.u.k. or k.und k. ? So I would appreciate it if a German speaker could tell me how to render the whole name in German. I particularly want it to be clear that these Righteous Hunters are operating on behalf of the k.u.k. In English, that name could equally be read to mean that the k.u.k. was the target of their hunting which I certainly don’t want. :o

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Doug

First off, IIRC, K.u.k was only used from 1867 onwards. Prior to that, it would have been kaiserlich-koeniglich (abbreviated to k.-k.), if I am not mistaken.

Therefore, I would suggest (since SB is set in the Napoleonic era, AFAIK),

Seiner kaiserlich-königlichen (k.-k.) apostolischen Majestät Rechtschaffenes (Leib-)Jägerkorps

His imperial-royal apostolic Majesty's (own) righteous corps of hunters.

That sounds tremendous - just the sort of thing I’m looking for. How would that be accurately abbreviated (for those occasions when the full title would not be appropriate or convenient)?

Thanks for your help :)

This is before German orthography was strictly formalised, so I guess it could be what you'd want.

You might just use "Kaiserjägerkorps", since that was only used for proper regiments from 1895 onwards. Maybe Leibjägerkorps. Korps being optional.

Alternatively, as follows:

S. k.-k.-ap.M. Rs.Jg.-Korps

Alternative spelling for Korps: Corps. Happy to stand corrected by those more familiar with proper austroimperial nomenclature and language peculiarities, I might just have heaped a bunch of Piefkenisms on top of each other.  ;)

Plenty to work with there - thanks.

I’m afraid that "Piefkenisms" defeated Google Translate. It identified the word as Latvian, which is interesting but couldn’t manage an English trnslation :( Cool word, though…. :)

"Piefke" being a mild Austrian ethnophaulism for Germans in general and Prussians in particular, I made it up to denote terms an austro-appropriating Prussian Schweinhund like me would think sound Austrian but in reality aren't.  lol

Küss die Haand, Herr Zinnbaron a.D.  ;)

Now that is a really classy and stylish name for your unit! Definitely oojah-cum-spiff!

Yeah - I was quite taken with that. To misquote Disraeli, I could be quite inebriated by the verbosity of it….. :)

From another Prussian Piefke‘s humble p. o. v. Chris‘ suggestion sounds fabuluous!

It would be madness to ignore the Piefke posse so Seiner kaiserlich-königlichen (k.-k.) apostolischen Majestät Rechtschaffenes (Leib-)Jägerkorps it shall be :D

Indeed. And in the interests of achieving maximum length, perhaps we should restore the missing "s" to sesquipedalian?

Blast that typo. Of course, autocorrection missed that one. o_o

Nevertheless, I must concede the high ground to you. I only knew how to spell it because I had to Google it to find out what it meant :D
