Title: [COMMERCIAL] Faceless Publishing Resurrects Trinity: Battleground
Post by: Faceless Publishing on October 18, 2022, 12:41:27 AM
Hello everyone. We are Faceless Publishing, a small Canadian tabletop game and fiction publisher. Today is a very exciting day for us, as we announce the first project under our Wargames Resurrectionist label. The goal of Wargames Resurrectionist is to preserve out-of-print tabletop wargames and miniature lines, and make them available once again. After purchasing or licensing the rights to a game, 3d and conventional scanning are used to create a digital archive from the existing material. The digital copies of these games and miniatures will then be made available for purchase through online distribution. Rules and supporting materials will be sold as PDF documents, and miniatures will be available as STLs. 3d printed miniatures will also be available, for those without access to a 3d printer. In addition to game components, we also aim to speak with the sculptors, writers, and creators involved with each game wherever possible, in order to preserve as much of the background behind them as we can.

We are very excited to announce we have signed a license with Onyx Path Publishing to resurrect Trinity: Battleground!

For those unfamiliar with it, Trinity: Battleground was released in 1998 by White Wolf Publishing. It was the only wargame ever based on the Storytelling RPG rules system. The game is set in the Trinity universe (created by White Wolf and now owned by Onyx Path Publishing), and features psionically empowered heroes known as Psions battling twisted, superhuman mutants called Aberrants.

A skirmish level game, Trinity: Battleground contained rules for players to create their own customized Psions and Aberrants, choosing from a variety of psionic powers, mutations, and equipment. Players of the Trinity RPG would even be able to convert their characters into the game, allowing them to participate in larger-scale battles.

Sadly, even with such interesting and flexible rules, and miniatures sculpted by the legendary Bob Naismith (https://www.bobnaismith.com/), the game was not the success its creators hoped. It only lasted a year, and plans for future releases never materialized.

As a kind gesture, White Wolf released a free PDF containing the material that was currently being worked on for the game, which is still freely available from Onyx Path (https://www.wargamevault.com/product/122127/Trinity-Battleground-Players-Guide). Since then, Trinity: Battleground has stayed relatively unknown except to dedicated fans for nearly 25 years.

This will not be a Kickstarter. We are currently in the process of scanning the miniatures and creating print-ready .STL files. The game will be released once those are ready. We are excited to make this lost game available again after so long, and we are very thankful to Onyx Path for the opportunity. Keep an eye on this space and our website (http://www.facelesspublishing.com) for more news as we get closer to bringing this game back to life!

Good luck with the release, it is great to see these old games back in circulation. I hope you manage to get some pictures of sample games and scenarios up.

I bought Trinity back in...1999 I believe for about $25 and shipping from the USA, sending the <cash> in an envelope to the US, hoping the game would arrive one day. Me and a friend from back then tried the game and we quite liked it. And I used the cardboard scenery for quite some games, the hills too. Really top notch stuff for the day. Unfortunately I only ever painted one miniature from the set and don't own anything else anymore, but it always has a warm place in my heart!

We're happy to see there are other Trinity: Battlegrounds fans around. We should be able to put together some battle reports eventually, but right now our focus is on getting the miniatures and assorted cards and rulebooks ready for re-release.

How interesting!
Great to see old games back in production and IIRC, there were some pretty cool figs in Trinity.
Best of luck to you all in this project.

Thank you. Trinity certainly has a lot of cool miniatures, and some were very hard to find even when the game was in production. We look forward to making them available to modern gamers and collectors again.

Great to hear that the metal miniatures range will be available.

Will have to get my starter set-out and paint the miniatures.

I do agree that the terrain in the starter set was and still is very good quality.

The miniatures will be available in .STL and 3d printed resin. Unfortunately the rising cost of metal makes metal miniatures cost prohibitive for a venture such as ours. The rulebook and other materials will be available in .PDF format, and will include scanned copies of the cardboard terrain, so you can populate your table with as much of it as you like.

Will those be resculpts of the originals, new sculpts, or are you planning on somehow converting the existing figures into STLs?

I could be wrong, but it sounds like they're going to be STL's made from 3d scans of the original figures.

Really tickles the mind as to what other kind of long-gone figure lines could be resurrected if even one good example of a figure can be found.

Good to know the miniatures will be in resin then ;).

Also being printed is another bonus as i dont own a 3D printer.

As to other lost games how about the Cell Entertainment 1999 range.

Eilif is right, we are scanning existing miniatures in order to create digital models of each figure. After a little bit of cleanup, these will then be supported as printable .STLs and also be made available in printed resin through our webstore.

It's funny you should mention Cell Entertainment, as it is actually a company we have been considering for our next project. However, we are currently focusing our energy on Trinity. Information on Cell Entertainment is also hard to find, and it will take some time to find the line's owners and see if an arrangement can be made.

Alas its not that easy - even a high end scanner struggles below 50mm or so. Perhaps an industrial dental scanner might do it but the resulting scan will still be more of a mini shaped blob than a finished stl, and will need cleaning up.

Of course you'd mention 1999! You beat me to the punch though; it was the first thing on my mind when I saw how these guys operate.

@ Faceless Publishing: I've collected everything there is to be found on Cell and 1999 and run a (very old fashioned) fan-site for the game, but not everything is posted on the site. If you're in need of more info, please let me know; I'd love to see the game resurrected...

Trinity: Battleground is one of the few games I have kept from decades ago. Great game. Lots of fun.

Hmm, I don't think you can "scan and forget", but I also don't think the initial results are all that bad either. Sure, they benefit enormously from clean-up by hand in a 3D software package afterwards, but with older chunkier models the results are better than you might expect. I've seen a few examples of this here (http://nico-realmsofchaos.blogspot.com/2022/02/world-eaters-lord-of-battle.html) by Nico from Realms Of Chaos (noting it's a 28mm version of a 6mm model!), and here by Scruffy Crow: here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWISP39e1a8)

As with everything, the accuracy of scanners and the quality of their output will only increase with time.

You both have good points. Unfortunately, most 3d scanners are made for larger objects and struggle with small objects with a lot of fine details, like miniatures. However, the system we are using shows promising results so far. Some cleanup of the scans are necessary, but the detail of the scans we've run to this point are so fine that mold lines that are nearly invisible to the naked eye are clear on the scanned figure.

I can see that you are a huge fan of Cell Entertainment and 1999, and appreciate your passion. We'll look over your site and will likely contact you in the future.

To everyone else, we're happy to see so many Trinity fans, and we look forward to being able to return the game you love to production.

Cell Entertainment had other miniatures ranges too.

Krash was a car battle game.
Lab was Mad Scientists creating monsters that fought each other.
Ronin is a kind of spin on 40K Epic that had large walkers with supporting tanks and aircraft.
Nerve which was a card game.
Hybrid was a larger scale miniatures Gladiator type game.
 They also did RPG stuff.

Cell Entertainment had other miniatures ranges too.

That was their main problem right there, too much diversity so not enough support to any individual system in the range. Everything got started but nothing got completed, most never fulfilled the second batch of follow up releases. Picking which of the various ranges to concentrate on would be key to picking up a range from Cell. Sadly, given the current range of games and systems on the market I do not think 1999 would be the best choice. Even though I personally love it.

Trinity: Battleground is a self contained, scope limited system so there is a realistic chance of getting all the core and supplementary releases done as White Wolf Intended.

My old RPG group played a couple of Aberrant campaigns as one of the GMs was really keen on Superhero gaming and Aberrant seemed a good compromise between sci-fi and full on Spandex to those of us who weren't.
We never tried the Trinity RPG so I don't know the more sci-fi iteration of the background, but Aeon was a good setting as far as Aberrant went. I may have to hunt out a cheap copy of the 1st edition (pre storyteller system) Aberrant to mine ideas for Weird War games.

We were aware of Lab, Krash, Ronin, and 1999, but not the others. It's certainly a wide range, but one worth looking into.

To make sure there's no confusion, the Wargames Resurrectionist project is aimed at bringing back existing material, not creating new supplemental models or rules. This is especially the case with Trinity: Battlegrounds, which is being produced under license from Onyx Path. The Trinity RPG (including the old d20 version) is still available from Onyx Path on DriveThruRPG, so it's easy to get a copy.

Excellent. Yesterday I was shown a reprint of a scanned old necromunda fig at my FLGS.
The quality was much better than I would have expected.

I really like Bob Naismith's stuff. I made a list of all his SF miniatures over the years.

The Trinity figs are great but I only own two abberants.

Bob Naismith is a legend in the field, and he was very happy to answer some questions about his work on Trinity. He's a very pleasant chap. Didn't realize he sculpted the old Iron Crown space rangers.

Hello everyone,

We apologize for the long wait, but we are happy to announce that we have completed moving our scanning process in-house and are getting good results. We have shared a preview of our first scanned figure on our website as part of our new Miniature Monday blog series. Please stop by and learn more about the spine-covered monstrosity known as Caul Fein (https://facelesspublishing.com/blogs/news/miniature-monday-the-first-aberrant-is-revealed)!

That scan looks pretty good already, good to see you got past the early problems. What happens to the render now, are you refining it or trying for a test print?

Good questions! The image we shared is the result of the scan being refined and prepared for printing. We are looking into having the files professionally supported, or doing it ourselves. Once they are supported, we will produce more test prints. Unfortunately, we are experiencing problems with our own 3d printer.

Hello Chief Lackey Rich! We are familiar with your blog post, as we came across it during our research into Trinity: Battleground. It was actually your photos that alerted us that the Aberrants Keeper, Sanguine, and Luka were produced, as they were listed as only planned on the Unofficial White Wolf Wiki and no images were available on the Lost Minis Wiki. After a lot of hunting, we have managed to acquire these three rare models, and will be bringing them back into production with the rest of the line. Thank you for your unwitting assistance.

Fantastic news. I also bought a copy quite a while ago but some of the figures got lost or broken over the years so I'm looking forward eagerly to replacing them and buying new ones.

Obviously it'll take you a while to get the figures scanned, the files cleaned up and ready to put up for sale so could I be really cheeky and enquire what sort of timescale you're working to, or is it more of a 'they'll be ready when they're ready' sort of thing?

Also, once all the stl files are released, you won't be working on new figures but what if other designers want to produce new figures - Chromatics, other Legionaires, Aberrants or others? Would you have a sort of 'open licence' for derivative Trinity figures?

Sorry if there's a lot there, I am quite looking forward to this!

Hello Rick. Those are all good questions, and we are happy to see more people who are familiar with Trinity: Battleground joining us in our excitement. We are planning to release the game later this year, but do not have a specific timeframe, as there are still a lot of moving parts and we will need to receive approval from Onyx Path Publishing before we launch. To answer your second question, we are resurrecting the game under license and so we are limited to reproducing miniatures and source materials that were already produced. New figures would have to be produced by Onyx Path, or through a separate license. However, if you are interested in seeing more of the Trinity: Battleground universe, make sure to let Onyx Path know!

Okay that does clear a lot of things up for me - wasn't quite sure what sort of licence or ownership deal you were operating under. It'll be interesting to see if Onyx would go for the 'planned but never released' figures as well but we'll just have to see.
I'll be following your progress with a lot of interest while I keep working on the conversions I began before I heard about this!

You would have to ask Onyx Path about that, but unfortunately to our knowledge the planned but never released miniatures were never sculpted. If they were, the originals were lost with the rest of the masters. If new models were to be made, it would have to be from scratch. However, you never know. If the resurrection of Trinity: Battleground goes well enough, maybe Onyx Path will announce some new releases in the future.

I don't recall the Gomorrah, though hardly surprising as I didn't get much into different parts.

I do think I would have remembered how much I am reminded of drawings on Larry Niven's Thrintun.

Kewl!

I for one wish to welcome our new telepathic overlords!

Gomorrah was one of the two resin big guys in the starter set along with Nazul, the four-armed Abby with the exoskeletal carapace.  Both were also sold in solo blisters in metal, where Gomorroah was a bit heavier than Nazul - he's really chunky, way more so than some weedy Thrint.  Who needs muscle when you're a telepathic Slaver, right?

As a Bob Naismith fanboy I really approve of this project. I only have two original abberants.
Nice idea to release them as STL's.

Bob Naismith is a legend in the hobby, and we are happy to be able to bring more attention to some of his lesser known sculpts. He reach out to him to ask him some questions as part of the project, and he was a very pleasant chap.

We fully agree Agis! It's always a treat to see your phenomenally painted Trinity figures. They showed up many times on our searches as we worked on the project.

It's time again for Miniature Monday! I haven't got an image to prove it, but that ice shield also paints up really nicely as a "glowing energy barrier" thing.  Fairly easy to make separate pieces in a similar style using chopped up sprue stuck together in various shapes if you want a superhero fig that makes force wall constructs.  Had fun doing that in Supersystem back in the day.

We're happy to share another reveal with everyone. It's less formal, but we're so excited we couldn't wait! We've completed our first test print of a Trinity: Battleground miniature using a filament printer. There are some support issues and some loss of detail, but overall a very impressive first attempt! We had plans to print our miniatures in resin, but were pleasantly surprised by the detail modern FDM printers are capable of. This miniature was printed on a Bambu A1 with a 0.2mm nozzle.

Agreed! We've been very impressed with the quality that it's capable of. It doesn't change our plans to eventually offer the miniatures in resin, but it does give us more options.

We were hoping to share more test prints this week, but our printer has been suffering some technical issues. Instead, this week we're revealing Slint (https://facelesspublishing.com/blogs/news/miniature-monday-slint-slips-into-the-fray), another serpentine Aberrant.

You're confusing Slint with the similarly serpentine Luka, who we posted about earlier in the thread. Since both have multiple limbs and a snake-like tail, they're fairly easy to mix-up.

Great looking models!
Thank you! We are very happy with the results of our first test print.

Hello Schogun! The new figures will be reprints of the original figures and will be in the same size, or as close as possible to it. Since they will be available as STLs for 3d printing, players will also be able to scale them up or down as they like.

Are you planning a full release for the shocking secret project as for Trinity?
All the figures (including the Hillbillies?) and an updated version of the rules?

Lots of wonderful stuff there.

Lots of wonderful stuff there.

This is the week we spill the beans! In this week's Miniature Monday (https://facelesspublishing.com/blogs/news/miniature-monday-updates-news-and-a-furrious-announcement), we share a status update on our resurrection of Trinity: Battleground, and announce our next miniature project, the 1998 Goth Rats from Demon Blade Miniatures!

To answer your question, we unfortunately do not own the rights to anything other than the Goth Rats, at least not for the forseeable future, but owning them outright does mean there is potential for future projects. As we mention in our blog post, the Shock Force rules are still available on Wargame Vault, for people interested in trying them out. As for other games to play with the rats, we might have a little something up our sleeve...

...... we unfortunately do not own the rights to anything other than the Goth Rats, at least not for the forseeable future...

It is a shame the Demonblade range has been scattered and largely forgotten. I have been after the Moonshiners and 'Good ol' Boys'  from the Scarlet Brethren force for a long while. The Goth Rats are a great set of figures with plenty of uses, it will be good to see the 3 Rat Ogre sized ones available again.
