BT = Building Thread, and not a lettuce-deficient meal/snack.
I have a major problem, which I whine about consistently: storage space.
So my 'built conveyance' (we'll call that a BC, just to keep things messy) will not take the immensity prize.
I'll admit I was toying with 145mm diameter wheels yesterday evening, but the beastie sporting these would've been too big to stash away until the blessed age of 78 when I might just have time to dig up all my models and do some gaming.
I will probably be (a) reducing the number of wheels (no give-away there, I had a 10-14 wheeler in mind originally) (b) reducing (regretfully) the diameter.
I can safely guess the BC, being a BC, will not be a road or bridge or anything similar, but beyond that I still have visions of things that float (with 12 wheels?!) or fly or crawl around milling about the old BB*.
Scale? undefined, possibly 15mm (this too helps storage)
Period? almost certainly VSF
Colour? whichever of my foundation paints is most full.... it might even be purple....
Affiliation? no idea - well, too many to list, to be precise
*brain box, an Mk1.0 with limited capacityand excessive mileage
-
OK,
discipline won out and as (1) I have limited time and (2) even more limited storage it's going to be at the smaller end of the scale.
Curious to see how many people opted for buildings related to travel - this actually only barely crossed my head, which is trying to make sense of a few weird ideas.
But at least I now have a concept; I won't show it to you as I'm rubbish at sketching, so I'll just show you some IMPORTANT BITS. Especially the grubby pale yellow one.

-
I think buildings have been chosen by most people as that is what they build more.
I'm interested to see what the big yellow wheel is going to be used for :D
cheers

Ooh, good paddle wheel there!
-
Dewbakuk is of course right 8)
Some progress has been made. Here is a sort of cartoon:
Spot of explanation:
1st pic shows the wheel and the starboard side.
The yellow 'paddle wheel' is part of some sort of rotating brush thingy found scrapped in a dump!
The green object is a whiteboard marker cap.
Barely visible amongst the gears is a grey pinion taken from a scrapped printer.
The red bits seen in all the pics are parts from 2 Revell kits of the Jupiter C rocket and launcher purchased at low cost and currently serving as very useful bits collections; the launcher, from which all red parts are taken, consisted of pairs of railway wagons riveted together in the original model.
2nd pic - port side.
The white hollow cylinder (almost hidden under the red platform, and more easily seen in the last pic) is an old light bulb fitting.
The white ribbed thing is obviously part of an old contact lens case (donated by the wife).
The red platforms and frames come from the kit mentioned above.
3rd pic: both assembled.
This is the first pic in which what I am building can be more or less made out - the first ever (is it?)
MONO-PADDLEWHEEL :D :D :D
For the aficionadoes:
The book in the background is a paperback Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian - better than the film!
The wine glass contained (until a few minutes before the pics were taken) a 2007 Castillero del Diablo Merlot from Chile.
I love Chilean wine.

You are drinking wine with a knife in Your hand?
diehard! 8)

And I've still ot ten finers - er - han on, where's the one that does the '' ot to?
Oh buer. Wait, I'll use a different finer: I meant the one that does the 'g'..... >:(
Anyways - the little beastie has a name - it's now called a Conveyancer class vessel, and it has been allocated number FS02.
That's not Ferrovie di Stato (Italian State Railways) but Flotta della Serenissima - the Venetian Fleet.
Stuff added - a small boiler, a huge exhaust, a mysterious-I-beam-with-a-purpose, a balcony (Oh, Romeo, Romeo wherefore art though sort of thing, sans creepers), a ship's wheel and a telegraph (both from a lovely 15mm pack of Peter Pig sailors). I have also built a small barbette cannon but am still undecided about how to incorporate this.
Pics tonight, I hope. :-I
-
The promised pics - incidentally, I sawed off a smal segment of the wheel as I will be basing it.
The spherical boiler:
which is a beer can widget (Guinness).
The big copper exhaust and the I-beam-with-a-purpose:

The wheel and the telegraph:
both from Peter Pig 15mm range 22 pack 61.

Looking great so far, V. Keep it up!

This is getting really interesting :)

Interesting bits but I am not getting what you are aiming for at the end. o_o
Does it go on land or sea ???

:D :D
At a very VERY late stage in its conception I decided it would go on sea.
It's a monowheel device, only in this case the wheel in question is a paddlewheel.
And to mess people up, it's upside down in the pic showing the exhaust.
;)
-
copper piping !
now that's a first...
looks very interesting, yet mysterious ;)
-
Thanks guys.
The best part is that even I don't quite know what it will look like in the end!
The copper tubing - that's a mega-funnel inspired by Japanese carrier design in WWII.
Here are some - ah - ancient sketches:

impressive
I always shy away from using too many different materials, cause I have problems glueing them together and I constantly fear they would fall apart
I try to use only plastic, metal only if necessary, and then I glue together as much surface as posiible or use screws
-
endfest300 should take care of that ;)

what's that?
epoxy glue?
-
"Uhu Zweikomponentenkleber"
I can highly recommend it. It's also used to build RC aircraft
-
not sure
long time ago, I made a very bad experience
I glued togethera multipart lead dragon with it
it held rock hard
then I painted it
then it stood some time on a place where the sun was shining on it
and it fell apart....
is "endfest" heat resistant?

Sounds good - bet you can't get it here :-[ :-[
Does it dry rapidly?
More importantly - is it cat-resistant?!
-
it is a regular 2-component epoxy glue
what do you mean by cat-resistant?
-
what do you mean by cat-resistant?
lol Cats have a tendancy to play/destroy new things that they know they shouldn't and then look all innocent when it breaks, as if to say "It wasn't me!" and I think Vanvlak has one of them :D
cheers

oh
I thought something different was meant
I know what You mean
but my cat never does this
he competes for my attention by jumping into my lap and purring
and when stinking chemicals get involved, he jumps away
maybe he is different or too well educated or too old - who knows exactly about cats? ;)
-
Thanks guys.

Shall I give you three of mine in exchange of yours? Please!!! :o

A flying machine.
Which is a roundabout if elegant way of saying I'm not sure yet!
-
"Shall I give you three of mine in exchange of yours? Please!!! Shocked"
sorry, but the old lad (18) stays where he is
maybe sometime in the future, after I've had to say farewell
how many cats do You have, for Bast's sake?

Good answer :)
That's a grand age for a cat.
I have........7.
Cathode, Random, Tippex, Fox, Sepecat, Sarastro and Erika.
-
(...) Random, Tippex, (...) Sepecat, (...).
C´mon, mate, with names like those you´re just asking for trouble and ensuing hilarity. ;) Much like my brother and his girlfriend naming their second cat "Shiva". Destroyer of worlds, indeed (although she is rather polite and indestructive by now, from what I gather).
Love the assembly. Weirdness à la Vanvlak.
-
is "endfest" heat resistant?
I think so. The box says a short time resistance at 200°C. So everything below 180°C should be safe. As you can use temperature to increase the strenght of the bond, I believe it'll be able to bear slightly increased room temperature ;)
Concerning hardening time, there are instructions: at 20°C it'll take 12 hours and achieve a strength of 1200 N/cm2, at 180°C it'll take five minutes and achieve a strength of 3000 N/cm2.
I've only made good experience with it. This doesn't include any experience with cats, though lol
-
I am still mistrusting, but shall give it a try, thx
Tippex - this is Blasphemy!
I do hope they get outdoors, otherwise it's been Your own fault ;)
mine has a long history, and when he chose us and moved in, we thought we wouldn't give him another name, and simply called him "Kater"
but I must admit he does have some terms of endearment
-
Weirdness à la Vanvlak.
Awww, thanks 8) :D
Tippex - this is Blasphemy!
Blasphemy?
This is PUSS CAT!
Hmmm. frank Miller does it better, I dare say...
He IS a white cat, y'know.
And most do go out.
C´mon, mate, with names like those you´re just asking for trouble and ensuing hilarity.
Well I'm also the one who builds monopaddlewheels....
Shiva.. grand!
The glue sounds like a tough one!
This doesn't include any experience with cats, though
Maybe I should offer to test this....
-
yes
cats should be called like Monarchs or Gods ;)
this reflects the true status quo
I surely would have a lot of fun visiting Your house...
and not only because of Your fabulous miniature collection

Weird miniatures + cats. Needs strong nerves....
And you're welcome, if you ever end up here in Malta.

same goes for You in Cologne

this is one of the most interesting builds I've seen in a while. I love the concept and the artistry. Also love the 'lets raid the bag of bits and see what we find' mentality...! fortune favours the brave!
excellent
-
'lets raid the bag of bits and see what we find'
Dang, someone discovered my technique ;) ;) :D :D
Thank you :)
More pics later - the (might as well own up now) bits pile has added further contributions, and watch out, it's now armed! :o
-
:)thx

Yes. Go for the sausage, stay for the smelly perfume ;D ;).

But I'm a veggie :( :'(
Progress of sorts: a base has been added (the classic old CD base) and it's starting to look busy - perhaps too busy.
Hope I decide to start painting soon as the colours are terribly jarring at the moment.

VanvlakTM! :)
Another Vanvlak characteristic is abandoning projects; but this one might make it. Assembly is now complete, and a basecoat has been applied; and I've even started to make the sea around it on the base.
Pics as soon as I have the chance.
Just as a taster - it's going to be (mainly) green.
-
It is definitely....interesting. I assume this 25/28mm? Will there be a crew and if so what uniform/period?
No, 15mm.
It will belong to the RN in the Mediterranean, who with their allies the Venetians (!) are battling Russians and Berbery Coast pirates :)
Period - 1860s - the Med fleet always gets the new technology late. :D
-
And to please the audience (consisting of 1 - hi Bezzo?) (how's that for breaking the 4th wall?), a couple of pics. Undercoat in GW Foundation Orkhide green. The CD was coated with Vallejo grey pumice texturing paste, not what is usually used for water, but it works well on smaller scales. For this pic you can see part painted in GW Foundation Mordian blue and part still unpainted.
I left the model in two halves as it would otherwise be harder to get at the 'water' around the central portion of the wheel. The white area in the half which is not attached to the CD base will be glued onto the large gear visible in the other half.

Starting to look awesome...
Thank you sir, too kind.
Here's the sea starting to look choppy:

-
Well, that's it completed.
I can't show pics of the completed model for now (according to the rules), so anyone waiting to see the monster (Bezzo?) should not wait up.
I've made a few changes to the history - it looks more modern than the period I had intended, so it's been shifted to 1895. She's still British and still navigating the Mediterranean, but this Conveyancer-class ship now has a name: HMS Upset.
There are 4 hypotheses which could explain this:
1) it follows the naval tradition of naming ships after abstracts such as HMS Victory, HMS Triumph, an 'upset' being something caused to the enemy, of course.
2) So named to commemorate the first triumphant action of this vessel (originally nameless) against the Russians: the Russian gun crews laughed so hard at the sight of this beastie that they couldn't lay their guns properly, and the RN won, upsetting the Russians.
3) The vessel is a little unstable, and tends to swing back and forth about its wheel axis, causing several stomach upsets.
4) The vessel was named HMS Upright, but as it tended to upset regularly she was renamed...
