Title: Cthulhu project in 1/35
Post by: Freddy on October 22, 2022, 12:58:58 PM
As a spinoff of my 1/35 ww2 project
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138659.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138659.0)
I also have a Cthulhu one. Far less ambitious, but maybe worth a forum thread.

First of all, the herd of innocent civilians. Various manufacturers, most of them also fit post-ww2 and pre-ww1 eras. Most of them are factory models, the doctor in the foreground (dr Ben Dover) and his assistant (two left) are my conversions.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-ABNdooodi0SjuyGd7WlNID23DKLoCiNcns2YY6KyWvt3x3aAoyrnfRmHdDll4MhNgECGvlpZYmPIxsKxxKzw7l40Kwf9Up8gm-Ww8jz2Kw6ZoFA8-zBWTx7K1OCeDqzwlnchao_Oe74OLIx602OLABjKIaXVchHKgeAE0J_5qDh7hFr0zhVk10lE/s958/Civilek_%C3%B6sszes.jpg)

Armed civilians. The gangster guy and the fat one with the cigar are my sculpts, the others are simply heavily converted.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXWpAeX3_VoLJlmbJwTdthX2izzR99iJaF2dS769Upy9Nti_kBajFencmfKxHs7Z0Q9j2RXR0FWKzQ2D00sekPPps7PtZFb41VVdC6L6nUv2df_3TDTxhgQRi-soUcTX1Bx0Lh6vBVQIKiNf9P-M9WSrhUZNBSeKAljXKLDZEy8R_x4YqKhaqGsAiw/w633-h273/Fegyveres_civilek.JPG)

Law enforcement. A German cop (they had this uniform till the 70s, without the swastikas ofc), a French one (I think it is also a good generic European policeman) and a Hungarian.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_zPxY3v6b7bOLFzkrT263nHH0FLWsixE6AkugOBC8DxA0lJ0q-Lpz46rRqT9Xb-BIWFgu5J5_s9Ch0S-mW2ESgodph5F76j1C8m13WBru9vLbXmzjply-Iymsr7fQU85HEkrs1YxBwDRoxAwxRdBSztOCVNH2ekQFvYTeN4tndwHy9ZjeuuaeyYT4/w510-h309/Rend%C5%91r%C3%B6k.jpg)

Hungarian gendarmes (in Hungary, police was responsible for the cities, gendarmes for the countryside)

Hunters. my other hobby is hunting, so I made some of them. Most are for the modern era, but Central European hunting gear is quite conservative, these two fit any era from pre-ww1 to modern. The left one is a factory set, the right one my sculpt, the head is from an accessory set.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3UTeeWycwOZXg8KsjP6LmymZn1PUF82zkgixN82Mov1VRA_4lHgk0gHBeuOWgE-vxCT_GlQ4aLx6XcZkDYNKltB58vMcqdxofs63xG7STbC20qtf0poZxxzVkZWKDNAFxCqbujxBoqt5rsXJsV9LCXfrVRirvlGTeRLvv62BcYxJGvHgahZPJGMm0/w508-h408/Vad%C3%A1szok.jpg)

A fancy car (1932 Cadillac Fleetwood). A diecast piece, I only added some weathering and sculpted a driver.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyT7YYe0xQdpZitu0bvdaNAMKPqPsoBv2UYitorbc0Ofyi80XL4ObJ8rBrGi5r8-wWlY-xEcLy4SeybR-x5MBcaiq5nk7gANPg-P_IItrNoxdqVsMqus02mIMYapzxeX_tSuFI0BKPh3hOTHlF1emdjKOxVG513vI4DeIyaXR8jKin85oc-Gun-Nlj/w528-h335/CadillacFleetwood1933_2.JPG)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwFDnECRGBqhMVLOI--6acb9RGoSoKSiutRTKb1xzfmWEUrMXI_wA0Xt6vzLzlFSbgO8Gc61jPFnHv7gz9XrjjzWbptxLPAVYVOV_g3hm8ghGKumStMyigBaiYuuk-EfiBkDN2WNjVpUfaRbml8QCN5_xdLgWBlpNQ1moSIWsutcBPBwE_4TRiIaPK/w473-h281/CadillacFleetwood1933_4.JPG)

And now the baddies. The biggest drive in this project for me is to sculpt and paint new monsters, free of any converntion. The worst thing the world could do with the legacy of Lovecraft was that they canonized it. Lovecraft is about the fear of the unknown, not the neat AD&D bestiary entries detailing the weak ponts of the shoggoth and the exact litter size of the Black Goat in the Woods. So rather than aiming for the etablished monsters, I try to approach the topic with the ,,anything goes" mindset, as long as that anything is creepy enough.

This guy came from a boardgame called Cultistorm.

This one also.

This is from a company called Printminis. I painted him Greek theme, to remember my recent vacation in Greece :)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj5ZbysLosN3j_6y0yR8b8Gijcn7-iXNCnuSn5iwFGx9TAVNbjN1Wqbd5KW7pbvEw9L9Fg_x3brrFzb8UnKp19NHcX_4AhV_hBtojtDINUXH4igceM77p_0ccB4mjGGZGyr0L4nrqCs8fHpHtLXNeKNp_AWt8mw7Ord719zaGixm-o9X0uLTGRBDYnM=w430-h430)

This one is my sculpt.

Also this tentacle. Hide your anime girls, I made some resin copies of this one.

Mr Freikörperkultur is a generic monster (cast in resin now), I will use for postapo too, but he makes a great ghoul in the Cthulhu universe.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9D5vEWKKyDv3qvAZJ5MlHTPX85iAAsDJeCLSA2Q91NFndspCePB_15C0VZwx_P-osQs-WKHjYdQtazxFhBWHQT5LfWo-wOdMPpxm2PB2-j9jlHhNqYmZQOYiGi68To0vttHhpP9eFZnWnB5mbtbo5BKNlHp5CkW9nRqrDc8yrIWx8mZIPGm13GL4Q/w335-h476/Shadow_2.JPG)

Mr Tentacleface is just a generic cultist-mutant type.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCMe3Ed3Ogxjqbf637f0xOZkeS4QbEtyKj7F_czUv41H9xCMBGWidf1usO0s8QMvnOTJeW7S3hM0IpQwciqgaTSW17mvPzrHuFcopiDIVLaahp21grwRgy3p4cYX4GUu77VUY70bIUc0hHV8LjlesHw4DvrJXXR7HgRpJDmRozz9rLGBP64Efi_opo/w502-h504/Kultista2_1.JPG)

That is mostly it for now, new things will come soon. I usually play small skirmishes with these models, like in the game Perilous Tales-a great solo horror skirmish system, but I think it was not even released officially. I am now also ramping up in Fear of the Dark. And ofc, I use the figures in Lovecraft-themed board games instead of the meeples.

Lovely work on all of them, I particularly like your conversions and sculpts.
The beasties you have created are great too.

Nice.   I'd love to see the 1/35 terrain you'll be using.

Nice.   I'd love to see the 1/35 terrain you'll be using.
Thanks!
Nothing really fancy here, my terrain is on the simple side, and I also make it fit the most periods and both 28mm and 1/35. Most 28mm terrain also fits 1/35, with the exception of maybe some buildings. For these cottages, I made interchangeable door sections, on the pic the 1/35 one:

Some swamps:

Here a ww2 battle with some premade ruins, MDF fences, aquarium foliage and model railroad trees:

I also have a Garden of Morr from GW, fits the creepy theme.

1/35 isn’t a scale I have considered for gaming, but your project certainly looks great! I like how you have modified or sculpted from scratch many of the elements you need for gaming, and your painting is excellent. I will be following this.!

Thank you, guys!

Mr Tentacleface just had his debut in a recent game of Perilous Tales. Eldritch powers do not make you bulletproof, he learned that the hard way. (The Iron Maiden beer bottle caps are used for suspicious activity markers here).

...like for example this cultist. Pawn of every Elder God ever, easiest kill of every investigator ever, what is a Cthulhu game without the ubiquitous Cultist? I sculpted two heads for casting, one with a simple hood, the other with more of the Innsmouth taint, but with a head swap and maybe some little extra green stuff he also can be a Catholic priest or even a KKK member. The weapon is also easy to swap.

This dude overdid the Cthulhu worship, so his head turned into a bag of worms. This is why you shall never overdo the Cthulhu worship.
3d printed model from Flesh of Gods Miniatures, btw.

Maffia thug. That baseball bat might be enough against the cultists, against the monsters he might need some more serious weapon. Good thing the hand is easy to swap.

I can just repeat myself:

I also got a new car, a  Corgi diecast 1/36 Rolls Royce 1937 Phantom III, to me it is just the "You rang, Mlord?"-car. I might make a scenario with no Cthulhu stuff, you just have to stop Sir Ralph graffitiing FORNICATOR onto is.
It got some paint update, I sculpted a driver and got a new number plate too.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for mentioning the Cthulhu solo miniatures skirmish games. Been looking for more solo miniature gaming, and have only been doing fantasy. I have the Grenadier 1980's Cthulhu mini's and RAFM Whateley Farm set!

No terrain, though. ): I don't think my wallet is ready for another genre :P but I have the 2D Loke Battlemats "The Big Book of Battle Mats - Rooms, Vaults & Chambers". Seems like I can use the rooms from this map book for pulp and Victorian gaming, despite the cover's fantasy artwork. Plonk it on a 2x2 gaming area and ready to go. Wish it was foldout maps rather than a spiral bound book, so I could plop several different buildings on the board, though.

Thank you for the kind words, guys, and yes, I am a great fan of 2d dungeons. The ones designed for 28mm usually work well with 1/35 too.

Also I painted two of the cultists from above.

The King in Yellow- a well known tabletop game sculpt, I did not alter it as the robed figure part is 1/35 size, it will fit into my collection as it is. I just painted it (with oils). Those cultists have to serve someone...

Two more of the cultists, this time a bit more... fishy:

Now I have 6 of them, enough for most Fear of the Dark scenes, also they would make two bases worth of cultists if I decide to bring my ww1/ww2 games into a weird war direction.

Thank you, but I also have a handful of those. I do not use them on figures though as they usually come together with their setting bitz and removing those is more work than scratching a new one. I simply made the weapons from green stuff and plasticard and made some resin casts, this way I always have enough.

Are the green and yellow pieces beads?
Where did the Cthulhu statue come from?
I like the multipurpose of the piece. I would have to protect it though. My kids all play 40K. It would be "borrowed" and never returned.

The Cthulhu statue (and the altar piece) is my sculpt from FIMO. Old, dry FIMO unusable for figures is still good for statues.
Yes, the urns/jugs are from wooden beads, a great idea I stole from Ana Polanscaks blog.

I may have to raid my wife's craft stocks. She makes a lot of rosaries and has a bin of oddball beads I can go through. Surely she won't miss a few...

FIMO? I may have to try my hand at making a statue now.

Thanks for the new ideas to play with!

Excellent work on cthulhu.

Did you use anything to mig the oils to make drying time faster? I have a paint drying accelarator liquid but have not tried it out yet. I mainly stick to oil washes thinned down with mineral spirits as they have a very fast drying time. I am too impatient to wait weeks for a proper oil coat to dry  lol

Thank you!

I use artist tupertine to thin the artist oil, this supposed to be pure real tupertine. White spirit most modellers use migh result in a faster drying, but I am afraid of these thinners as they often change their ingredients, even the same product could be different based on the country or production time. With tupertine the drying time is between 2-3 days to several weeks, usually closer to the former one unless you use thick layers without thinning*. It is OK to me, it is really comfortable that you do not have to finish the painting in one instance, you can continue next day. The downside is that tupertine is pretty agressive, if it collects into drops it ruins the below acrylic layer.

*Artist oil on itself is thinned with lanoline, now with this drying time is really slow. If you use lanoline itself as a thinner too, drying might take into the several months range- a bug or a feature, you decide :P

There are several oil techniques, the ,,working into thick base layer" technique is a bit harder, but I used the "thin base layer+wait a few minutes+drybrush the rest onto it" technique which should not be hard for those familiar with other paint types. Be careful about the base colour though as oils are usually more transparent then acrylics but this always depends on the paint, manufacturers usually give information about the opaqueness, choose the one that suits your project.

A broken 28mm Lady Dimitrescu (the giant vampire woman from Resident Evil [Resident Evil now has vampires? wtf]) from Brother Vinni, with some green stuff and an M1911 she made a nice 1/35 woman. Some of her bodyparts are still giant though ;)

I love the Innsmouth fish folk. We need the Miskatonic University, the spooky trees and well from The Colour Out of Space or even the run down buildings of Innsmouth itself. I'm watching

A quick search on ebay showed some really nice cars and trucks from WW II time period. Are those kinda what you had in mind?

What scale is 1/35 in mm? Is it 54mm?

Yes, there are loads of them, the plastic model makers also discovered these possibilities after the diecast ones.

54mm is 1/32. For wargaming, especially for civilian vehicles, the difference is negligible between the two.
1/35 is rarely translated into millimeters, but I saw it as 52mm and 50mm too.

Hmmm? I don't recall ever seeing anything in 50 or 52mm. I have seen loads of stuff in many time periods in 54mm. Good thing those will work as 54mm does give you a lot to choose from.

A female gangster. Looks a bit like a cosplaying stripper, but the Chicago Typewriter always means business. Model from Armor35.

That is outstanding work! Wish I could do people nearly so well.

I agree her get up seems way more modern. While I like the tommy gun I think a Berretta would be more appropriate.

Thank you! Her clothing mimics 1920s mens fashion, but the fedora is what makes her really ,,gangster era", that is why I choose to paint her into this direction.
