Title: 3D printed droids 18mm
Post by: zrunelord on July 11, 2022, 11:14:40 AM
Hello again all,
These are from Papsikels.
I must say that they do some very nice & diverse droids/robots. Great for scifi & cyberpunk.
Will post more of their models.

Those look great.  Your paint job certainly does them justice.  They would be good for Infinity.

Great paintjob! Papsikels definitely makes a lot of good robots.

Thanks all,
They are indeed good for infinity , also.

One of the best ways I found to paint resin minis ( I use WW Elegoo grey ) is to wash the mini with a dark shade ( I use home made blue black ink mix ). No undercoat.
Then I drybrush with a light grey. Then apply paint /washes /contrast . Main problem is that resin minis are by nature , fragile so drybrushing may break off parts.

Here are some more by Papsikels. I agree Papsikels make some great droids.

Cook 3d printing does open a lot off venues & we are spoilt for choice. ;D plus the kitbashing fun one can have. For e.g. the heads of these scuttlers would make great humanoid heads if scaled down.

Awww, they had babies! lol Nice work on the scuttlers.

How long are you curing your prints? While I tend to have some angst about fragility while removing supports from thin or delicate parts, after curing I find the figures to be incredibly durable regardless of how thin the parts are. I've been warned off of over-curing as it can tend to make the resin very brittle. I usually run my curing station for 3-minutes, rotate the figure 180 degrees, and cure for two more minutes. The final durability is hard with just a slight bit of flex, using Elegoo water washable resin.

Thanks all.
Glad you like them ...here's more.

Cook , 2.5 to 3 minutes each side in the Mercury curing station, But this depends on the thickness as I had some Mech miniatures that cracked after some time due to uncured resin inside.

After ( some !!!) tinkering I found that my Mars 2 Pro works best with 3 secs exposure time & 60 secs bottom exposure time. 60 secs bottom lift speed seems to work well also, with nothing left stuck to the FEP.

I feel that sometimes resin 3D printing is a " keep your fingers crossed " affair.

E.g. I printed a mini successfully in one job then used the exact same model ( including the same supports ) in the next print & it failed !!!!

Or

For example, pausing a print job  is supposed to work "seamlessly", right ? At least that's what they say .....  well in my case, I ended up with plate full of half marines, just legs  ...
I learnt my lesson ... always top up resin before starting a job. It is also time consuming & messy, even if very rewarding when successful.
I now always drain the tank & clean FEP before each job using a kitchen silicon scraper ( I think I changed my FEP around 6 times due to small stuck bits damaging it  :( :( :( )

Not complaining , just trying to help others with my experiences .

Any way more from papsikels. Some were kitbashed , all had ankles & guns strengthened.
As you can see 2 shields did not come out properly. Fixed them with card. Some have layers showing but these don't show under the naked eye.
Lovely minis.

Looking good. Man, I can't print and paint this fast. Even if I run a couple of plates every other weekend I end up with a backlog of printed stuff that isn't getting painted. Still cheaper than buying minis and not painting them though lol

I have never had any real issues with resin sticking to the FEP. I alternate three reservoirs, and always run them pretty full before starting a print. In fact, I just changed my first FEP the other day. A bit tedious, but it came out well enough. I usually run 2-3 plates of prints through before dumping whatever is leftover and thoroughly cleaning the reservoir, and I never scrape the FEP. The last bit of cleaning, even with water-soluble resin, is to wash the reservoir with rubbing alcohol. I've taken to dumping excess resin in a sandwich baggie and running it in the curer for 5-10 minutes. I was trying to put it outside in the sun to cure, but that only works in the summer and not on rainy days. Sacrificing a sandwich bag for a no-mess cleanup is an easy choice.

Some great droids there! the little guys in the last few photos do you happen to have mor information on them? I checked Pico and they didn't seem to have them listed. Bombshell has some others list but seem too tall.

The Bombshell Droids are these. They had a 50% sale last week, might still be on.

Thank you for sharing these.
I have long wondered how they scaled next to 15mm figures. I have thought often about the legged helper droids, but from you nice job on the "wheeled" fellow, I think I like them more now. More of a Googie retro feel that I like.

Nice work on them

So many manufactures are doing the 3D printing anymore it is hard to keep track or what is where.

Thank you & you're welcome.
Will post more.....

They have more types & I wish I had gotten them all BUT you have to say stop somewhere.

The digital mountain is more insidious than the lead/plastic one as it is not visible.......
there are SOOOOO many nice 3d models it is very easy to get carried away.... o_o o_o

Hello again all,
These are another set of 3d printed droids from Papsikels.
Printed in small & large format.
Nice minis if a bit fiddly in 18mm. One must shore them up especially the ankles as they
can ( will) easily snap off. Note that the print lines are virtually invisible at this scale.
