A docking station for nefs on Mars :D
Now to design the bloody thing ::)
cheers
James
-
Sounds like a great idea James :o
With your building skill it should be brilliant :-*
Can’t wait to see how you get on.
This is going to be an amazing competition.
Don’t set the bar to high though, give the rest of us a chance :D

Don’t set the bar to high though, give the rest of us a chance :D
I've got to finish it first, along with the 1001 other projects on the go lol
Looking forward to see all the entries, there's going to be some really insprirational stuff out there :) :)
cheers
James
-
Right then. Came up with this, the real one will probably be smaller but along the same lines and I reckon I'll start it tomrrow :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/VSF/DSCF4971.jpg)
Any c+c is welcome.
The docking platforms need some work and additional parts adding (don't know what yet though)
cheers

What are the scale it will be design for? 28mm? If so, it like an ambitious project.
Anyhow it look like a very interesting terrain piece. 8)
-
It looks a lot like the plans for my Pathan fort. Are you all going to steal my ideas? ;)
A very nice sketch and ambitious project. Good luck.
-
Excellent sketch - can't wait to see it built! What sort of materials are you going to use?
-
Greetings
oh my. That looks like a lot of fun. Will be huge though. Where will you store the whole thing when it is finished? ;-) *g*
Now, for the boarding ramp. You might perhaps consider placing a low handrail on both sides (as it has a certain height and there *are* winds on Mars.
What "function" will have the Minaret? Will it be pure ornamental, or spiritual? Or will this be the "tower"? Then you'd need windows. Big huge windows, a mix of stout English and and ornamental oriental.
The cannons (sketch lower left). What about trying to build some kind of ramp with adjustable height? Some important wheels on the sides with whom the cannoneer crew (is there such a word?) can lower or heighten the cannon and such provide some sort of air cover ?!
Anyway, that is a brilliant idea you've got there. I will follow this with interest. Thank you much
happy building
Jo

Hi chaps, thanks for the positive comments :)
Scale is for 28mm to go with the rest of the VSF stuff I've got. Materials will be mounting card and foamboard for the walls and main construction and then there will be certain amounts of balsa and other bits and bobs for the rest. It's going to be a case of 'Lets build and see.
@ Hammers - Only if your Pathans have got Neffs ;)
@ artshiraz - I'm not thinking about storage for the moment lol The boarding ramp will have safty chains on the edge and also some sort of guard hut at the end to assist with boarders etc, there will also be some sort of docking mechanism but I haven't a clue as to what yet. The cannon need some work and I'm going to get the Osprey book on ACW emplacements, there should be enough there to get what I want. The mineret is partly there for asthetic reasons, I'm also thinking of it being a sort of watchtower and it will therefore be taller than the main tower
There is no guarantee that this will get done, but the intention is there :D Construction starts today :D
cheers

EEP!
Grand!
Jimbibbly, here's an idea - don't store it, live in it, it'll probably be big enough!
-
Bloody Hell - didn't someone say 'don't set the bar too high'?!! lol
Alright James, we give in - you've won ;)
-
Here you go, I shall be gracious and share a VSF airship docking inspiration pic.

That's glorious :-* :-*
Loads of stuff there to inspire :D Thanks for posting 8)

Should the Minaret also double as a lighthouse ?
A clock on the tower might give a bit more of a Victorian feel too - like a train station (although only if the station has a commercial background rather than purely military)
Might the docking ramp be extendable ? or moveable (drawbridge perhaps) ?
Should there be some defences to deter people scaling the walls ? perhaps small wall hatches to drop grenades through ?
-
Jimbib, if you pull this one off it's going to be a mighty impressive piece of work. I'm afraid I cant offer you any advice other than dont forget the rivets ;) Good to see you've got the ubiquitous loading crane in there.
This is going to be a great excuse for a game! :)
Good luck with the building and the competition .
-
I was under the impression, looking at the sketch, that it was some kind of Oriental (middle-East) design… in that case I wouldn’t put rivets (or a clock on the minaret) in order not to make it look too much Victorian…
@ jimbibbly you might want to take a look at http://www.taminiatures.com/ for ACW Guns on garrison mount ::)
-
I said don’t set the bar too high. You just set the bar so high that I can’t even see it. :o :o
This looks like it is going to be huge :o
Love the idea. :-* :-*
Have you decided if it’s going to be for a particular nation?
Japanese or Chinese or Martian?
Or is the idea to have something generic?
-
Jimbib, if there's not even a hint of a line of rivets somewhere on your magnificent creation you wont be in our secret gang anymore. ;) You know, the secret gang I'm never ever ever supposed to mention on a public forum.......... oops!
-
Jimbib, if there's not even a hint of a line of rivets somewhere on your magnificent creation you wont be in our secret gang anymore. ;) You know, the secret gang I'm never ever ever supposed to mention on a public forum.......... oops!
lol lol lol
Don't worry, there'll be rivets galore (and boilers and mechanical stuff and Victorian embellishments all over)
I think the idea is to have it as a generic (nation-wise) docking station, maybe between two cities, so there will be a mix of architectural styles (but primarily adobe-ish 'cos it's easier and seems to say 'Mars')
Piccies in about an hour. My wife is working today so I can get on with it and hide it before she gets back lol
cheers
James

good luck with Your astonishing project
here's some more inspiration

I love that film :D It was really underated when it came out :( Lots of brill little touches.
Many thanks for the input chaps, I really appreciate it :) :) :)
Now for a couple of photos
Construction on the main tower has begun, although I'm going to have to go to the art shop as I've run out of foamboard :'( The flight stand for the nef is 265mm high which will hopefully be a standard height I use (if I remember)
I've decided to make it in two halfs, one with the main tower and one with the gate and minaret, partly for storage and partly because I don't think I'd get the whole thing done ::) It'll still be usable on the table, just on the edge of the board.
Pretty much all the windows and small doors etc will be cast out of resin and stuck on the surface for quickness. I'm also thinking on cannon embrasures maybe half way down the walls to allow for the bombarding of ground troops (if necessary).
Probably hardly any lift off roofs, but we'll see ;)
Docking ramps will remain in place but will be embellished somehow.
@ jimbibbly you might want to take a look at http://www.taminiatures.com/ for ACW Guns on garrison mount ::)
I love Tim Adcocks stuff and wish I was able to do the same quality of work with guns/equipment etc :-* :-*
Progress will continue, but intermitantly now the intial rush/enthusiasm is over ;)
cheers
James

The cans of supplies in the background are giving me a woodie. :o
-
And he's off!! That's bigger than I thought it was going to be. What you've done so far would have taken me about a month, much swearing and threats of divorce.
-
WOW that’s huge. :o :o :o
You can tell you’re a professional the edges are very, very neat and tidy. If I was doing this there would be a load of filler hiding all the mistakes. How do you manage to get such neat edges on the doorway ???
I agree with TC it would have taken me a month to get that far as well.
Looking forward to seeing this progress.
-
Oh My...looking awesome already :)
-
Looks like you've got the VSF Groupie Girls all in a puddle now, jb...
(No, I am not bitter...) ;)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Everythings been cut by hand slowly, just takes practice (and a camera shot formfar enough away ;) )
I hope I haven't excited anybody too much ;D
More to come tonight :D
cheers
James
-
:o That already look impressive :-*
-
James, it's absolutely correct not to think about storage AT ALL!
When it's finished, just send over that marvelous creation to my address and I will store it for you.
:)
-
Thanks chaps for the positive comments.
Small update for now as I've ben bust with commissions.
I haven't had a chance to go to the art shop yet so I've done some work on the loading crane and colour test...
Many thanks to the Admiral for the inspiration for the crane, kudos to you 8)

Colour test, I think it should be a bit more reddy, as befits the Martian surface. When I go to the art shop I'll get some red ink (the one used was GW's Gryphonne sepia, stupid name!)
All the steam gubbins will be a dark gunmetal colour, or if anyone can think of a better scheme then let me know :)
Sorry to disappoint you Admiral but the storage is sorted ;D
I'm off to SELWG today but my wife will be working when I get back, so I can get the big tower out and do some more to it :D
cheers
James

You must have access to a lasercutter? Lucky sod.
Looks very cool, I think you're winning the "Migod it's gonna be huge! :o" sweepstakes so far!
-
'Fraid so...
But if people aren't happy about it (it is a bit of an unfair advantage) then I don't mind withdrawing my entry :)

No way! Want MORE :D :D :D
Is it CO2 or Nd:YAG or diode? We have a 9kW CO2 monster at work, but it's a bit too expensive to run for this sort of work as we use it for research and would have to change from deposition or welding to cutting head each time.
-
Well done Jimbib! :-*
I notice in the top left hand corner of the first picture you've revealed you secret stash of booze (well, not that secret) ;) With that and a lazer cutter you're asking for trouble, lets see how many fingers you've got left by the weekend.
As for the colour scheme for the metal work all I can add is maybe a bit of wear and tear from the martian atmosphere.
-
But if people aren't happy about it (it is a bit of an unfair advantage) then I don't mind withdrawing my entry :)
I see no reason to do that. Contestants will inevitably have a varied range of materials, tools, paints, ability, experience etc to hand. This would apply to any contest. The important thing is to take part and show what you can do with what you have.
-
thank You @silent invader, I second that with all my heart
and as a competitor, I do not have any problems with a lasercutter ;)
so this is indeed plasticcard for the crane?
-

James
You see me getting green with envy here. :o From the pictures, I can't quite recognize the material - polystyrene, or something else? And what thickness? I might have a few more questions for you, if you don't mind :D
-
Looking good James. :o :o
Don’t dare withdraw from the competition. Unless you are scared we will put you to shame with our amazing skills. :D ;)
We are all jealous of you having access to the laser cutter. ;D
The build is looking great so far. :-* :-* :-*
Can’t wait to see this progressed.
-
Laser cutter - pah! :D :D
Ask him what he does for a living :D
I do actually agree with all thats been said. Its all about the posts from everyone, its not even like there is a prize :)
-
He's perfectly allowed to use a laser cutter. He just has to cut out the templates I need for my build too ;)
I'll expect to pick them up at BLAM.
-
Not at all James - for me LAF comps aren't about winning or even taking part, they're about sharing and learning. :)
Oh, and it's looking rather good! :D
To me it is all about crushing and humiliating the opposition and to strew salt on their workbenches! :)
-
No withdrawing is allowed! :D
I am thrilled to see the finished result!
Anders
-
:D I'll stay in then :D ;)
The material that's been laser cut is 1.5mm mounting card (hence the slightly brown edge), it's basically free as we have loads of off cuts from a job a while back (it's all 110mm x 720mm).
Many thanks for the encouragement and prepare to be amazed :o ;)
cheers
James
-
it goes without saying that all competitors who loose against You get a free lasercut ;)
preferrably plastic 8)
so anyone - vote for Jimbibbly :D
-
Looking even more spectacular with each new set of photos. That crane is marvellous.
I am very pleased you live so close, we can get a game in using it as soon as its finished :D
-
Well, I have photos for an update but Photobucket seems to be having a 'puter-fart and will not let me upload anything and then decides to crash my explorer. Bloody computers >:(
I'll see what happens tomorrow but with BLAM coming up (and I still have a few things to do ::) ) it might have to wait until next week :(
Bloody computers >:(
cheers
James
-
James, your crane design i just lovely; can't wait to see the finished piece!
Btw, you know that you can upload your pics to your own gallery here at the LAF? Might be an alternative to that farty Photobucket ...
hint, hint ... ;D
-
Aha, I forgot about that, I'll get on it later today :D
Cheers Admiral 8)
cheers
James
-
Right, I think I've got a problem with my 'puter, I can't upload to the LAF gallery either :( I'll try again later.
cheers
James
-
Theres nowt wrong with ya puter you just aint done what you said you had :D
-
:P :P
I have :P
I'll even bring my camera tomorrow to show you :P ;)
cheers

Hey, don't withdraw. That's just a tool at your disposal and this is a contest just for fun. So make us proud, my good man!
-
Is it CO2 or Nd:YAG or diode? We have a 9kW CO2 monster at work, but it's a bit too expensive to run for this sort of work as we use it for research and would have to change from deposition or welding to cutting head each time.
Sorry, missed this one.
We have two, one at 60W and one at 100W, a bit piddly I'm afraid but they do the job :) We can get through 20mm perspex on the 100 though which comes in handy every now and then. Bed size is only 720mm by 420mm, we were angling to get a 1m by 1.5m with a vacuum bed, but we got a router table instead :? Bloody cheapskate boss!
What sort of research do you do? (surely it should be 'What sort of material cuts best for rivets' ;D )
cheers
James
-
Right, I think I've got a problem with my 'puter, I can't upload to the LAF gallery either :( I'll try again later.
James
The LAF Gallery upload function is a bit temperamental.
It can't cope with files bigger than 500Kb - and sometimes balks at those and just hangs...
But providing you resize each pic to under 400Kb before upload, it normally 'bulk uploads' five pics within about 30 - 40 seconds
-
Cheers Cap'n, I'll give it a go
cheers
James
-
Being the plonker that I am, I only seem to be able to upload as a link (please excuse my computer numptyness ;D )
All the tower main walls are done and the crane has a location and work has started on the boarding ramp. I think I'll have the crane arm raise and lower but not winch, it can rotate aswell. I have to give some thought as to the location of the cargo access in the tower.

Now then my good man, how on earth did you do that :)

Now then my good man, how on earth did you do that :)
Voodoo. First, select a chicken...
No, actually it's fairly simple.
Go to your LAF gallery page(s); right-click on the image and (in Firefox, at least) select "Copy Image Location", then come back to your message window and Paste (Edit->Paste, Ctrl+V, etc) which should get you a URL directly to your image.
Now highlight this entire URL and click on the little "Image" button in the toolbar, 3rd one in from the left, after the Wikipedia "W". This will put img tags around your URL, in [ square brackets ].
Any image link surrounded by img tags will become an actual image in your post, instead of a link.
Clear as Martian mud, yes?
-
gods in heaven .....
I always toyed with the idea to explore vertical wargaming, but You literally smash it in to my face
magnificent
I must say that allthough (or because of) so many projects I see so far in the contest are awesome and inspiring, it somehow and sometimes takes the wind out of my sails to push my meek armoured train to the deadline.....
man....
where do You all get the time for this....
-
Thanks muchly Wirelizard, I was getting the process the wrong way round, Doh! :)
Thanks for the comments chaps :) I tend not to go to bed early and can sit at my desk for a good few hours almost every night.
BLAM this weekend so no more until later next week when hopefully all the main construction will be done :)
cheers
James
-
Glad to see you fixed the picture problem James.
Coming along very well :-* :-* :-*
Is there going to be access to the tower at ground level or do you need a Nef to get there?
-
Excellent so far, I would say, Sir!

Could this one be moved aswell please.
No hope what-so-ever to get done for... Sunday (god, that turned up quick)
I'll try and get it done for Crimbo though.
