Title: Looking for late Victorian British infantry officers
Post by: Red Orc on 08 October 2009, 10:52:34 AM
I really know nothing about proper historical gaming, sorry, but I wonder if your collected geniuses could help me out.

I'm looking for a mini that I can use as Edmund Blackadder's uncle (also called Edmund) round about 1889 - I reckon he was probably a lieutenant and quite young (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/redorc01/images-1-1.jpg) - this is Edmund (the nephew) during WWI ("Blackadder Goes Forth" of course), so a mini that's younger, and further back in time, but somewhat resembles the Edmund we see above...

And a mini for Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett, as a captain aged about 29 - this shot is again a WWI thing when he's about 60 and made general,
(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/redorc01/images-1.jpg)
so any suggestions for a 'young Melchett' gratefully received, thanks!

Hi, check out Ironclad Miniatures, in their VSF British range they do a Line Infantry officer in home service dress, and a Guards officer with moustache that would make a good young Melchett.
Sorry I don't know how to post links, but just google the name and you'll find the site.
Hope this helps.

Have you had a look through the Foundry Darkest Africa and colonial stuff?
This especially brings to mind the chap in the sun helmet with tea-cup and saucer  :D

Finding Bladders and young Melchett is the easy part. It is finding the vicious natives wielding sharpened guava halves that will present difficultied.  :D

Indeed. Luckily I'm not planning on re-fighting M'Boto Gorge, what I have in mind is much more sinister and VSF, involving airships, adventurous heroines, lost worlds and other such airy-fairy shenanigans.

But I was very taken with the idea of having an incompetent young Captain Melchett, and the rest just seemed to logically follow. I'm going to have to come up with an alter ego for Baldrick now. Possibly Pvt. Thomas, known as Herbert, Baldrick, 1860, Shoreditch... sorry, 1860, born; ditch.

Thanks for the suggestions, Ironclad do indeed look very good, one of their officers (I forget which one to be honest) does look quite like Melchie. I might be able to paint him 'young'... could give it a go anyway. Must take a look at Foundry, pith helmet, teacup and saucer sounds jolly spiffing, what?

A great idea.

Ironclad a good suggestion.

Alternatives could be Redoubt Enterprises Home service Britsh infantry - there are several officers to look at there.

Empress Miniatures Zulu Wars have some beautiful figures, lots of character in them, the uniform is obviously earlier and colonial.

A while ago, on a "what is on your wishlist" thread I suggested that some one do a head sprue of Blackadder and baldrics so that we can put them in any time period. Just waiting on a talented sculptor to act on it.  ;)

...the uniform is obviously earlier and colonial.

Mismatched unforms (home as opposed to colonial, line infantry or light infantry, or whatever) and relative lateness or earliness doesnt bother me much - as they'll likely be up against dinosaurs, martians, steam powered battlesuits, flying ships and pirates with energy weapons, the number of buttons and the piping on the cuffs aren't all that important!

Obviously even I can tell the difference between 'Napoleonic Wars' and 'Boer Wars', but anything from about 1870s onwards (Zulu Wars maybe?) is fair game I reckon, and as these troops are a hastily-cobbled together force to deal with a sudden emergency, I'm not that bothered if I justify them by saying "these lot were sent direct from Colchester, while these chaps were hurredly brought back from the Cape Province, which is why some are in home and some colonial service uniforms".

Thanks for all the suggestions. That Foundry pack does look great. "Featherstonehaugh" (Fanshaw, I presume?) looks likely too. But I'm certain "Invergordon" is a guy that used to be on Scrapheap Challenge a lot. He was a Major though, so anything is possible I guess.
