RATS!! I was silly enough to believe i was the only one thinking along these lines. Fortunately I'm thinking about a differant era and continent .Good Luck
-
I like harbour models, there are so many different things that can be included. They are always an inspiration 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Might be worth looking at "John Adams" for some harbour details too.
-
Looks promising :D

Ah, now I was down at Lamorna just a few weeks ago, and that shed does look a bit like the boathouse where they now run the kayaking from!
And glad to hear you're going for coffee stirrers for planking.
Terrain builders of the world - let Starbucks subsidise your hobby! (It's the price they pay for global brand domination... ;) )
-
Apart from the mini series it's worth looking for the documentary about the making of the series - includes (if I remember properly) interviews with set designers etc.
-
Nice planning approach, Invader. Looks really promising ...
;D
-
Nice idea
Looking forward to seeing the build.

I need to start drinking more coffee I used up my total store of coffee stirrers on my build. (a grand total of 2)
-
Lovely. No mast crane?

They're easier to steal from Ikea restaurants, they have vast amounts of them out on those islands with the condiments. I have lots :)
-
Go with idea 3) but around the groove you cut in the base of the harbour glue some tree moss/Scotchbright pad to make a small bush that can move slightly up and down to accomodate the change in river/lake bank size thus hide any little gaps.
-
WOW more planning. :D
And now it help because this time I understand what you are doing. ;D
It is going to be a very versatile board when you are finished :-* :-* :-*
-
What an excellent scheme and planning, sir! I'm looking forward to the final result.
-
Looking good Steve :D, I'm expecting great things of this build :D
Keith :?

Having worked out where I would store them, I bought 5 of the 1200mm x 500mm x 500mm pink styrofoam panels from B&Q at £3.78 each.
Moving over to a foam panel system means that I will be able to sink the water into the table, which will add absolutely nothing to the mechanics of gaming but which will be (for me) more aesthetically pleasing.
Good man! Quite right. You won't regret it ;)
The plans look fiendishly complicated to me, but your scientific approach seems to pay dividends, so I'm sure this will work out beautifully.
-
OH NO! More plans to confuse everyone lol
This is going to be an epic project now Steve :D
Keith :?
-
Believe it or not I am starting to understand your plans now. It must be all the past experience of them. o_o
In your plans you could introduce even more complicated arrangements by buy cutting the board length to 1000mm. This would allow two boards side by side to match up with one placed length ways along the top or bottom. The mind boggles about the amount of combinations with five boards. ;D ;D ;D
I will leave that to you to work out :D
-
Riverworld here Ye come!
"not for rent", Captain Clemens ;) :D
-
Looking good :-*
-
I'm quite looking forward to seeing the end result :D
-
looks really good :-*nice work on the hoist. I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished ;D
-
Chappie raises standards above and beyond. Fellow might have to get cracking with own project, whatwhat. :-[
-
Inspiring stuff SI.
I particularly like the hoist and small corral.
-
Very nice buildings :)
Looking forward to seeing this all come together.

Wot he said. :)

Looking good 8)
-
Coming on great :-* :-*
I still find it strange when you use the felt for the water.
-
Very intriguing with the felt idea.
So far its looking excellent and I really hope the felt works out ok. I can't see how its not going to look like felt covered with varnish ???
Fingers crossed for you as so far I have really liked all your projects. :)
-
It's always worrying to see the white when using varnish as a water effect. I used Future/Klear polish for a project and found it's all down to allowing it time to set/dry. Rest assured, it will turn clear. :)
-
Looking Great :o S.I you've got some excelent ideas.I'm listening closely on the water subject,I've never had to model any water feature bigger than a puddle, and my entry is 40% water feature!!!hope everything works out , Good Luck
-
I can see a white lake
was that intended?
I'm a bit puzzled....
-
The close up of the shore where the varnish has dried looks really good, realistic.
Hopefully the rest will dry out the same.

I agree, it certanly gives the impression of moving water. fingers crossed it dries clear.
-
My only concern would be that the new layer will prevent the original one from drying... I know it's an easy thing to say but thinner layers dry faster.
-
what can I say that atuff is so interesting aand you are realy a master terrain maker !
very good work
Grimm
-
Thats a fantastic job Steve. You've done yourself proud :D :D
I really hope that thevarnish is drying clear
Keith :?
-
try drilling holes from the underside IMHO
-
I am really amazed at the amount of work You are putting into this project.
I draw my hat at this perseverence.
And all turns out nicely too ;)
-
Love the boats and especially that they can accommodate the minis with ease, great project in general!
-
sorry to complain, but the yoke of the cart has to sit on the shoulders of the mule, between bladebone and neck
in that position You either kill the mule or the Yoke slips off the back
-
pleased to be of use ;)
btw, that is how we (archaeologists) find out if an animal was used for draft : usually the scapula has grown extra cartilage mass to extend the angle of the muscles due to heavy work

btw, that is how we (archaeologists) find out if an animal was used for draft : usually the scapula has grown extra cartilage mass to extend the angle of the muscles due to heavy work
Does cartilage not decay along with the muscles then? I'd have assumed it would rot.
-
with age
and a lifelong hard work, cartilage solidifies to a bony mass (ossification)
our ribcage e.g. is cartilageous in the front, but gets stiff with age
that's why old people are breathing heavily, because it is less flexible
if You find the skeleton of an old man, the ventral rib parts will be preserved because the cartilage has ossificated.
same with a draft animal - these are usually kept longer (training, muscles) and get old
slaughter animals are raised only up to full growth, thus most cartilage isn't preserved
this is the short version...
-
This is coming on Brilliantly Steve :D :-* :D :-*
former user: Wow thats a fantastic peice of information, it always amazes me what jobs & information you find out on forums :D
Keith :?
-
Great work S.I :o :o Love your boats i wish I had more time to study this thread , been only able to skim through on coffee breaks at work.Home time has been spent trying to meet the deadline, waiting for varnish to dry at the moment!I lookk forward to seeing your finished entry
-
Resign yourself to the fact that your water may never clear entirely. My river is still slightly cloudy in places where I poured too thickly. The top's gone off, the deeper level has stayed slightly opaque. Not bad, but not quite as I'd have wished... :'(
-
I never noticed the problems when I seen your boards in the flesh. :-* :-* :-*
You are just being over critical :D
Good luck Silent Invader after all this lovely work you must post an entry to the competition.
-
really brillant
such devotion....
-
what can I say ?
ou are a genius man I salute you.
top work
Grimm
-
Great work!! I'm really enjoying watching the progress of your project.
I REALLY like your canoes and Bateau, they're brilliant :-*
-
apart from the white, I consider Your river very convincing.
It looks a bit muddy though - have You considered transparent colours?
there are special acrylic additives that make the colour semi-transparent
maybe You should try that, in order to give it a bit of a streaming structure?
-
When you get that shine on the water from a low angle, it looks bloomin' marvellous SI.
It's just a darn shame about the cloudiness :(
Sadly, I know how you feel.
Hey ho - it may yet clear... I wonder if it would make any difference if you applied heat, like a warm hairdryer... It might help it go off. Worth a try? ::)
(Please don't melt your styrene though! I'd never forgive myself lol)
-
Glad to see you're still updating us on this project!!I love the finished canoes :-*
the way you used greenstuff for the details is a technique I wished I'd new about when i started on my san -pans and Junk. It'll come in handy in the future though, Thanks!Hope your varnish clears up OK and soon
-
Well, if the worst should happen and it never clears, wouldn't it be possible to make it a winter themed board? If it's frozen water, it doesn't matter that it looks white.
-
Its been great to see this come together and its looking superb (fingers crossed for the varnish).
The fact that you have scratch built everything down to the boats, canoes, hay wagon etc makes it even more appealing. Truly wonderful. ;D
-
SI, I followed your project with great interest and admired your tremendous abilities as boat builder and canoe craftsman. Keep on the good work, and I'm sure you will have many fantastic gaming hours on that table!
:-*
-
This is extremely cool! :-*
-
Very, very nice :-* :-*
Glad to see the water getting there!
-
Love the way the water is showing the contents of the murky depths! :)
-
ah, patience allways works out ;)
it really looks - 1A
-
Excellent work! The varnish does take a heart-stopping length of time to cure in clear form, but as you can see, the result is worth it. :)
-
How has the river cured? Clear yet?
-
An excellent effect.
This one in particular really looks like water.

Wow! I've been following the progress of these boards for a while and whilst impressed by the incredibly high standard of craftsmanship put into the individual pieces but I really have to say that the whole thing is so much more than the sum of it's parts. This is definitely some of the most beautiful gaming terrain that I have ever seen, I can't wait to see the rest of the pieces for this board. Keep up the great work. :)

-
Superb job Steve :D :-* :D :-* :D :-* :D :-*
-
This is looking great - the 'decorated'' table is superb.
Interesting to hear how the varnish drying is going, as I'm looking at something similar later in the year, and am weighing up the options.
-
It really looks fantastic, even sans vegetation. You will have some roaring games I am sure. I like seeing the two Simons (Girty and Kenton) from Conquest on it also.
-
simply...
exciting
now You need a poster for the wall
something from canada or alaska
-
That looks great :-* :-* :-*
Look forward to the battle reports :)
-
An absolutely fantastic board, it's been a real pleasure to watch this project as it progresses and grows, all your planning and research seems to have really paid off as you've ended up with a beautiful finished product. I look forward to seeing the progress on the fort.
Haarken :)
-
Simply amazing. I wish I had a fraction of the talent and patience that went into this.
-
Well done. Well done.
-
That's a grand set up you've got there, anyone would be proud to have it :)
One thing I will suggest is a bit more of a lighter drybrush on the roads, just to give them a bit of a lift but other than that, cracking :-* :D
cheers
James
-
Great work :-* :-* :-*
It has been a pleasure to watch this from start to finish.
Keep up the good work.
Looking forward to some battle reports.
-
@former user
Hmmm a poster as backdrop sounds like a good idea. I shall have to look for one. As it happens I intend to leave the table in place over the next few weeks or so to motivate me in the painting of minis. Before the end of the month I hope to have had a game on it as well.
there are quite a few backdrops available for railway modelling.
if You can't find one send me a PM and I'll search for some german links
-
we made a quite primitive backdrop for a club presentation, which was structured blue wallpaper pasted on a MDF board and supported with bookends from the side.
But we also thought about railway backdrops, and there are so many available, we could not make a decision on short notice ;)
-
A masterpiece! :-* It's been a real treat watching your progress from start to finish. Anyone would be proud to game on it.
