Title: Modular cave system updated on 12 July.
Post by: snitcythedog on 17 July 2022, 03:53:03 PM
I have finished the first piece of a modular cave system that has been kicking around in my head for a couple of years now.  I was torn between doing many small modular pieces and larger set sections.  I chose the latter as they will store better and will be modular enough for what I want to do.  I started with a 12 inch square foamex base.  The walls are 1 and 3/4 inches high.  The texturing was done with large chunks of bark and spackle.  I have three sections built and in various states of texturing.  I am planning on completing either nine or twelve section.  Enough to cover a 3X3 or a 4X4 table.

Really like the broken pots and all the shards. Something like that could be useful for a number of settings. Do you have any suggestions on making similar?

Thanks for the comps all.

I did a toot for the main body of the broken pots here:  https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=127143.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=127143.0)
The chards were crushed egg shell.  It can be stabilized with very thin super glue.  Once set is is quite tough.

True.  My wife's friends thought I was crazy when I had them collect mane and tail hair for my rubberized horse hair tutorial.

Another two sections done.  First has three parallel hallways.  The highlight was a bit strong but it will do.

I would like to see how you made this piece.
Here you go.
Built the basic structure out of foamex and liquid nailed chunks of bark onto the walls and floor.  Filled the voids with foam.  Glued some 3d printed pieces that will end up textured too.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOzj3HiG0wxuDu_1tqVaepfBg0ANSJIw2cI7oRF0GGhUa2Gr3SrqZlo0_eDv6vgzmNkx0GvxmSTtIfkQAVdfp3knnzFx70-84z1RqzYKlkOooOUCl2uRkLSNtOZShVvn1GPwbhe3mYvjUWJQwamvU0ExTAqSlc6f2LAhakHC1vaZ_SVyjPOEkUWV-9/s4032/IMG_2788.jpg)
Made a piping bag out of baking paper. Used the bag to put blobs of filler in between the chunks of bark and then used a wet brush to texture the filler.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFZcCzCTgCKGL1l93BXG3XhnxUwjRoIi7m-U0XskEhbJpFSD98E9u6DmnieScjD-1lWVOr_Yn8LwxXPTUj4K3QuRmW11sKYWGH_Ab2t8dEQa6Ecp_0gzj8HJv5cBZzltnRXWtKNj_7bzBUsg5ZWvVP9Y2lbO0jCPqLOhCvaEswQhU2r5iiMFEUkWgJ/s4032/IMG_2789.jpg)
Once all of the spaces are covered in filler and set I add bits such as permanent details and rubble.  This was set with very thin super glue.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWg3VV1AeMw1EpQ6FhJUpwvM_bDv1bOLd3kVXYVPj5NvqRDjdlmXViS22NCgr8-jVjCf1aqVj7nS_F1X94M6IM3OfFfvL0rMX_fUcnA4l_dVpNZfPpoc67aMEzY5DmeVWuhneMrzzBmS4ZYWQuh315_rOgmodjXc1hS5GFJXcjTeIOUDarZLJ2P6zn/s4032/IMG_2794.jpg)

Managed to get the three sections done in between clearing out the garage, vet appointments for the pony, the dog, watering the allotment and getting stuff together for the child's trip to Uni.  Looking at them in the light of day I will still have to dust up some of the artifacts as they look out of place but that will be fairly quick and easy to do.
Here are all the sections together.

Absolutely lovely; they work well together and offer endless variety in setup.

The subtle colours also are a treat; very characterful and the idols here and there are also interesting. I have to echo the doll remark; one can only speculate at the origin and purpose of that ritual...  8)

Will this be the extent of the amount of tiles, or will you do more in the future? Looks like this amount alone makes for near endless replayability already!

This will most likely be it unless I get a wild hair up later to do some "feature" rooms.  Trying to drum up a frostgrave game with some of the players at the club to see how it plays.

Not really.  Neither the foamex or foam are porous and I have not noticed and cracks in the spakeling.
