So I gave in to doing some 28mm Sci Fi and here is the first member of the Light Infantry Platoon for the Republic of Ashen.
The Ashen Republic is a collection of world's that were so loyal to the Federation they didn't even have their own defence forces. Instead they relied solely on Federation Defence Force Garrisons to protect them. When the Federation began to retract back to the core planets it took all it's garrisons with it and the Republics world's became easy pickings. This set the Republic into a buying spree, scrambling to amass any weapons and equipment it could and hiring anyone willing to join it's new army. As a result the Republic of Ashen is quite the Hodge podge army, with no two soldiers looking quite alike...

Nice 8)

Nice work on the trooper, and like your little back story there, very cool. Thanks for sharing.
-
Nice, is the dude a stargrave Plastic fig?
-
Yes it's from the Stargrave Mercenary Boxset. They're really nice figures, nice and easy to paint.

Groovy. Looking forward to seeing what else you do with this.

Following with interest!
-
First Squad finished!
-
Very nice.
-
Cracking work,very realistic 8)
-
Oh, wow! You nailed your first squad. They look outstanding. 👍🏼
-
Looking brilliant. :D
-
Good work there.
-
Here is the first test scheme for one of the Republics primary enemies: The Arachnids.
-
That bug gives me the creeps, but in a good way! Nice to see one painted.
-
I was thinking of doing something similar with the WGA spiders and SG figs.
-
very nice project :-*
-
Reminds me of the giant telepathic spiders from Rick and Morty:

Just remember, they only want flies in their ice cream.

Go for it! Its a good time for 28mm sci fi I think.
Its a shame Antenocitis packed up as there aren't many vehicles available for different armies now, but with Wargames Atlantic producing new plastic sets for its Death Fields/Iron Core ranges there is going to be a lot of opportunities for generic armies.
Also I like that spider, maybe I'll have to adopt red ruby eyes for the Arachnids!
-
I would suggest poaching some vehicles from Matic games Dead zone armies or maybe from some of the factions in "Beyond the gates of Anterus".

I hadn't thought of Antares, they'd be on point for Alien vehicles!
-
Right the GHAR EMPIRE battle suits could be heavy armor/power armor for the Nids even their buildings might work for an advanced hive/nest Arachnid colony entrance. Or maybe go with a more organic look with the Isorians vehicles and the Tsan Ra can be used as Nid heavy warriors.

So I have been looking at the Stargrave troopers and what turned me off is that they have thigh and shin armor but nothing on the knees. It looks....wrong....
But the mercenaries have knee pads?????

Yes they do, or almost all of them do. I think they look, bizarrely more soldier like than the actual Soldiers, although I still plan to use the soldiers as heavy mechanised infantry.
Also; the first Lizardman Merc...
-
How did you make him? Just cut off the weapon and add the gun?
-
Those guns come with the WGA Lizardman set, so you have pieces to make them Sci-Fi-ish. Although as you'll see later when I get the first Squad done, I've also taken weapons from other sets and added them to mix things up a bit.
The Eisenkern box is pretty good as at least there are lots of separate weapons without arms attached.
-
Just an addendum to my comment above....I just got a sprue of Stargrave Troopers and they do have teeny tiny, almost non noticeable kneepads. I will still be going with Mercenaries because their legs look better.
Also just a quickie.....the Buzz Lightyear toys have a drop vehicle that is the right size for 28mm. Its a copper/bronze color and at Target right now if you are in the US.
-
Here's the light-year ships that are closest to 28mm.
The left is the Armadillo and the right is the Zerg fighter.

Figures are a 33mm Chronoscope and 28mm Infinity.

Thanks for the pics, mine were packed in my car when I posted <g> I got 2 on sale, am thinking about 2 more, just cause.
I am doing a Sci Fi RPG, so not sure if I need 2....
I am wondering if I should just do a straight paint job or try to strip the paint already on it.....

The mouth is a sticker so that is easy to remove. I'll check, but the emblem and number I think are thick enough that sanding off before repaint is probably a good idea. I'd just paint over anything else.

I recently began supporting Bob Naismith on Patreon and got some of his civvie figures printed.
Thought for interests sake I thought I'd show off the first Mini I've painted this far. And show a little size comparison.
These guys are true 28mm. At first I thought they were 25mm but realised the rapid scale creep in minis right now (32mm seems to be the thing, but I've ended up with figures now hitting 35!!) makes 28s seem tiny.
-
Nice Sci-Fi Civilian there. What do the others look like?
-
Some how I missed this thread until now. Great work! Especially that spider. Brilliant! 👍
-
Some more Civis, Ex-Spacer, Wastes Wanderer, City Girl and Fella from the Hood. All from Bob Naismith.
-
Nicely done :)
-
Yup, nicely done. Nice to see citizens who don't seem to be tooled up.
-
I agree, nice paint job & minis.
Keep posting pics.
Wonder how those will look printed in 18mm
