Title: Montrose: First Blood(s) [Jan '23 update]
Post by: abu iskander on May 11, 2022, 06:30:32 PM
Been at this project for awhile, but have been taking a different approach than usual. Like an old Hollywood epic, I've got a friend providing most of the cast of 1000s (i.e., painting many of the rank and file) and I'm focused on the main characters, scenography and props.

What good timing to have had my efforts align with Bloody Miniatures recent releases. Here's my first from that range, with some head and hat swaps to provide more 'cowbell' for the Montrose campaign.

These Bicorne are also lovely sculpts, and will be used as the command base for one of my Irish regiments.

I'll be making use of a number of tabletop markers for status, etc., as well. This is a 'Humiliation' marker, used when a stronger unit loses to a weaker in melee.

Similarly, these are a series of 'Lost Squadron' markers.

Here are the MacDonalds... (used a couple WL box sets)

And WL's Macolla (more of him later):

Lastly, getting some scenics elements together for the table as well. I'll be mostly using models from Jens' War of the Roses range, and this is a small chapel.

Much more to follow!

Well, brilliant  :-*
Love what you've done with the Bloody Miniatures - that was fast work 8)

I'm contemplating doing a release of Bloody Scots - basically taking 16 of the existing range, and getting Nick to convert / adapt them with new heads in assorted bonnets, plus border plaids / cloaks, and some distinctive Scottish weapons like Jedburgh staves, Lochaber axes, etc.
Just need to try to figure out if they'd sell well enough to justify the investment in the sculpting work, production of new moulds etc.
But it is very tempting...  ::)

Wow :o ! Those are stunning - lovely paint work and great dioramas created. It’s such a colourful and interesting part of the wars. Can’t wait to see more of the collection. The massed ranks of MacDonalds look especially good 👍.

@Richard, I would certainly be tempted by some Bloody Scots. It seems a popular part of the period to me. Would be lovely to have some more gentrified highlanders in trews, and some real humblies with nothing but stones to throw. More beards, as well  :D.  Alba gu brath!

Lovely work. Great painting and great use of figures. I really like the brownish tinge you've given the stone of the chapel - bang on, imho, for some stone buildings you find in parts of Scotland.

Fantastic work all round , suitably muted colours and groundwork which is redolent of moorland. Really well done!

Bloody Miniatures Scots. Count me in Richard. Ideal for skirmish and big skirmish settings throughout the Three Kingdoms.

Thank you all very kindly, gentlemen.

First off, I too would buy Bloody Montrose. As much as I've enjoyed the conversions, I'd love to see some of these guys in trews and kilts, etc. I'll be using Bloody exclusively for my forlorn hope elements, and have already done much of the conversion work upon what I have on hand, but count me in for the full series if you do go down that path, Richard. This range is amongst my favorites and I'll continue to support it.

Kerry -- Thanks and the Jens range is from here -- https://www.3dprintterrain.de (https://www.3dprintterrain.de)

And thanks to all of you who complimented the terrain and palette - I'm really trying to get the atmospherics dialed in!

A couple new additions....

Another Irish captain.

More hot Presbo action, though in need of a saltire.

Needed something for the cavalry to mark lost squadrons, so did a little greenstuff work and converted a WL plastic horse.

And here he is painted up.

Brilliant work with the sculpting.  :-*

I must admit to double taking, having thought the dead horse had an extra leg!  :o

Thanks, Furt! Extra leg?? No idea what you're talking about...  lol

Here are the Captain's bases, assembled for each respective force. Still a few more of these to do, but for now all the regiments I've fielded have a commander. I'm now moving on to more of my Bloody conversions which will be the basis of my Forlorn Hope groups.

The Covenanters (saltires are placeholders as I await some more of the excellent Flags of War banners)

Montrose's force

And a regiment of militia staged with their boss man.

Also, to give a sense of more of the rank and file, this is the frame gun battery. These were painted by my friend Rex, tho staged and based, etc. by myself.

Many thanks, all.  Been doing a bit of traveling, so just a small addition here.  I'm planning to field two 12 figure Forlorn Hope elements.  Here is the first batch for the Covenanters.  Some hat swaps, which entailed carelly removing the top of the heads to add bonnets and resculpt the hair as needed, then green stuffed some tartan on the other.  Eight more to go for these guys!

Thank you, all!  Grouped up the output of my last few sessions here. More lovely figures from the Captain, with some minor conversions here and there... the sinister Presbyterian was such good fun to take a brush to. Anyway, three of these guys left to go and I'll begin work on the Forlorn for the Montrose side.

They look great, though I always preferred the French term (for Forlorn Hope)
i.e. L'Enfant Perdu (Lost Children). Apologies if my French is incorrect. :)

Many thanks, gentlemen.

Curassier - In an effort to give this project a certain grand manner atmosphere, I've gone with 4 stands (~4x3) with 2 similar bases of pike as the basis for my foote elements. (I should note that all these figures were painted for me by my friend Rex)

Some in-progress Irish

And some Covenanter militia.

Thank you all most kindly, gentlemen.

Here's my next batch of les infants perdus for the Montrose side. And a shot of the crew so far. Five more to go...  Kerry - I've loosely sourced most or all of the tartans depicted. I've been reading Buchan's bio of Montrose and have used as references the place names where stopped after his initial landing with Black Pate on their recruiting drive. Or have internet searched "MacDonald 17th century tartan" or something similar. The big belted plaid is one of those, or close as I could paint it anyway...

Have had this project simmering along, though mostly on the back burner. That, said I received The Captain's latest Bloody releases and am looking forward to adding many of them to my forces; have a number in mind to add to my Forlorns and some character vignettes. Like below.  I've continued my collaboration with my friend Rex and since my last update, he's delivered the rest of the Irish and militia for Montrose's side. So as I now have both forces present at Tippermuir, I'll mostly be adding bits and pieces - status tokens, characters, etc. off and on as games demand.

And a few shots of the troops in action. As I've mentioned before, we modified Very Civile Actions and have been very pleased with the games it's delivered.

They look absolutely stunning! The conversions from Bicornes are very effective.

Amazing work and your joint work fits together beautifully.
Can you explain how you use the colonel's bases - you have some with three figures and a flag.
Do they go with specific units ?
Just wonderful.

Thanks all, for the kind words.

Cuirassier - Happy to explain, please forgive the length of the answer. Got on a bit of a roll once I started writing as I've become in the habit of explaining this all to the players I've introduced to the game here.  In the Very Civile Actions rules set we're using, each unit consists of two elements: the troops and the commander - and each unit is assigned a named commander with 'characteristics'. In my case, having built to the forces present at Tippermuir, I consulted this https://madeinperth.org/battle-of-tippermuir-1-september-1644/ (https://madeinperth.org/battle-of-tippermuir-1-september-1644/) and Buchan's biography of Montrose (great read by the way!) to determine what those characteristics were that seem to have likely been for the historical commander and 2IC of each battalia.

I made markers for each of these and added them to the ones that were already included. In fact, you'll notice in the second to last picture on this page that there is one of those small Colonel markers on top of the unit card to the rear of Tullibardine's regiment with "Cw'. This designates that he's considered a coward and it affects the behavior of the unit. If he's killed, which can happen often enough, the player randomly draws a replacement from the pile.

The colonel's base is matched to a specific unit as well. The base on this page I've matched to the Badenoch militia - shown in progress after the Irish regiments.  They were hastily assembled from the local area and weren't too excited to be there. Hence, the figures themselves are a mish-mash of excess scraggy looking Irish and a couple sets of WL's Clubmen.  There are also a few odds and ends for additional character - like the cuirassier on the distant flank firing from behind the cover of a rock throwing youngster. In this case, I couldn't source a flag for the regiment so went with something generally atmospheric. The figures on the other hand, all from the Captain's range, were intended to give a sense of what kind of unit this was said to have been.  The other regiments are a bit more regular, so in most cases I've been able to match a set of regimental standards from either GMB or Flags of War that more closely match the troops and the colonel's base. Not sure if any of the pics show that very clearly, but that's the general scheme.

The colonel's base also functions as an activation marker for the unit - it's placed to the front of the troops prior to activation and then moved to the rear of the troops afterwards.  VCA has number of opportunities to model scenic elements that take the place of counters from a book keeping perspective so you'll also see markers casualty and terror (like TFL shock) status (one yellow or red tuft per pip acquired), humiliation, taken prisoner, etc. Thought this would be a great way to elevate the atmospherics on the table top.

Anyway, hope that's not too TLDR, but we rolled our sleeves up developing our fairly subtle modifications, so we put a fair amount of thought into the project from top to bottom ;)

Beautiful, beautiful work!  I am in awe of the plaids :o.  The action pictures most recently posted are brilliant.

I have been interested in this campaign since I first read Maurice Walsh's novel And No Quarter many years ago.

Lovely additions to your collection. :-*
Great mix of figures from different companies.
Wonderful to see Bloody Miniatures in the mix.
Love the Captain's figures.
His Scots are a very nice addition.
I wonder how well his Scots packs are selling?
I have some, (need to paint them).
Thanks for sharing your photos.

Great ideas and thanks for the lengthy explanation.
Are these rules still available. I think they are by the same enthusiasts that did red Actions for the Russian Civil War ?

They’ve done okay Randy :)

Not quite as popular as the preceding releases of figures, but given that TYW/ECW era Scots are more of a niche interest, they haven’t done too badly.

Thanks again gentlemen.  Cuirassier - here’s a link to all the Perfect Captain games, at least as far as I know, kept on a DropBox by someone on their FB group. The PC site no longer has live links, but there is a decent amount of activity on FB  there if you’re so inclined.
