I began a new project, skirmish fights & adventures during the French Revolution. I hope that it looks like swashbuckling adventures rather than Napoleonic ones.
The first figures are from the 109e Regiment de Ligne (formally Royal Regiment de Martinique-Guadeloupe).

Nice start :)

Nicely done! I am working on a similar project using the Eureka figures. I just finished basing and adding flags to my first units (20 French and 24 "German" Austrians) over the weekend. I'm about half-way through 20 more French in the ragged uniforms right now.
-
Lovely
I'm always planning to do some French royalists. I'm a great fan of Mirabeau Tonneau. If you use ' God, the king, wine and women ' on your flags you're doing alright.
-
Plenty of opportunity for set piece skirmishes, rescues etc involvong the Scarlet Pimpernel and his cohorts I would think 8) 8)
-
Quite well done. These are some wonderful miniatures and sounds to be smashing fun.
My question though is a slightly off topic, could you please tell me what the game mats are that these miniatures are placed on?
Thank-you,
-
it's an old (very old ) Faller mat (0,70 m x 1,00 m) that I use only for taking photographs.
-
Once again I am truly inspired. The unit is fantastic and has revived my old ambition of recruiting a small Demi-Brigade from the Army of the Orient to invade India. I have a large collection of Redoubt's "Wellington in India" Range. I have always wanted to add a small French Unit to the native Princes for "stiffening" to take on the British. But alas, I have never been able to find French Revolution figures that are in scale with these. I am very fond of the Redoubt Figures, I think they are the best wargame figures ever ( and I have many) Can anybody steer me in the right direction to find suitable miniatures. I do have many of the Alternate Armies Elves for French Officers, but units of them just look too cartoonish when compared to the Redoubts. I have added some of the Reaper Scottish Highlanders that they had years ago as a Renegade Officer, but that is only one or two figures. Can anyone help?
-
Not my period but now I am curious.
We have the English/Aristo hero in the the Scarlet Pimpernel but are there any works where the Revolutionary side gets their day in the sun? In English? French (which I don't read) perhaps? Other?
Gracias,
Glenn

Tres joli Olivier :)
And definitely swashbuckling adventures, not boring old Napoleonics! ;)
I've often thought about gaming the adventures of The Scarlet Pimpernel, so I'll be following your progress with great enthusiasm!
En avant!

But in the LAF world Nappies *are* Swashbuckling, correct? (I've asked this elsewhere but so far everyone has been ignoring me in cruel, sophisticated way. :'( )

I don't imagine anybody is ignoring you, Hammers. I suspect nobody knows the answer. Whoever set up this part of the forum must have thought of pirates and three musketeers as being the core of the topic. And virtually all of the threads feature skirmish level or role playing level games. Over here on the Pacific coast of North America the term "Napoleonics" normally refers to massive battles using 6mm, 10mm, or 15mm figures with the basic maneuver units being battalions, regiments, or brigades. There's thousands of figures on the table sometimes. I don't think most people on LAF are interested in that kind of thing, and there's no specific part of the forum devoted to that level of mass battle for any period.
There has been some interest in 28mm skirmish level games using Sharpe Practice for the types of small unit clashes in the Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell. That falls within the swashbuckling topic on LAF, at least from my point of view.
-

No worry, I meant that jokingly. It is more of a practical, moderator issue to me since I privately don't do Napoleonics at all. I'd like to know so I know where I can dump a post I don't want in Workbench (*he says, pinching his nose and holding the offending post between the tips of his thumb and index finger*).

I painted some minis from foundry as chasseurs of the 19e regiment in 1793. The regiment was part of the Army of the coasts of La Rochelle and was involved during the civil war in Vendée.

These Chasseurs are under command of 2nd Lieutenant Follot. I found an interesting story about 'him'.
The Maréchal des Logis (sergeant) Jean Baptiste Follot was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on june 10th, 1793. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on the battlefield after a brave behaviour during the Vendée campaign. On 1795, while the 1st squadron of the regiment was in Trier (germany) a report indicated that the Lieutenant Follot of 2nd company, 1st squadron was in fact a woman. She was later in Koblenz then wounded in Modena (Italy) in june 1800.

Really nice looking unit of Chasseurs, great looking Vendee types too 8)
-
Great paint job and fascinating story. You have to wonder how many women snuck into the ranks. It seems ridiculous on the face of it, but when you consider how bulky the clothes were and how many layers they wore compared to modern dress it becomes much more plausible.
-
Great work. I hope to see more soon. Your project is very inspiring.

I painted a unit of the french National Guard in 1793.

Specially to Leapsnbou
why don't try with the Elite napoleonics. They have french for the Egyptian campaign and for the Revolutionary Wars/campaings of Napoleon in Italy.

Aweome Vendéens fighters! Vive la roi!

They will be perfect but I must confess that I don't really like the sculpt (the neck / collar is a bit odd).

They are very few range available for Vendéens & chouans minis in 28mm not to say none! Foundry have some figures (but more 25mm than 28mm) and Alain Touller (a french sculptor) have a 25mm range (I hope to get some).
So If somebody wants to start a 28mm range of Vendéens-Chouans, just let me know , I have a lot of pics! :D

You may want to contact Eureka. They are already making some beautiful French and Austrians and just released Tyrolean fighters.
If you can get some of the Alain Touller figures I would love to see a picture or two. I have heard of them but they seem to be as elusive as the Grail!

The Eureka french infantry in ragged uniforms are really tempting.
They seek them here, they seek them there
Those frenchies seek them everywhere.
Are they in heaven? are they in hell?
those damned elusive Alain Touller minis.
Fortunately, I received a batch of his Vendéens minis on Monday. They are pretty and a little taller than Foundry's mob.
-
very nice ;D
très sympa Olivier.
*mort aux chouans! Vive la République!*

I painted Crusaders minis as french Hussards de la Mort.
This unit was created in june 1792 and fought at Valmy. In 1793 along with the Hussards de l’Egalité, they formed the 14th regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval. They fought during the civil war in Vendée in the Westermann Legion using the same uniform (inspired by the Prussian Totenkopf Husaren).

Very nice 8)
Hussars in mirlitons always put me in mind if The Duellists, great film; but I also have a vague memory as a little kid seeing a regular story in The Eagle comic about rivalries between 2 chaps in different French Hussar regiments, and I'm sure one of them was this one.
-
Really nice.
I love the Hussars… and the other units.
Will this French Revolution collection became as big as your WWII collection? ;)
-
I painted some Vendéen infantrymen from Alain Touller's 25mm range. Nevertheless, they are taller than Wargames Foundry's French Revolution mob (true 25mm) and a little smaller than Perry Miniatures's AWI range.
The range has also some Vendean generals like Charrette, La Rochejaquelein, Talmont, Lescure, Cathelineau and Bonchamps.

On this picture, Lescure is the officer on the left, Talmont is the one on the right.

Here's a scratchbuilt windmill that I will use for my French Revolution project in Vendée.
http://perrysheroes.free.fr/spip.php?article257
(http://perrysheroes.free.fr/IMG/jpg/Windmill1_Rest.jpg)
There are some pictures explaining the way the Vendéens used them as a communication system during the civil war.

Love obscure periods. I would have used your windmill signals to say so but sadly no windmills and someone forget to give me the code book. lol
-
Many thanks for posting those Sgt Perry! The Touller figures look great, especially with your excellent paint jobs on them.

Fantastic. I see I will have to save up for some of M. Touller's fine Vendeens. I just started work on some of Eureka's chasseurs a cheval myself. If only we weren't seperated by that pesky Atlantic!

What would be the french revolution without the guillotine? Unforgiving, it was the doom of many royalists as well as republicans.

first, I wish to play some skirmishes with a modification to LotOW that I wrote but I think that I can play some larger games with Black Powder rules now. But this means : more figures to paint!

I painted some Victrix french line infantry (1804-1807) as volunteers during the french Revolution in 1793. These battalions were engaged on the east front and in Vendée. In 1794, two battalions of volunteers were gathered with one battalion of line infantry in order to create a Demi-Brigade.

First they are far taller than the old foundry. I had to base tham on 1mm round base only for they already have a small plastic base (and it would have been too much with wy Renaissance Ink thick bases).
And yes, it's bit boring. You have to carefully cut the arms and weapons away from the sprues (reading the letters to avoid a mismatch). By the way it takes time to painted them, a lot of small details on the backpack, canteen, etc. It's OK for 20 or 40 figures and I can't imagine painting a whole army of Victrix.
Olivier

Well done again Sgt Perry and thanks for the information on the Victrix. I was thinking of getting some myself to add some more variety to my forces.
I know you are concentrating on the Vendee, but you might be interested to know that Eureka are preparing to release Austrian artillery and Chevauxlegers: http://eurekamin.com.au/news.php?newsid=EkyVyZkyVFINbmUJWD (http://eurekamin.com.au/news.php?newsid=EkyVyZkyVFINbmUJWD) .

Thought the regiment was created during the french revolution, the trumpeter wore a french style uniform (instead of a hussar one) like in the former royal hussars regiments.

That's a great collection you're building up here Olivier. I enjoy going through this thread from the beginning just to see what all you've accomplished since you started the project!
