Title: Modern miniatures project by MaaX
Post by: MaaX on July 21, 2022, 07:19:54 PM
Hi all,

Mercenaries, organized crime, black ops operators or anything else really. They don't have and insignia or emblems so could be from any country or corporation. Equipped with mix of AK-12 and M4s with one L86 LSW machine gun. I'm going to use them as Mercenaries, Black Ops operators or very organized crime. For various modern skirmish rulesets.

Miniatures are from Spec Ops expansion set for Project Z by Warlord Games and camo decals are from Green Stuff World.

Nice looking! Too be clear, is the camo painted on the minis, or is it applied decals, or both? Either way, great stuff!

Wow, those decals can't be easy to apply on a 28mm fig. Great job; I'll have to give it a try sometime.
Title: Re: Modern mercenaries - Warlord Spec Ops (28mm)
Post by: MaaX on August 02, 2022, 09:16:28 PM
Yeah they were quite a challenge ;) and the digital pattern is a little to big for this scale. On the other hand "regular" camo decals are a lot smaller but also more difficult to apply. Lucky the decals fixer/softener does its job.

I can't even get a shield decal to work on a 28mm fig...I can't imagine doing a decal on the camo pattern!!  lol

Decals can be tricky... I remember building some waffen ss trucks where the license plate were decals and every digit was separate piece, on top of that the two lightning bolts in front were in 3 pieces...

Amazing work! Besides the splendid paint job, you have me interested in getting some of these figures. Would you happen to know if they pair well with Spectre: Operations miniatures, scale wise?

I think the Specter are a little smaller, I will take a comparison pics tomorrow and post here.

I'd say the Spectres might be a bit bigger, but would still work fine together.

No worries  ;) and yeah before I put them together I though the specter was smaller as those plastics from warlord felt a bit chunkier.

I'm renaming this thread and will keep updating it with all my modern minis.

So I got a police sniper in ghillie suit from Anthalonica(now called warfighter miniatures) a while back. It came with broken barrel and I tried to fix it by replacing it with metal rod. It went ok I guess but the more I looked at him the more I disliked my repair job. So today I decided to cut his original weapon off and replace it with AK-12. I'm super happy with how it turned out.

I'm also considering adding spare mags and helmet to the base but I'm kind of hesitant about this and I worry that these extra parts will overcrowd this small base.

For the record - the seller offered replacement but originally this mini came with police sniper rifle with shorter barrel. Which wouldn't be great as most of my minis are military/pmc types and I really bought this mini for the camo suite.

Its waaay to hot to paint so I'm building some objective markers instead.
These are supposed to be black market arms dealer weapons for sell on display. Or some bad guys storage room props.

Undercover Operator with SMG from Spectre Miniatures.

I went for Miami Vice or Vice City theme with this one. Its was also my first attempt at painting reflective sunglasses as usually I just go with plain black.
He is armed with MP7A1 sub machine gun.

So originally this was a police sniper in ghillie suit from Anthalonica(now called warfighter miniatures).

I converted him into special operation guy with modern type of AK by cutting of his weapon and left palm. I replaced it with AK-12 with under slug grenade launcher and a spare palm - both from Project Z Spec Ops kit from Warlord games.

I really like this mini and will consider getting few more for similar conversions in the future.  ;)

Two snipers from Spectre Miniatures.
Armed with Arctic Warfare Magnum and L129A1 Sharpshooter.
I tried to recreate The M/84 camouflage pattern of the Danish military on the few bits of their uniforms that are visible.

I started working on another group of Mercenaries/PMC types. This time the common them on all minis will be grayish blue uniform with brown boots.
They will have mix of different weapons and different tactical vests and head covers.

First up - RPG team.

The guy with M4 is supposed to be loader. Unfortunately there were no non-shooting arms in the box so I just gave him spare RPG ammo on the back. Its not perfect but will have to do for now.

Wanted a break from the slow going fantasy stuff and painted some modern minis.  :)

Grenadier equipped with AK variant with a rail system, EOTech weapon sight and UGL.
With him is the Tier 1 drone operator equipped with suppressed MCX Rattler PDE with red dot steering Puma UAV.

Final group of minis from the Warlord's plastic Spec Ops set.

I wanted them to look more like special forces compared to the previous two groups.

They are armed with Chines QBZ-03 assault rifles and QBZ-95-1 light machine gun. One of them is also carrying AT-4 launcher.
All of them are equipped with AN/PSQ-20 night vision and standard assault kits.

Camo is also from decals by green stuff world.

I’ve added three more Spec Ops from Warlord Games to the unit, bringing it up to an 8-man team.
Camo decals are from Green Stuff World

Armed with Chines QBZ-03 assault rifles - one rocking a marksman scope and another packing an under-barrel grenade launcher (UGL) for extra firepower.
All of them are also equipped with AN/PSQ-20 night vision and standard assault kits.

Here are the next three Project Z Spec Ops miniatures from Warlord Games that I’ve finished painting. These are the last fully original ones from this set, as I plan to convert the remaining two with parts from other Project Z kits.

Each miniature is armed with a different weapon: M4 variant with triple mag, SA80, and L85A2. I gave each a unique camouflage pattern and headgear for variety.

I've just finished painting two custom Project Z Spec Ops miniatures, both created using parts from the Apocalypse Survivors and Biker Gang sets. One miniature has civilian-style pants, a swapped head, and is equipped with an M4 Benelli shotgun. The other features a new head and arms, with a tracksuit-like look under the vest, and carries an M16.

Thanks for all your kind words – they really help keep me motivated to keep painting, even though I don’t always like the results.

Looks really great, especially the shades of the bald guy.

Thank you! I was aiming for a reflective bluish-green effect on the lenses, even though the glasses are very small (much smaller than the ones on the helmeted heads). I’m quite happy with how it turned out!

Thank you! For the jeans, I was trying to replicate this: link (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=130527.msg1654264#msg1654264), but I couldn’t remember the technique or paints I originally used. This time, I checked out some denim tutorials on YouTube, and while I wasn’t sure the final effect turned out exactly as I wanted, I’m glad you like it!

Yeah, I look that up in the meantime. Thanks!

Anyways...
Let’s move away from questionable commercials and back to what really matters: painted minis! Here are my new objective markers – tables with guns.

The weapons are from the Project Z Spec Ops and Survivors sets. The crate and concrete rings are from WH40K terrain bits, the bricks are resin (unfortunately, I don’t remember the manufacturer), and I made the tabletops myself using coffee stir sticks. Hope you like them!

I especially like the coloured parts (instead of painting everything black/gunmetal).

Making my own is on my to do list. I think I'll mix in some late WW2 spare weapons. I've got more of these in my bits-box than modern ones and understand that these have been used in numerous conflicts since WW2 even up to the present day.

After-Action Report: Black Ops 100pts - Mission A "Encounter"

Forces:

US Rangers (Opponent)

Deniable Operators (Mine)

Terrain: The VillageThe battlefield was a small village featuring a single enclosed homestead consisting of two buildings and a surrounding fence. The buildings were integrated into the fence, meaning there was only one gated entrance to the courtyard and another access point through the larger house. Across the street, there was a shed with an open yard containing stacked crates on pallets. Another smaller building stood adjacent to the road. The area surrounding these structures was covered in trees and bushes. The narrative setup for the battle was that this village was the base of an arms dealer, who fled before the conflict, leaving both forces to engage in a fight to secure the weapons.

Game Summary:

At the beginning of the game, the US Rangers took control of the area around the shed and the crate-filled yard. Meanwhile, I attempted to take the enclosed homestead from the opposite side. However, I lost two crucial turns trying to breach the door of a building at the edge of the compound. Eventually, I managed to gain entry, reaching the interior, but another set of doors led to the enclosed courtyard where more crates were located. Realizing that forcing another door would waste more time, I left one operator inside for security and moved the rest of my team around the fence.

Apart from the homestead team, I had two snipers positioned in the bushes near the homestead?s wall, covering the open yard and the shed on the opposite side of the street. I also deployed two additional operators across the road, one armed with a GPMG.

The Rangers focused on securing the crate-filled yard and committed a smaller force to approach the homestead. My operator inside barricaded himself with a table, preparing for any potential breach, while the rest of my team in the courtyard watched the fence in case of an enemy push. However, the Rangers avoided vaulting over the fence into my operators' line of fire and instead attempted a flanking maneuver to engage my snipers.

Seeing this, I repositioned my courtyard team to fire upon the yard. A prolonged exchange of gunfire erupted, with little effect at first. My GPMG operator attempted to neutralize a Ranger covering the flank of the crate yard, but despite his efforts, he failed miserably - rolling four ones on the hit check. However, my operators eventually managed to hit the Rangers stationed in the yard. The Rangers responded by sending reinforcements to assist their wounded, but they too were taken down in the firefight. With no active shooters left in the yard, my two operators across the road advanced and secured the wounded Rangers.

At the homestead, the Rangers managed to take out one of my snipers but lost two of their own in the process. Given the mounting casualties, we decided that continuing the fight was no longer viable, and the Rangers surrendered.

Very nice but the L86 is more commonly used as a marksmans gun (longer barrel and bipod, generally fitted with a suitable scope), not as a SAW, which role it wasn't really good at. You'll probably need something else as a SAW for your squad - was there also an RPK on that sprue?
But apart from that tiny quibble, these are very nice figures you've got, most impressive.

Yeah, I know that this isn't really a GMPG but there was nothing on the sprue that I could use. Only this, AK with drum mag and Chinese QBZ-95 lmg.

Alas the Rubicon boxes are a bust for this sort of thing. The NVA box gives you a single RPD and the US Army box contains no M60s. Not sure what the USMC box provides but I think the weirdly designed Australians may have an M60 or two.

TAG produce GPMGs, RPKs, PKs and M60s if you are after machineguns.

It was the Rubicon USMC I was thinking of - I think they have M60's. As to TAG, I like them a lot but, having had some of their individual weapons in the past, they can be quite oversized for most 28mm figures. I was very surprised that the Warlord sprue didn't have a Minimi which is surely the most common SAW out there? Any more ideas how to get single weapons like SAW's? Reaper do modern weapon sets but nothing heavier than an assault rifle I think.

Yep - the Rubicon USMC box has a couple M60s.  As carlos mentioned, the PAVN box has one lonely RPD.  The ANZAC box, though, is loaded with M60s, for some reason...

As I recall reading somewhere the Aussies were remarkably adept at 'borrowing' or 'trading' for US kit from rear supply areas. If I remember correctly, they started using the M16/M203 gl long before it found it's way into US Army hands! It would not surprise me if they had borrowed a whole load of M60's as well!

I'm back with more modern minis from spectre miniatures

These figures are deliberately unmarked, so they can represent any elite special forces unit: DEVGRU, Polish GROM, British SAS, or others. All are equipped with lightweight tactical gear, advanced NVGs (quad-tube
“four-eyes”), and a serious arsenal:

1 with MP7A1

2 with FN Minimi LMGs

1 with HK416 and Saab NLAW

2 with HK416s (one in heavier armor)

1 with HK416 and XM25 CDTE

1 with Origin-12 shotgun

Just finished painting this crew of 8 modern bank robbers in 28mm scale from Spectre Miniatures . All dressed in red boiler suits with creepy clown masks… well, except two guys who clearly didn’t get the memo and showed up in plain balaclavas instead. 😆
They're armed to the teeth with a mix of weapons — mostly SMGs, a few AR-15s, plus one pump-action shotgun and a grenade launcher.
