Title: Dien Bien Phu - the fight at Edgehill.
Post by: Pictors Studio on August 21, 2022, 01:39:13 PM
The French column had been ambushed by the Viet Minh and had to retreat to a nearby hill.

The Viet Minh followed up on them and after engaging in desultory fighting the French were running out of time.  They had to break through the enemy lines and get their column back on the road.

The French pushed forward on both flanks with a heavy assault on the right managing to break up the Viet Minh on that side.  They were not out of danger there though as more enemy forces were drawn over from the other side.

The Viet Minh fell back to draw the French further in.  They then launched an attack on the two French fireteams that were probing forward coming after them.  A heated exchange of fire left both French teams dead and the French reeling from the loss of command.

The Viet Minh took advantage of the temporary confusion in the French lines and pushed forward again against the French right.  But the tenacious paras were able to hold them off and inflict heavy casualties, opening up the way to their objective.

The paras made a break for it and the few remaining Viet Minh forces were not able to stop them and fell back, knowing that they had given better than they had gotten.

The players all seemed to enjoy themselves.  There were some really tense moments on both sides.  When the French lost their command team in turn 4 and had to forgo all of turn 5 to reorganize themselves it looked like it was over, but they managed to rally and through some good attacks pushed their way through.

It really see-sawed back and forth though.

We used Infinity.

Infinity rules?  The sci-fi set from Corvus Belli?

"Infinity rules?  The sci-fi set from Corvus Belli?"

The very same, probably the best modern or sci-fi skirmish game I've ever played.  The players really enjoyed the experience.  They said it seemed "right."  They thought it really captured how they imagined the combat could have been.

Edgehill - this was because the battle used the Battle of Bushy Run as the scenario, specifically the fighting on the second day.  Edgehill is the name of the rise in ground where the British regrouped and launched their sweeping flanking move that drove the Natives from the battlefield.

I like how you Indochina'ed Bushy Run.  I've done stuff like that too.

Great report, and lovely terrain and figures. Well done!
